The Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference (PVIAC) is a high school athletic conference in District 1 of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). The conference was founded in 1980, and consists of schools in the Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties of Massachusetts. [1] The league is made up of a mix of public, charter, vocational/technical, and Christian high schools.
*Note: Pope Francis Prep was established under the name Cathedral High School in 1883; in 2015 it merged with Holyoke Catholic High School and became Pope Francis Prep

Prior to the 2013 MIAA football realignment, Western Mass teams played each other for State rights. After the 2013 alignment Western Mass teams faced Central Mass teams to determine State Champion.

Hampden County is a non-governmental county located in the Pioneer Valley of the U.S. state of Massachusetts, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, Hampden County's population was 465,825. Its traditional county seat is Springfield, the Connecticut River Valley's largest city, and economic and cultural capital; with an estimated population of 154,758, approximately one-third of Hampden County residents live in Springfield.

Chicopee is a city located on the Connecticut River in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 55,560, making it the second-largest city in western Massachusetts after Springfield. Chicopee is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The communities of Chicopee Center (Cabotville), Chicopee Falls, Willimansett, Fairview, Aldenville, Burnett Road, Smith Highlands and Westover are located within the city.

The MIAA is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), which writes the rules for most U.S. high school sports and activities. The MIAA was founded in 1978, and was preceded by both the Massachusetts Secondary School Principals Association (MSSPA) (1942–1978) and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Council (MIAC) (1950–1978).

Massachusetts also houses the Cape Cod Baseball League. It is also home to prestigious sports events such as the Boston Marathon and the Head of the Charles Regatta. The Falmouth Road Race in running and the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic in bicycle racing are also very popular events with long histories.

Rodney Stacey Smith is an American wrestler. He was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Smith attended Western New England University. Coached by head coach Robert Skelton and Assistant Coach Bryon Gross, Smith was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American. After Smith graduated in 1988, he enlisted in the United States Army. He participated in the World Class Athlete Program. He won the bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Smith is now working at HCSS in West Springfield.

Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School was a public charter high school in Chicopee and Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was originally located in Holyoke, Massachusetts, but relocated to its Chicopee 2019. It primarily served students in nearby towns such as; Holyoke, Chicopee, Springfield, West Springfield, Westfield, and South Hadley. It closed in the summer of 2023 after the Massachusetts Board of Education declined to renew its charter due to well-below average test scores and insufficient enrollment.
Athol-Royalston Regional High School is a public high school in Athol, Massachusetts, United States. The Bears are the school mascot and the school colors are red and white. The Old Athol High School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The current high school is at 2363 Main Street. It is part of the Athol-Royalston Regional School District.

Adam Gomez is an American politician, who represented Ward 1 on the Springfield City Council, first taking office in January 2016 and the Hampden District in the Massachusetts Senate. In January 2020, he was selected as vice president of the council.
