In law, an unincorporated area is a region of land that is not governed by a local municipal corporation; similarly an unincorporated community is a settlement that is not governed by its own local municipal corporation, but rather is administered as part of larger administrative divisions, such as a township, parish, borough, county, city, canton, state, province or country. Occasionally, municipalities dissolve or disincorporate, which may happen if they become fiscally insolvent, and services become the responsibility of a higher administration. Widespread unincorporated communities and areas are a distinguishing feature of the United States and Canada. In most other countries of the world, there are either no unincorporated areas at all, or these are very rare; typically remote, outlying, sparsely populated or uninhabited areas.

Ritchie is home to several dozen houses, the Wesley Township hall, a church, a grain elevator, and the house of the founder of Ritchie. His house is located at the eastern entry into Ritchie along Illinois Route 102. A railroad track passing through the community was dismantled in the 1990s, but the bridge that carried it over Forked Creek and Route 102 remains.

Beaver Creek flows past one half mile west of the community. The community is home to the Wisetown Baptist Church and the Wisetown Cemetery lies to the southwest along Beaver Creek. Greenville lies ten miles to the north and Carlyle is about 13 miles to the south along Illinois Route 127.
Croton is an unincorporated community located along the border of Delaware and Raritan townships in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. County Route 579 is the main north-south road through the area which consists of mostly forest within the Hunterdon Plateau and some houses and businesses along Route 579 and nearby New Jersey Route 12. The headwaters of the Wickecheoke Creek are located northeast of Croton before it heads downstream through the community on its way to the Delaware River.
Blairsville is an unincorporated community in Beaver Creek Township, Hamilton County, Illinois, United States. The community is located along County Route 10 6.5 miles (10.5 km) northeast of McLeansboro.
