Perrottetia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Dipentodontaceae described as a family in 1824. [2] [1] [4] Species occur in China, Southeast Asia, Papuasia, Hawaii, Australia, and Latin America. [3] [5] [6] It is the largest genus of the recently described order Huerteales.

Taxonomy

This genus was previously placed in the staff vine family, Celastraceae., [2] but molecular evidence has shown that it not related and better placed with '' Dipentodon '' in a separate family Dipentodontaceae.

They are native to the Americas, ranging from southern Florida and Texas in the United States to Argentina. The highest diversity occurs in Mexico and the Andes. The generic name is derived from the Greek words κιθάρα (kithara), meaning "lyre", and ξύλον (xylon), meaning "wood," referring to the use of the wood in the sounding boards of string instruments. Several species, especially C. caudatum and C. spinosum, are cultivated as ornamentals.
