Madhopur is a town, located, near city of Pathankot in Pathankot district, Punjab, India, at its border with the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also the location of the Madhopur headworks on the Ravi River, which feeds the Upper Bari Doab Canal irrigating 335,000 hectares of land in Punjab.

Madhopur lies on the Pathankot-Jammu national highway (NH 44, formerly NH-1A), a key road link between Jammu and Kashmir has with the rest of India. It is also on the Jalandhar–Jammu railway line.

Madhopur was part of the Nurpur Princely state ruled by the Pathania Rajputs prior to 1849 A.D. Now it is known as the "Gateway of Punjab", a meeting point of the three northern states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Due to its location, Madhopur serves as a travel hub for those three, and is a hub for the Indian Army. Madhopur is a small Punjab town in terms of population. It is the last point in Punjab on the national highway that connects Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. The Upper Bari Doab Canal starts from here, which is best known for its Hydraulic Research Station at the Upper Bari Doab Canal in Malikpur Sujanpur. Madhopur is situated in the foothills of Kangra and Dalhousie, with the Ravi River flowing close by. The city is sometimes used as a rest-stop before heading into the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, Dalhousie, Chamba, and Kangra, into the Himalayas.[ citation needed ].

Head works of Upper Bari Doab, Osho's Ashram and Shahpur Kandi are the attractions of this area. Madhopur is also used as a gateway to the Jammu and Kashmir hill stations of Kathua, Patni Top, Gulmarg. Madhopur is known for its natural environment.[ citation needed ] A garden made by the British Raj known as 'Pari Garden' was there which was recently destroyed because of new hydro project, as are several buildings from the Raj era.

The Ranjit Sagar Dam, also known as the Thein Dam, is part of a hydroelectric project constructed by the Punjab Irrigation Department on the Ravi River on the border of Union Territory, Jammu and Kashmir and state Punjab. It is located upstream of the Madhopur Barrage at Madhopur. A large portion, up to 60%, of the reservoir falls within Jammu and Kashmir. The dam is around and equidistant 30 km from both Pathankot in the state of Punjab and Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. The project is used for both irrigation and power generation. The project is the largest hydroelectric dam in Punjab with a capacity of 600 megawatts. Also, the dam is amongst the highest earth-fill dams in India and has the largest diameter penstock pipes in the country. The township where the site is located is called Shah pur Kandi Township. Feasibility studies for the project began in 1953 and geotechnical studies continued until 1980. Construction began in 1981, the generators were commissioned in 2000 and the project complete in March 2001.

The Jalandhar–Jammu line is a railway line connecting Jalandhar Cantonment and Jalandhar City in the Indian state of Punjab with Jammu Tawi in Jammu and Kashmir. The line is under the administrative jurisdiction of Northern Railway. This line was made after Indian Independence in 1947. Normally before partition of India and creation of Pakistan, trains to Jammu Tawi from Delhi used to run via Panipat, Ambala Cantonment, Ludhiana, Jalandhar City, Amritsar, Lahore, Narowal and Sialkot. But after partition and creation of Pakistan in 1947, the Sialkot–Jammu Tawi line was dismantled and closed permanently. Jammu and Kashmir became cut off from rest of India. Hence in 1949, it was decided to extend the line from Jalandhar City to Mukerian till Pathankot and after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, this line was extended to Jammu Tawi. Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway is an approved 670 km (420 mi) long, 4-lane wide controlled-access expressway, which will connect Bahadurgarh border near Delhi with Katra in Jammu and Kashmir via Haryana and Punjab. It will have a spur section which will connect Nakodar with Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport located in Raja Sansi, Amritsar. The 397.7 km (247.1 mi) long Delhi–Nakodar–Katra section is National Expressway 5(NE-5) and 99 km (62 mi) long Amritsar–Nakodar section is National Expressway 5A(NE-5A). Once completed, it will reduce the current Delhi-Katra distance from 727 km (452 mi) to 588 km (365 mi) and the time travel will be reduced from 14 hours to 6 hours, and Delhi-Amritsar distance to 405 km (252 mi) and from the time travel will be reduced from 8 hours to only 4 hours.

Madhopur Headworks is a barrage on the Ravi River, just 14km from Pathankot city in Pathankot district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is located on the border with Jammu and Kashmir. The Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) off-taking from Madhopur irrigates agricultural lands in Punjab and provides water to the cities of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Batala and Amritsar.
