Longhorn beetle Family of beetles characterized by long antennae

The longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae), also known as long-horned or longicorns, are a large family of beetles, with over 26,000 species described, slightly more than half from the Eastern Hemisphere. Most species are characterized by extremely long antennae, which are often as long as or longer than the beetle's body. In various members of the family, however, the antennae are quite short and such species can be difficult to distinguish from related beetle families such as the Chrysomelidae. The scientific name of this beetle family goes back to a figure from Greek mythology: after an argument with nymphs, the shepherd Cerambus was transformed into a large beetle with horns.

Donaciinae Subfamily of beetles

The Donaciinae, aquatic leaf beetles, are a subfamily of the leaf beetle family Chrysomelidae, characterised by distinctly long antennae. They are found in mainly the Holarctic, with very few species in the Southern Hemisphere.

Disteniidae Family of beetles

The Disteniidae are a small family of beetles in the superfamily Chrysomeloidea, traditionally treated as a group within the Cerambycidae.

Lepturinae Subfamily of beetles

Lepturinae, the lepturine beetles, is a subfamily of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae), containing about 150 genera worldwide. This lineage is most diverse in the Northern Hemisphere. Until recently the subfamily Necydalinae was included within the lepturines, but this has been recently recognized as a separate subfamily. Nine tribes are usually recognized today, with a tenth, Caraphiini, created in 2016. A few genera are of uncertain placement within the subfamily.

Cassida Genus of beetles

Cassida is a large Old World genus of tortoise beetles in the subfamily Cassidinae. Several species of Cassida are important agricultural pests, in particular C. vittata and C. nebulosa on sugar beet and spinach. The thistle tortoise beetle has been used as a biological control agent against Canada thistle.

Strangalepta is a genus containing only one species, Strangalepta abbreviata, a longhorned beetle in the family Cerambycidae.

Acmaeopsoides rufula is a species of beetle in the family Cerambycidae, and the only species in the genus Acmaeopsoides. This beetle is distributed in Canada, and United States.

Chrotoma is a genus of long-horned beetles in the family Cerambycidae. There is only one described species in Chrotoma, C. dunniana.

Poecilium is a genus of long-horned beetles in the family Cerambycidae. There are at least 20 described species in Poecilium.

Trachyderini Tribe of beetles

Trachyderini is a tribe of long-horned beetles in the family Cerambycidae. There are at least 140 genera and 650 described species in Trachyderini.

Trichoferus campestris Species of beetle

Trichoferus campestris, the velvet longhorned beetle, is a species of long-horned beetle in the family Cerambycidae. It is native to the southeastern palearctic, from Japan through to Armenia and southeastern European Russia, and is an invasive species in North America. The velvet longhorned beetle has begun to expand its range within Europe as well, spreading west.
