The raid on La Goulette of 1612 was a naval attack by Spanish captain Antonio Pimentel over La Goulette, the main port of Ottoman Tunisia. The raid destroyed a local fleet of western ships built by French privateer Zymen Danseker, who had planned to use it to spread Barbary pirate activity to the Spanish territories in America.
In 1612, the galleys of Viceroy of Sicily, Pedro Téllez-Girón, Duke of Osuna got hold of an Ottoman spy in Catania, who revealed that Zymen Danseker, a Dutch privateer in the service of France, was working along with the Ottoman Tunisia to build a fleet of western-style sailing ships, complete with Ottoman and Dutch crews, which they planned to use to transverse the Atlantic and spread piratic action to the Spanish American territories. [1] Osuna recognized this as a threat, especially given that Danser had already provided the Regency of Algiers with western ships which had proved hard to defeat by the Spanish and Italian galleys. [2]
Obtaining emergency resources from the Parliament of Messina to deal with the threat as quickly as possible, [3] Osuna called up captain Antonio Pimentel, as well as Hernando de Aledo, a veteran of the Eighty Years' War experienced in amphibious warfare, [4] and planned for them to infiltrate Tunisia with a contingent of the Spanish Marine Infantry and destroy Danser's armada. [5] Pimentel set off with six galleys. [3]
Helped by a favorable weather, Pimentel arrived incognito in the Tunisian coast, where he waited until midnight before penetrating the channel of La Goulette with 100 men in chalupas. [3] They silently approached Danser's armada in the lake of Tunis, and after identifying three of the ten ships as loaded with booty from previous captures, [5] they employed incendiary devices to set the other seven in fire. Danser and the privateers slept on board with little alertness, [4] and when they realized the commotion, they panicked and many of them jumped overboard to escape the fire. [3]
Capitalizing on the subsequent confusion, Pimentel and his soldiers seized the three loaded ships, composed by a huge, 1,000-ton nao which was probably Danser's treasure ship and two smaller vessels, and escaped with them. [6] Artillery fired against them, too late to cause more than a few casualties, and upon daybreak they left Tunisia with the captured ships and the six galleys while the rest of Danser's armada was destroyed by the fire, killing many crewmen who could not escape. [7] The fire spread to land and caused much damage. [2]
Away from Tunisia, Pimentel contacted a squad of seven galleys of Naples commanded by Álvaro de Bazán y Benavides, who was in an identical mission to destroy Tunisian shipyards and armories recently built in Bizerte. Deciding not to return to Sicily without helping Bazán, Pimentel joined him with his fleet and attacked Bizerte in a two-pronged assault, sacking the city, destroying the targets and setting the place in fire. In this new attack they lost 10 men in exchange for over 500 enemies, capturing hundreds of prisoners. [8] [2] As a last prey in the way back home, they burned an African brigantine near Bona. [9]
Their success was received in Sicily with great celebration. Osuna sent part of the gained booty to the court, including prisoners and horses taken in the sackings, as well as rich gifts as bribes in order to ease his mandate in the future. [10] [6] Adventurers from several nations would travel to Sicily in order to join Osuna, [2] who would soon start building his own private fleet of saling ships. This fleet would perform a new raid on La Goulette in 1615 under the command of Francisco de Rivera, who later achieved a decisive victory against the Ottoman armada in the Battle of Cape Celidonia. Pedro Téllez-Girón, 3rd Duke of Osuna was a Spanish nobleman and politician. He was the 2nd Marquis of Peñafiel, 7th Count of Ureña, Spanish Viceroy of Sicily (1611–1616), Viceroy of Naples (1616–1620), a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece since 1608, Grandee of Spain, member of the Spanish Supreme Council of War, and the subject of several poems by his friend, counselor and assistant, Francisco de Quevedo.
The action of 3 October 1624 was a naval engagement that took place near San Pietro Island, Sardinia, during the war against the Barbary corsairs. A squadron of galleys from the Spain, Grand Duchy of Tuscany and Papal States under Diego Pimentel engaged a squadron of six Algerian ships under Azan Calafate. The Algerians were defeated, their flagship was destroyed, and four ships were captured. Also, the Christian slaves they owned were freed.

The Battle of Orbetello, also known as the Battle of Isola del Giglio, was a major naval engagement of the Franco-Spanish War of 1635. It was fought on 14 June 1646 off the Spanish-ruled town of Orbetello, on the coast of Tuscany, Italy, between a French fleet led by Admiral Armand de Maillé, Marquis of Brézé, and a Spanish fleet commanded by Miguel de Noronha, 4th Count of Linhares sent to break the blockade of Orbetello and relieve the town, besieged since 12 May by a French army under the command of Prince Thomas of Savoy. The Battle of Orbetello was tactically very unusual, since it was fought by sailing ships towed by galleys in a light breeze.
The Battle of Cape Celidonia took place on 14 July 1616 during the Ottoman–Habsburg struggle for the control of the Mediterranean. During its course, a small Spanish fleet owned by Viceroy of Naples Pedro Téllez-Girón, Duke of Osuna, under the command of Francisco de Rivera, was attacked by an Ottoman fleet that vastly outnumbered it while cruising off Cyprus. The Kingdom of Algiers, the Principalities of Kabyle, and other vassal tribes combined forces as one army under Hasan Pasha, son of Hayreddin Barbarossa, and Jafar Catania. The Spanish commander brothers, Alonso de Córdoba Count of Alcaudete and Martín de Córdoba, managed to hold the strongholds of Oran and Mers El Kébir, respectively, until the relief fleet of Francisco de Mendoza arrived to successfully defeat the offensive.
The Battle of Cape Corvo was a naval engagement of the Ottoman–Habsburg wars fought as part of the struggle for the control of the Mediterranean. It took place in August 1613 near the island of Samos when a Spanish squadron from Sicily, under Admiral Ottavio d'Aragona, engaged an Ottoman fleet led by Sinari Pasha. The Spanish were victorious and captured seven galleys and about 600 prisoners, among them the Bey of Alexandria and another 60 important Ottoman nobles.
The Battle of Girolata was a naval action fought between Genoese, Spanish, and Ottoman ships on 15 June 1540 in the Gulf of Girolata, on the west coast of the island of Corsica, amidst the war between Charles V of Spain and Suleiman the Magnificent. A Spanish squadron of 21 galleys led by the Genoese Gianettino Doria and the Spaniard Berenguer de Requesens surprised an Ottoman squadron of 11 galleys, anchored at Girolata, led by the Ottoman admiral Dragut, whom the commander of the Ottoman Navy, Hayreddin Barbarossa, had committed to raid the Italian coast after his victories in the Adriatic Sea the year before. As the crews of the Ottoman warships were ashore, distributing the booty from recent raids, the Spanish-Genoese fleet easily overtook them, taking all 11 Ottoman galleys and making 1,200 prisoners, among them Dragut, who was carried to Genoa and put, together with his captains, to row in Andrea Doria's galleys.
Luis Fajardo y Ruíz de Avendaño,, known simply as Luis Fajardo, was a Spanish admiral and nobleman who had an outstanding naval career in the Spanish Navy. He is considered one of the most reputable Spanish militaries of the last years of the reign of Philip II and the reign of Philip III. He held important positions in the navy and carried out several military operations in which he had to fight against English, Dutch, French and Barbary forces in the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. He is known for the conquest of La Mamora in 1614.
