Salina Jebet Kosgei (born 16 November 1976 in Simotwo, Keiyo District) is a long distance runner from Kenya. She is a Commonwealth Games gold medalist, has competed at the Olympics and has won various marathons, including the 2009 Boston Marathon.
She began her athletics career while at Simotwo Primary School. She moved to Kapkenda Girls High School and won several national high school titles in heptathlon, 800 metres and 200 metres. She graduated in 1993 and was subsequently recruited by the Kenya Prisons Service. [1]
She competed at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, finishing fifth over 800 metres. After giving birth to her first child in 1996, she decided to try longer distances. [1]
Kosgei won women's 10,000 metres race at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Her time, 31:27.83, was a new Commonwealth Games Record.
She competed at the 2003 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Vilamoura, Spain, but did not finish better than 41st. Kosgei competed for Kenya at the 2008 Summer Olympics in marathon, finishing tenth.
On 20 April she won the 2009 Boston Marathon timing 2:32:16, a second ahead of Dire Tune of Ethiopia. [2] She attempted to defend her title the following year's race but the honours went to Teyba Erkesso while Kosgei finished in third place. [3] She had two other marathon races in 2009, coming third at the Grottazzolina Marathon and 15th at the 2010 New York City Marathon. She also won the Florence Half Marathon. [4]
In 2011, she was in the top ten at the Lisbon Half Marathon, Portugal Half Marathon and Yokohama Women's Marathon. Her best result that year was a run of 2:32:06 hours for fifth at the San Diego Marathon. She did not compete in 2012 and made only two appearances in 2013, coming fourth at the Stockholm Marathon and winning the Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes. [5]
She is married to hurdler Barnabas Kinyor. They have a son and a daughter, Billy and Ruth, born in 1996 and 2001, respectively. [6]

Tegla Chepkite Loroupe is a Kenyan long-distance track and road runner. She is also a global spokeswoman for peace, women's rights and education. Loroupe holds the world records for 25 and 30 kilometers and previously held the world marathon record. She was the first African woman to hold the marathon World Record, which she held from 19 April 1998 until 30 September 2001. She is the three-time World Half-Marathon champion. Loroupe was also the first woman from Africa to win the New York City Marathon, which she has won twice. She has won marathons in London, Rotterdam, Hong Kong, Berlin and Rome.
Derartu Tulu NL COL is an Ethiopian former long-distance runner, who competed in track, cross country running, and road running up to the marathon distance. She won 10,000 metres titles at the 1992 Barcelona and 2000 Sydney Olympics, and a bronze in the event at the 2004 Athens Olympics. At the World Championships in Athletics, Derartu took silver in the 10,000 m in 1995, and a gold in 2001. She was a three-time IAAF World Cross Country champion.
Werknesh Kidane, is an Ethiopian long distance runner from Tigray who competes in both 5000 and 10,000 metres. She has won numerous medals at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and represented Ethiopia at the Summer Olympics in 2000, 2004 and 2012. She was the silver medallist at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics and a gold medallist at the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
Tirunesh Dibaba is an Ethiopian athlete who competes in long-distance track events and international road races. She has won three Olympic track gold medals, five World Championship track gold medals, four individual World Cross Country (WCC) adult titles, and one individual WCC junior title. Tirunesh was the 5,000 metres world record holder until 2020 when her compatriot Letesenbet Gidey set a new world record. She is nicknamed the "baby-faced destroyer."
Lucy Wangui Kabuu is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the 5000 and 10,000 metres events. She has represented Kenya twice at the Summer Olympics, finishing in the top ten of the 10,000 m race in both 2004 and 2008. Her personal bests of 14:33.49 minutes for the 5000 m and 30:39.96 minutes for the 10,000 m make her one of Kenya's fastest ever runners in the events.
