Robert Nutting (born 1947) is a Republican politician from Maine who served six terms in the Maine House of Representatives. He re-joined the House after a two-year absence in 2008 and was elected speaker by the incoming Republican majority following the 2010 election,becoming the first Republican Maine House Speaker since 1974.
Nutting married Wendy Libby in 1968. They have three children and five grandchildren.
Nutting was born in Maine. His father was a roofer and plumber and his mother was a nurse. He has two older siblings,a sister and a brother,who are both retired teachers. He graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1965 and attained a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1970. [2]
From 1972 to 2003 Nutting owned and operated True's Pharmacy in Oakland. His pharmacy was forced to close following a billing dispute with the state Department of Human Services in which they were accused of over-billing MaineCare,the state's version of Medicaid,for up to $2.3 million. [3] [4] Nutting has received several industry awards and honors and served on the boards of directors of area business groups as well as having formerly been President of the Maine Pharmacy Association. [2] DHHS accused True's Pharmacy of overcharging on bed liners,latex gloves and adult diapers. [5]
Nutting left the Speakership on December 3,2012,after the Democrats retook the House majority. As of 2023,he is the last Republican Maine House Speaker.
Thomas Brackett Reed Jr. was an American attorney,author,parliamentarian and Republican Party politician from Maine who served as the 32nd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1889 to 1891 and 1895 to 1899. He represented Maine's 1st congressional district in the House from 1877 to 1899 and,prior to his time in Congress,represented Portland in the Maine legislature and served as Attorney General of Maine. In 1876,he was elected to represent Cumberland and York counties in the U.S. House and was re-elected for twelve consecutive terms.

He also received at honorary doctorate in Humanities from Pensacola Christian College in 2018.

Incumbent Republican governor Paul LePage won re-election to a second term,defeating Democratic nominee Mike Michaud,the U.S. representative from Maine's 2nd congressional district,and independent Eliot Cutler,an attorney and second-place finisher from the 2010 gubernatorial election. This is currently the most recent election that Maine elected a Republican governor. Primary elections were held on June 10,2014.

Maine Question 1,"Do you want to reject the section of Chapter 399 of the Public Laws of 2011 that requires new voters to register to vote at least two business days prior to an election?",was a 2011 people's veto referendum that rejected a bill repealing Election Day voter registration in Maine. The vote was held on November 8,2011 after being placed on the ballot due to supporters collecting the necessary number of signatures. The veto effort was successful,with 237,024 votes in favor of repeal to 155,156 against repeal.
