Ruiner Pinball is a 1995 pinball video game developed by High Voltage Software (HVS) and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar. The game features two different pinball tables: the nuclear war-inspired Ruiner, and the medieval-themed Tower. Each table contains targets for the player to hit with the ball, increasing their score before the ball is lost. It was marketed as the first title to support the ProController, a redesigned Jaguar controller that added three more face buttons and two triggers.
As long-time fans of pinball games, HVS proposed the Ruiner pinball concept to Atari, who later requested a second table in the game. The game earned disapproval from game critics, who took issue with the game's audiovisual elements, controls, and unrealistic physics. Later reviewers were mixed on the game's reception, in retrospect. In 2022, it was included in the Atari 50 compilation.
Ruiner Pinball is a pinball game that features a choice of two different pinball tables: Ruiner and Tower. [2] [4] [5] [6] Tower is a three-screen high table with a set of flippers on each area, styled as a medieval fantasy setting with an evil sorceress. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Each table has its own main objective: in Ruiner, the player must lower the DEFCON level from 5 to 1 and launch an attack against an enemy country, while navigating the ball using interconnecting ramps to travel between sides. In Tower, the player must defeat the sorceress by casting three magic spells in order to destroy the castle and escape. [1] [3] [4] [5] [6] The player's score increases by hitting special targets before the ball is lost. [1] [4] [5] Both tables also have features such as extra balls and multi-ball play. [4] The player can select from three difficulty levels, as well as setting the number of players, and the number and texture of the ball(s). [4] [6]
Ruiner Pinball was created by High Voltage Software (HVS), which previously worked on a video game adaptation of the 1992 sports comedy film White Men Can't Jump for Atari Jaguar. [7] [8] [9] The game was programmed by Scott Corley as his first work in the video game industry. [6] [9] Corley entered the gaming industry in 1993 as one of the first members to work at HVS before becoming the company's vice president of software development. [10] [11] [12] He was also designer of the Ruiner table, while artist Mike Baker designed the Tower table. [6] [9] HVS proposed a pinball game to Atari Corporation, as many of the company's staff were pinball fans. [9] According to Corley, the game was named "Ruiner" after the song of the same name from the album The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. [9] As development continued, Atari requested a second table. [9] Baker created the game's artwork on a large hand-painted board, which was scanned into Deluxe Paint slowly, part by part. The game was first showcased at the 1994 Summer Consumer Electronics Show, announced for release in the second quarter of 1995 under the name Ruiner. [14] [15] [16] [17] It made additional appearances at tradeshows such as the 1995 ECTS Spring event and E3 1995. [18] [19] The game was later scheduled for an August release date and was also showcased during an event hosted by Atari dubbed "Fun 'n' Games Day" under its final title, Ruiner Pinball. [20] [21] [22] It was first published by Atari in North America on November 6, 1995, and later in Europe in December 1995. [23] [24] The game was marketed as the first to support the ProController, a redesigned Atari Jaguar controller that added three more face buttons and two triggers. Ruiner Pinball received generally unfavorable reviews. [31] [36] [37] Reviewers compared the game unfavorably to other contemporary pinball games such as Crüe Ball , Dragon's Fury , and Dragon's Revenge . [1] [33] [35] Evan Morris and Bryan Carter of Game Zero Magazine criticized the game's visuals, music, and ball physics, instead recommending pinball titles for rival consoles. [33] Andy Robertson, writing for Ultimate Future Games and The Atari Times, lambasted its audiovisual presentation, controls, and limited number of tables, stating that "Ruiner is not even a very good pinball". [32] [34] The Electric Playground 's Shane Garber described the gameplay as tedious, while criticizing the busy visuals for obscuring the ball's position. [29] MAN!AC's Robert Bannert also described how several game elements are lost in the hand-drawn backgrounds, and additionally criticized the lack of bonus rounds. [1]
Véronique Boissarie of Consoles + praised Ruiner's colorful graphics and playability, feeling that it was an overall well-designed and original pinball game. [28] Marc Abramson of the French ST Magazine faulted the game's audiovisual presentation, controls, and unrealistic physics. [2] VideoGames felt that the game failed to simulate the feeling of a real pinball game, while criticizing the graphics and layout of both tables. [35] GamePro described it as an enjoyable but unexceptional title, saying that it "looks like a plain old 16-bit pinball game". [38] Next Generation described how the animations and multi-level tables made good use of the video game format, but felt that these elements were "superfluous" due to the flawed gameplay and physics. [30] Atari Gaming Headquarters' Keita Iida wrote that "Ruiner Pinball resembles most 16-bit pinball games like Alien Crush and Crüe Ball in that realism is discarded". [3]
Retrospective commentary for Ruiner Pinball has been mixed. [39] [40] [41] Retro Gamer labelled it as a fun homage to Dragon's Fury and Alien Crush, while PCMag called it the best pinball game on the Atari Jaguar. [42] [43] Author Andy Slaven praised the game's colorful visuals, but felt that the unrealistic physics failed to capture the feeling of pinball. [39] In a retrospective review for The Atari Times, David Sherwin felt that the audiovisual elements for the Ruiner table were much stronger than the Tower table. [40]
The Jaguar is a home video game console developed by Atari Corporation and released in North America in November 1993. It is in the fifth generation of video game consoles, and it competed with fourth generation consoles, including the 16-bit Genesis, the 16-bit Super NES, and the 32-bit 3DO Interactive Multiplayer. Jaguar has a Motorola 68000 CPU and two custom 32-bit coprocessors named Tom and Jerry. Atari marketed it as the world's first 64-bit game system, emphasizing its blitter's 64-bit bus; however, none of its three processors have a 64-bit instruction set, as do later 64-bit consoles such as PlayStation 2 or Nintendo 64. The Jaguar launched with Cybermorph as the pack-in game, which received mixed reviews. The system's library ultimately comprises only 50 licensed games.

It is the sequel to Pinball Dreams, which was released earlier in the same year on multiple platforms. Pinball Dreams is a pinball simulation video game developed by Digital Illusions and originally released for the Amiga in 1992. It spawned several sequels, including Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions. The MS-DOS port was digitally released by Rebellion Developments along with its sequel and Pinball Mania on February 22, 2011 on GOG.com with support for Microsoft Windows. It received an OS X build on April 23, 2013; and a Linux build on August 19, 2014.
Alien vs Predator is a 1994 first-person shooter developed by Rebellion Developments and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar. It was also distributed in Japan by Mumin Corporation, where it became a pack-in game for the console. It is the first entry in the Alien vs. Predator franchise developed by Rebellion. Taking place in a simulation depicting the fall of the Golgotha training base camp, the game offers three playable scenarios: Alien, Predator, or a human of the Colonial Marines. The player is presented with a series of interconnected sublevels and ships to progress through. Each character has different objectives, abilities, weapons, and disadvantages.
Atari Karts is a kart racing video game developed by Miracle Designs and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar in North America on December 22, 1995, and Europe in January 1996. In the game, the players take control of one of several playable characters, each with differing capabilities. One or two players race against computer-controlled characters in four cups consisting of multiple tracks over four difficulty levels. During races, the players can obtain power-ups placed at predetermined points in the tracks and use them to gain an advantage. It plays similarly to Super Mario Kart and features Bentley Bear, main protagonist of the arcade game Crystal Castles (1983).
White Men Can't Jump is a 1995 basketball video game developed by High Voltage Software (HVS) and published by Atari for the Atari Jaguar. It is loosely based on the 1992 20th Century Fox film of the same name. The game features a loose version of basketball known as streetball. It can be played against computer-controlled opponents, or up to four human competitors using the Team Tap multitap.
Obsession is a pinball video game developed and originally published by Unique Development Sweden for the Atari STe on December 2, 1994. It is the first video game to be created by UDS and one of the last official releases for the Atari ST platform after being discontinued in 1993 by Atari Corporation. Defender 2000 is a 1996 scrolling shooter video game developed by Llamasoft and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar. Part of Atari's 2000 series of arcade game revivals, it is an update of Eugene Jarvis' arcade game Defender (1981). The premise takes place in a future where the Alpha Promixian empire attack mining settlements on distant resource planets. Gameplay is divided into three modes, with the player acting as part of the System Defense Team commanding the Threshold ship to defeat waves of invading aliens while protecting humans.
BattleSphere is a space combat simulation video game developed by 4Play for the Atari Jaguar. The game was released in 2000, with the enhanced edition BattleSphere Gold released in 2002. Set during a future war between seven alien races, the factions agree to confine their hostilities to a tournament with the galaxy at stake. Gameplay consists of five modes, each featuring distinct scenarios and objectives. Up to 16 players can participate in a deathmatch mode via local area network (LAN) play.

Set in the future on an industrialized Earth, the player takes on the role of a resistance member piloting a robot to overthrow the military dictatorship of the Iron Fist Corporation. The player is tasked with various objectives while fighting enemies in multiple missions.
Battlemorph is a 1995 shooter video game developed by Attention to Detail (ATD) and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar CD. It is the sequel to Cybermorph (1993), a pack-in game for the Atari Jaguar. Taking place 30 years after the events of the original game, the player pilots the morphing infiltration fighter War Griffon in an extermination mission against the Pernitia empire, which plans to launch a full-scale invasion to eradicate humanity and take over the galaxy after being pushed back to their home planet. The player is tasked with various objectives, while fighting against enemies and bosses, across eight galaxy clusters in order to liberate them from control of the empire.
Attack of the Mutant Penguins is an action-strategy video game developed by Sunrise Games and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar in Europe in December 1995, and North America on March 15, 1996. A port titled Mutant Penguins was released in 1996 by GameTek for MS-DOS. The plot follows Bernard and Rodney, intergalactic heroes defending earth against alien invaders disguised as penguins. The player must dispatch the alien penguins before they reach a doomsday weapon, in the form of a weighing scale. Earth also has real penguins, who help the player by fighting the aliens and counteracting their weight on the scale.
Missile Command 3D is a 1995 shoot 'em up video game developed by Virtuality Entertainment and published for the Atari Jaguar. As part of Atari's 2000 series of arcade game revivals, it is an update of Dave Theurer's arcade game Missile Command (1980). The game has the player defend six cities from incoming missiles by launching anti-ballistic missiles.
Power Drive Rally is a 1995 racing video game developed by Rage Software and published by Time Warner Interactive for the Atari Jaguar. It is a conversion of the 1994 racing game Power Drive, which was released on multiple platforms. Revolving around rallying, the game features six real vehicles and circuits based on eight locations around the world. The players participate in various racing events and earn money by qualifying or winning to continue the rally season and repair damage to the car.
Breakout 2000 is a 1996 action video game developed by MP Games and published by Telegames for the Atari Jaguar. Part of the 2000 series by Atari Corporation, it is a remake of the arcade game Breakout (1976), and one of the last officially licensed releases for the platform. Featuring a similar premise to Breakout, the player must destroy a layer of brick lines by repeatedly bouncing a ball spawned off a paddle into them and keep it in play. Gameplay modifications to the original game include a third-person perspective behind the paddle in a pseudo-3D playfield, power-ups, bonus levels, enemies, varying level designs, and multiplayer features.

Dactyl Joust is an unreleased action-platform video game that was in development by High Voltage Software and planned to be published by Atari Corporation on a scheduled November 1995 release date exclusively for both the Atari Jaguar and the Atari Jaguar CD add-on. It was intended to be a remake of John Newcomer's 1982 arcade game Joust, where players take control of a knight riding a pterodactyl, instead of a flying ostrich, on a first-person perspective battling and defeating groups of enemy knights riding dactyls. The game formed part of a partnership deal between Atari Corp. and Williams Entertainment that included plans to update and release some of the latter's early arcade games for the Jaguar platform.
