The snailfishes or sea snails, are a family of marine ray-finned fishes. These fishes make up the Liparidae, a family classified within the order Scorpaeniformes.

Paraliparis Genus of fishes

Paraliparis is a genus of fish in the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. It is found in benthic, benthopelagic and pelagic habitats in all the world's oceans.

Notoliparis is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. These fishes are found in deep Oceanic trenches in the South Atlantic South Pacific and Southern Oceans.

Careproctus Genus of fishes

Careproctus is a genus of snailfishes found in benthic and benthopelagic habitats in the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Southern Oceans. Whether they truly are absent from the Indian Ocean is unknown and might be an artifact of limited sampling. They range from shallow coastal seas in the far north of their range to the abyssal zone, at depths of 6 to 5,459 m (20–17,910 ft). In the Northern Hemisphere they mostly live shallower than Paraliparis, but this pattern is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere. Although almost entirely restricted to very cold waters, a single species, C. hyaleius, lives at hydrothermal vents.

Psednos is a genus of snailfishes found in all the world's oceans.

Aetheliparis rossi is a species of snailfish only known from the mesopelagic zone in the North Atlantic off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This species is found at depths of from 500 to 674 metres.

Liparis (fish) Genus of fishes

Liparis is a large genus of snailfish from the northern hemisphere. They are very common in temperate and cold waters. Chernova (2008) has proposed that the genus should be subdivided into five subgenera: Liparis, Neoliparis, Lycocara, Careliparis, and Lyoliparis.

Lethotremus Genus of fishes

Lethotremus is a monospecific genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Cyclopteridae, the lumpfishes or lumpsuckers. This genus is found in the northern Pacific Ocean. Following a 2017 taxonomic review by Lee et al., the species Lethotremus awae was reclassified as a species of Eumicrotremus, leaving the genus monotypic with Lethotremus muticus as its only species. Also known as the docked snailfish, is a species of lumpfish native to the Northeast Pacific. It is known from the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, where its range extends to Unimak Pass, and it occurs at a depth range of 58 to 330 m. It is a benthic species that reaches 11.5 cm in total length. It can be found on substrates of mud, rock, or gravel, and it is currently the only known species of Lethotremus, following a reclassification of the second described species in the genus as Eumicrotremus awae.

Acantholiparis is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belongong to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. These fishes are found in the northern Pacific Ocean.

Aetheliparis is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. One species known from the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North America and the other from the Pacific Ocean near New Zealand.

Allocareproctus is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. These fish are found in the northern Pacific Ocean.

The hardhead snailfish is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. This species is found in the northern Pacific Ocean where a single specimen was collected in June 2000 from near the Aleutian Islands at a depth of 285 m (935 ft). The length of the fish was 3.3 cm (1.3 in) SL. This species is the only member of the monospecific genus Lopholiparis. The specific name honors the collector of the holotype, William C. Flerx of the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The tadpole snailfish is a species of snailfish native to the north Pacific Ocean where it can be found at depths down to 3,383 metres (11,099 ft). This species grows to a length of 6.5 centimetres (2.6 in) SL. This species is the only known member of the monospecific genus Nectoliparis.

Osteodiscus is a genus of snailfishes native to the Pacific Ocean.

Pseudonotoliparis rassi, or Rass' snailfish, is a species of snailfish native to the northwestern Pacific Ocean where it is known from the Boussole Strait in the Kuril Islands. This species has been found at a depth of 2,200 metres (7,200 ft). This species grows to a length of 8.8 centimetres (3.5 in) SL. This species is the only known member of the monospecific genus Pseudonotoliparis.

Temnocora Species of fish

Temnocora is a monospecific genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. Its only species is Temnocora candida, the bigeye snailfish, which is found in the far northern Pacific Ocean where it is found at depths of from 64 to 400 metres. This species grows to a length of 10.6 centimetres (4.2 in) SL. This species is the only known member of its genus. The bigeye snailfish is usually found around sand, pebbles, and rocky bottoms. It is also harmless to humans.

Liparis atlanticus Species of fish

Liparis atlanticus, the Atlantic snailfish or Atlantic seasnail, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. This species is found in the western Atlantic Ocean off the eastern coast of North America.

Liparis tunicatus, or the kelp snailfish, is a species of snailfish from the genus Liparis. It can be found in marine, demersal waters at a depth range from 0 to 620 m (0–2,034 ft). The kelp snailfish lives in the Arctic and Northwest Atlantic Ocean among kelp. The species is common, at least around Greenland and Franz Josef Land. A bottom feeder, it eats small crustaceans. At Franz Josef Land, it spawns in March at a depth of 6–25 m (20–82 ft), with the egg clusters attached to kelp.

Careproctus ovigerus Species of fish

Careproctus ovigerus, commonly known as the abyssal snailfish, is a species of snailfish found in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. It is found at depths of 1,920–2,910 m (6,300–9,550 ft) off northern British Columbia and off Washington state.

Liparis gibbus Species of fish

Liparis gibbus, the polka-dot snailfish, variegated snailfish or dusky snailfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. This fish is found in Arctic waters. Juveniles of the species have been found to be biofluorescent.
