Remix OS is a discontinued computer operating system for personal computers with x86 and ARM architectures that, prior to discontinuation of development, shipped with a number of 1st- and 3rd-party devices. Remix OS allowed PC users to run apps made for Android mobile apps on any compatible Intel-based PC. [4] [5]

In January 2016 Jide announced a beta version of their operating system called Remix OS for PC, which is based on Android-x86 — a x86-port of the Android operating system — and available for download for free [6] from their website. The beta version of Remix OS for PC brings hard drive installation, 32-bit support, UEFI support and OTA updates. Except for the free software licensed parts available on GitHub, [7] unlike Android-x86, the source code of Remix OS is not available to the public. [8] [9] [10]

Google Mobile Services (GMS) were removed from the Remix Mini after Remix OS Update: 3.0.207 [11] which Jide claimed was to "ensure a consistent experience across all Android devices for all." [12] Later comments suggest that there was a compatibility issue with some apps which resulted in Google requesting that GMS not be pre-loaded. [13]

On July 17, 2017, Jide announced that development of Remix OS for PC, as well as related consumer products in development, was being discontinued, stating that the company would be "restructuring [their] approach to Remix OS and transitioning away from the consumer space". [14] [15]

PhoenixOS [16] and PrimeOS [17] are similar Android-x86 based operating systems developed by other companies independently.

A Remix OS 3.0 device, the Remix Pro 2-in-1 tablet, had been announced in 2016, however, these will no longer be made. [20]

Legacy

Due to the popularity and affordability of the OS in Asia, similar projects have been made by various firms. Most notably PhoenixOS [16] by the Chinese-based Chaozhuo Technology, [21] and PrimeOS [17] by the Indian-based Floydwiz Technologies Private Limited.

Just like RemixOS, both are pre-dominantly closed source, with a lot of improved features intended to improve and optimise both OS's for newer applications and PC's. [22] [17]

Projects like OPENTHOS [23] and BlissOS [24] intend to release the project with open source in mind, but OPENTHOS is restricted to only Chinese Markets at the moment,[ citation needed ] and BlissOS is based on Android-x86. [25]

This article contains a list with gratis satellite navigation software for a range of devices. Some of the free software mentioned here does not have detailed maps or the ability to follow streets or type in street names. However, in many cases, it is also that which makes the program free, avoid the need of an Internet connection, and make it very lightweight. Very basic programs like this may not be suitable for road navigation in cars, but serve their purpose for navigation while walking or trekking, and for use at sea. Console Enterprises is an American technology company headquartered in Chico, California, that focuses on high-performance Android platform design. It is best known for its Console OS Kickstarter campaign, a project intended on developing a native Android distribution for the PC.

Resurrection Remix OS, abbreviated as RR, is a free and open-source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers, based on the Android mobile platform. UX designer and head developer Altan KRK & Varun Date started the project in 2012.

There are many apps in Android that can run or emulate other operating systems, via utilizing hardware support for platform virtualization technologies, or via terminal emulation. Some of these apps support having more than one emulation/virtual file system for different OS profiles, thus the ability to have or run multiple OS's. Some even have support to run the emulation via a localhost SSH connection (letting remote ssh terminal apps on device access the OS emulation/VM, VNC, and XSDL. If more than one of these apps that support these protocols or technologies are available on the android device, via androids ability to do background tasking the main emulator/VM app on android can be used to launch multiple emulation/vm OS, which the other apps can connect to, thus multiple emulated/VM OS's can run at the same time. However, there are a few emulator or VM apps that require that the android device to be rooted for the app to work, and there are others that do not require such. Some remote terminal access apps also have the ability to access Android's internally implemented Toybox, via device loopback support. Some VM/emulator apps have a fixed set of OS's or applications that can be supported.
