As of the 2020 census,the population was 152,199,making it the third-most-populous county in Maine. Its county seat is Bangor. The county was established on February 15,1816,from part of Hancock County when the area was still part of Massachusetts. Penobscot County is home to the University of Maine.

Entomologists and ecologists have urged the adoption of IPM pest control since the 1970s. IPM is a safer pest control framework than reliance on the use of chemical pesticides,mitigating risks such as:insecticide-induced resurgence,pesticide resistance and (especially food) crop residues.

To facilitate communication among members,the ESA is divided into four sections based on entomological interests,and six branches,based on geographic proximity. The Edith Marion Patch House is a historic house at 500 College Avenue in Old Town,Maine. Built about 1837,the house was from 1913 to 1954 it was the home of entomologist and writer Edith Marion Patch. She named the house Braeside for the Scottish bluebells that grew on the property. The house was rescued from demolition in 2000,and plans are in development to establish a research center and museum dedicated to Patch's life and work. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
Edith Marion Patch was an American entomologist and writer. Born in Worcester,Massachusetts,she received a degree from the University of Minnesota in 1901 and originally embarked on a career as an English teacher before receiving the opportunity to organize the entomology department at the University of Maine. She became the head of the entomology department in 1904,and,despite misgivings from several male colleagues about having a female department head,she remained in this post until her retirement in 1937. Patch is recognized as the first truly successful professional woman entomologist in the United States.

Schneider served as a Democratic State Senator from Maine's 32nd District,representing part of Penobscot County,including the population centres of Orono and Lincoln. She was first elected to the Maine State Senate in 2004 after serving from 1996 to 2004 in the town government of Orono. Unable to run for re-election in 2012 due to term-limits,Schneider was replaced in the State Senate by Democratic State Representative Emily Cain.
