Protoryx is an extinct genus of goat-antelope. A new species, P. tuvaensis, was described by E. L. Dmitrieva and N. V. Serdyuk in 2011, from Russia. [1]

The Caspian seal is one of the smallest members of the earless seal family and unique in that it is found exclusively in the brackish Caspian Sea. It lives along the shorelines, but also on the many rocky islands and floating blocks of ice that dot the Caspian Sea. In winter and cooler parts of the spring and autumn season, it populates the northern Caspian coastline. As the ice melts in the summer and warmer parts of the spring and autumn season, it also occurs in the deltas of the Volga and Ural Rivers, as well as the southern latitudes of the Caspian where the water is cooler due to greater depth.

Laikas are aboriginal spitz from Northern Russia, especially Siberia but also sometimes expanded to include Nordic hunting breeds. Laika breeds are primitive dogs who flourish with minimal care even in hostile weather. Generally, laika breeds are expected to be versatile hunting dogs, capable of hunting game of a variety of sizes by treeing small game, pointing and baying larger game and working as teams to corner bear and boar. However a few laikas have specialized as herding or sled dogs.

The Sopkarga mammoth, alternately spelled Sopkarginsky mammoth, and informally called Zhenya, after the nickname of its discoverer, is a woolly mammoth carcass found in October 2012. It was discovered 3 kilometres (2 mi) away from the Sopkarga polar weather station on the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia. The Moscow News refers to it as the best preserved mammoth find in the past 100 years.

Serdyuk, or serdiukpl. serdiuky were mercenary infantry units kept by the Hetman's Zaporizhzhya Army from the second half of the 17th century through the first quarter of the 18th century and formed the Hetman's guard. Serdyuk recruited mainly from the Ukrainian population and the Kozaks of Cossack Hetmanate and Zaporizhian Sich. The average Serdyuk regiment consisted of 400-500 soldiers. They served at the border and inside the country, and guarded the Hetman's residence. By decree of the Russian Tsar on July 14, 1726, the convivial serdyuk's units were disbanded.
