Poet's Word (foaled 5 April 2013) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and breeding stallion. He showed useful but unremarkable form in his first two seasons before developing into a high-class performer at the age of four when he won the Glorious Stakes as well as finishing second in both the Irish Champion Stakes and the Champion Stakes. He continued his progress as a five-year-old in 2018, winning the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, Prince of Wales's Stakes and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Background

Poet's Word is a bay horse standing 16.1 hands high (1.64 m) with no white markings bred in Ireland by the Woodcote Stud. [2] As a yearling he was offered for sale at Tattersalls in October 2014 and bought for 300,000 guineas by the bloodstock agent Charles Gordon-Watson. [3] He entered the ownership of Saeed Suhail and was sent into training with Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Suffolk.

He was from the first crop of foals sired by Poet's Voice, who won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2010. [4] Poet's Word's dam Whirly Bird won five minor races [5] and produced several other winners including the Prestige Stakes winner Malabar. She was a granddaughter of the Child Stakes winner Inchmurrin, making her a close relative of Balisada and Harbour Law. [6]

Racing career

2015: two-year-old season

Poet's Word made his only appearance as a juvenile on 21 October when he started a 16/1 outsider for a maiden race over seven furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse. Ridden by Andrea Atzeni he recovered from a poor start to finish fourth, more than five lengths behind the winner Mootaharer. [7]

2016: three-year-old season

Poet's Word began his second campaign by finishing third to Taqdeer in a one-mile maiden on the Polytrack surface at Chelmsford City Racecourse on 16 April. On 6 May, ridden by Ryan Moore he contested a ten furlong maiden at Nottingham Racecourse and recorded his first success as he won "comfortably" by two and a quarter lengths. [8] His three other appearances in 2016 were in handicap races. On 4 June at Epsom Racecourse he carried 124 pounds and finished fourth to Gawdawpalin (112), beaten five lengths. At Goodwood on 29 July he was ridden by Moore and started 7/4 favourite despite carrying 133 pounds over eleven furlongs. He struggled to obtain a clear run in the straight but "stayed on strongly" to win by just over a length from Sixties Groove. [9] On his final appearance of the season he was matched against older horses and beaten a length by the four-year-old Central Square at Doncaster Racecourse in September.

2017: four-year-old season

Poet's Word began his third campaign on the Polytrack at Chelmsford on 13 April when he started 8/11 favourite for a ten furlong handicap for which he was assigned 130 pounds. With Moore in the saddle he took the lead inside the final furlong and won "readily" by a length and a quarter from Intrude. [10] The colt was then moved up to Group 3 level for the first time to contest the Huxley Stakes at Chester Racecourse in May and finished second, beaten a neck by the Aidan O'Brien-trained Deauville.

After a break of almost three months, Poet's Word returned on 4 August for the Group 3 Glorious Stakes over one and a half miles and started the 7/4 favourite against five opponents. Moore settled him in fourth before taking the lead approaching the final furlong and winning by one and a half lengths and a neck from Second Step (Grosser Preis von Berlin) and Scarlet Dragon. [11] In September the colt was sent to Ireland and stepped up to Group 1 class for the Irish Champion Stakes over ten furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse in which he was partnered by James Doyle. Starting at odds of 10/1 he was beaten half a length by the outsider Decorated Knight with Cliffs of Moher, Churchill and The Grey Gatsby among the unplaced finishers. In the Champion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on 21 October, he proved no match for the winner Cracksman but took second place ahead of Highland Reel, Recoletos, Brametot, Cliffs of Moher and Barney Roy. For his final run of the year he was sent to Sha Tin Racecourse for the Hong Kong Cup on 10 December and finished sixth behind the locally trained Time Warp.

In the 2017 edition of the World's Best Racehorse Rankings Poet's Word was given a rating of 119, making him the 59th best racehorse in the world. [12]

2018: five-year-old season

Poet's Word began his fourth season with a trip to Dubai for the Sheema Classic at Meydan Racecourse in March. Ridden for the first time by Frankie Dettori he finished second of the ten runners, beaten three lengths by Hawkbill. On his return to Europe the horse started 4/6 favourite for the Brigadier Gerard Stakes over 10 furlongs at Sandown Park Racecourse on 24 May. He was positioned in second place by Moore before taking the lead entering the last quarter mile and "kept on well" to win by two and a quarter lengths from Laraaib. [13] At Royal Ascot on 20 June Poet's Word started 11/2 second favourite behind Cracksman in a seven-runner field for the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes which also included Hawkbill and Cliffs of Moher. After being restrained by James Doyle in fifth place he made a forward move approaching the straight, took the lead a furlong out and drew away from his rivals to win by two and a quarter lengths from Cracksman. [14] His victory gave Stoute his 76th victory at Royal Ascot, making him the most successful trainer in the meeting's history. [15] Stoute described the winner as "a very consistent, brave horse". [16]

On 28 July Poet's Word, with Doyle in the saddle, was one of seven horses to contest the 68th running of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over one and a half miles at Ascot. He started the 7/4 second favourite behind his stablemate Crystal Ocean with the other fancied runners being Coronet Stakes, Hydrangea, Rostropovich (Dee Stakes), Salouen (runner-up in the Coronation Cup) and Desert Encounter. After racing towards the rear of the field, Poet's Word produced a sustained run on the outside in the straight, overhauled Crystal Ocean inside the final furlong, and won by a neck. His win was a record sixth in the race for Stoute, after Shergar, Opera House, Golan, Conduit and Harbinger. [17] James Doyle commented "He's a true warrior. Everything he does, he's so professional and he responds really well. I just had to be patient... I had to be brave and attack late and he’s helped me out. He's the real star today". [18]

Poet's Word was dropped back in distance at York on 22 August and started 8/5 favourite for the International Stakes in which he faced the leading three-year-olds Roaring Lion and Saxon Warrior. After tracking the leaders Doyle found himself boxed in when the field tracked right to race up the stands-side in the straight. He quickly obtained a clear run but was unable to make any impression on the leader Roaring Lion and was beaten just over three lengths into second place.

In September it was announced that Poet's Word had sustained an injury and would miss the rest of the season. [19] He was officially retired from racing a month later. [20]

In the 2018 World's Best Racehorse Rankings, Poet's Word was given a rating of 126, making him the 7th best racehorse in the world. [21]

Stud record

Poet's Word began his career as a breeding stallion at the Nunnery Stud in Norfolk. [20]

Singspiel was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for a series of wins in major international races in 1996 and 1997. In a racing career which lasted from September 1994 until August 1997 he won nine of his twenty races and finished second on eight occasions. After showing good, but unexceptional form in his first two seasons he emerged as a world class performer in 1996 when he won the Canadian International Stakes and Japan Cup and was named U.S. Champion Male Turf Horse. In the following season he added victories in the Dubai World Cup, Coronation Cup and International Stakes before his career was ended by injury. He was initially trained in Britain and as a three-year-old in 2011 he won the Great Voltigeur Stakes, was runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Turf and finished third in the St Leger. In 2012 he won the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. In 2013 he was sold and sent to be trained in Australia where he won the Herbert Power Stakes. He returned to Europe for three races in 2015 before being retired to stud.

Al Kazeem British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Al Kazeem is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promise as a two-year-old in 2010 and became a consistently successful performer in the following year. In 2012 he won the Jockey Club Stakes on his seasonal debut but was then sidelined by injury for almost a year. In 2013 he won the Gordon Richards Stakes on his comeback and then took three consecutive Group One races: the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Prince of Wales's Stakes and Eclipse Stakes. After an unsuccessful spell at stud he returned to racing in 2014 to win the Winter Hill Stakes and finish a close second in the Champion Stakes. He began his 2015 season by winning the Prix d'Harcourt and went on to win a second Tattersalls Gold Cup before being retired for the second time in August.

Night of Thunder (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Night of Thunder is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In May 2014, he won the 2000 Guineas. He failed to win again as a three-year-old but finished second in both the St James's Palace Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and third in the Prix du Moulin. On his four-year-old debut, he won the Lockinge Stakes.

Ask is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Unraced as a two-year-old, he showed some promise as a three-year-old in 2006, winning one minor race and finishing fourth in the St Leger. He improved in the following year despite running only three races: he won the Ormonde Stakes and the Cumberland Lodge Stakes and was narrowly beaten in the Canadian International Stakes. He won the Gordon Richards Stakes in 2008 but reached his peak as a six-year-old in the following year, winning the Yorkshire Cup, Coronation Cup and Prix Royal Oak as well as finishing third in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. After a single, unsuccessful start in 2010 his racing career was ended by injury. He was then retired to become a National Hunt stallion in Ireland.

Proclamation was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning his only race as a juvenile in 2004 he emerged as a top-class miler in the following year, recording wins of progressively greater importance in the Heron Stakes, Jersey Stakes and Sussex Stakes. After being beaten in his three remaining races he was retired from racing at the end of 2006. He has had little success as a breeding stallion.

Court Masterpiece is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed promise and conitency in his early career, winning a competitive maiden race as a juvenile, winning the Listed Thoroughbred Stakes as a three-year-old and taking a valuable handicap race at Ascot Racecourse in 2004. He emerged as a top-class performer over seven furlongs and one mile as a five-year-old when he won the Lennox Stakes in England and the Prix de la Forêt in France. In 2006 he recorded his biggest victory when he won the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse, a track at which he had an exceptional record. Apart from his wins, he was placed in many important races including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Queen Anne Stakes and the Celebration Mile. He was retired to stud in 2008 but proved to be sub-fertile. After returning to racing with little success and was retired again at the end of 2009.

Ivanka was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 1992 she won two of her five races, taking a minor stakes race on her debut and winning the Group One Fillies' Mile in September. She also finished second in the Racing Post Trophy and third in the May Hill Stakes. She sustained a fatal training injury in late 1992.

Hawkbill American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hawkbill is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. During his racing career he competed in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Canada and Dubai. In 2015 he was beaten on his first two appearances but then recorded three consecutive wins in minor races. As a three-year-old in 2016 he made rapid progress, taking his winning run to six with victories in the Newmarket Stakes, Tercentenary Stakes and Eclipse Stakes. As a four-year-old he won the Aston Park Stakes and Princess of Wales's Stakes and was placed in the Coronation Cup, Grosser Preis von Berlin and Northern Dancer Turf Stakes. He began his fourth season by winning the Dubai City of Gold and followed up by recording his most valuable success when he took the Dubai Sheema Classic.

Idaho is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. In four years on the track he raced in seven countries, namely Ireland, France, England, Canada, the United States, Japan and the United Arab Emirates. He was the odds-on favourite for the St Leger Stakes but stumbled and unseated his rider. The highlight of his final season was a win in the Ormonde Stakes.

Cracksman is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promise when winning his only race as a two-year-old in 2016 before developing into a top class middle distance performer in the following year. As a three-year-old he won the Investec Derby Trial before running third when favourite for the 2017 Epsom Derby and then finishing runner up in the Irish Derby. He went on to win the Great Voltigeur Stakes and Prix Niel before recording an emphatic success in the Champion Stakes. He ended the year as the top-rated three-year-old in the world. In 2018 he won the Prix Ganay and the Coronation Cup before taking a second Champion Stakes.

Cliffs of Moher (horse) 21st-century racehorse trained in Ireland

Cliffs of Moher, called The Cliffsofmoher when racing in Australia, was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. As a three-year-old he won the Dee Stakes and finished second in the 2017 Epsom Derby. Cliffs of Moher was euthanised after breaking his shoulder in the running of the 2018 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on 6 November 2018.

Ulysses (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Ulysses is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a three-year-old he showed very good form, winning the Gordon Stakes and finishing fourth in the Breeders' Cup Turf. He was even better in 2017 when he took the Gordon Richards Stakes and went on to record Group 1 victories in the Eclipse Stakes and the International Stakes.

Benbatl British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Benbatl is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was unraced as a two-year-old in 2016 but in the following year he won the Hampton Court Stakes and was placed in both the Craven Stakes and the Dante Stakes as well as finishing fifth in the Epsom Derby. In 2018 he began the season in Dubai where he won the Singspiel Stakes and the Al Rashidiya before defeating a strong international field in the Dubai Turf. Crystal Ocean British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Crystal Ocean is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After finishing second on his only appearance as a juvenile he developed into a high-class middle-distance performer in the following year when he won the Gordon Stakes, finished second in the St Leger and was placed in both the Dante Stakes and the King Edward VII Stakes. He was even better in the following year when he took the Gordon Richards Stakes, Aston Park Stakes and Hardwicke Stakes before being narrowly beaten by his stablemate Poet's Word in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He later finished second to Enable in the September Stakes and to Cracksman in the Champion Stakes. In 2019 he won his first Group One race when taking the Prince of Wales's Stakes but was retired to stud in September 2019 after suffered a career-ending leg injury on the gallops.

Papal Bull is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Although he never won a Group 1 race he was rated at his peak as one of the best middle distance horses in the world. He was variously described by the men who rode him as "quirky", "a bit of a monkey" and "a lazy little devil". After winning one minor race as a juvenile in 2005 he improved in the following year to win the Chester Vase and the King Edward VII Stakes. He was even better in 2007 when he took the Princess of Wales's Stakes and the Geoffrey Freer Stakes. In 2008, as a five-year-old he failed to win a race but produced a career-best performance when narrowly beaten by Duke of Marmalade in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He made very little impact as a breeding stallion.

Eqtidaar Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Eqtidaar, is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promise as two-year-old when he won a maiden race on his debut and then finished fourth in the Sirenia Stakes. In the following year he was beaten in the Pavilion Stakes and the Carnarvon Stakes before recording his biggest win in the Commonwealth Cup. In two subsequent races that year he ran poorly in the July Cup and the Haydock Sprint Cup.

Veracious is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed promise as a juvenile in 2017 when she won the second of her two starts and went on to demonstrate high class form in the following year, winning the Atalanta Stakes and running third in both the Coronation Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2019 she recorded her biggest success when she took the Falmouth Stakes.

Mustashry is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He finished fourth on his only run as a juvenile and won two minor races in the following year. As a four-year-old in 2017 he improved to win two races including the Group 3 Strensall Stakes. After being gelded he returned in 2018 to win the Gala Stakes, Park Stakes and Joel Stakes. In 2019 he won the Lockinge Stakes and the Challenge Stakes.
