San Bautista is a small city in the Canelones Department of southern Uruguay.

The Departamento de Canelones , with an area of 4,536 km2 (1,751 sq mi) and 518,154 inhabitants, is located in the south of Uruguay. Its capital is Canelones.

Location

The city is located on the intersection of Route 6 with Route 81, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of the centre of Montevideo.

Route 6 is a national route of Uruguay. In 1981, it was assigned the name Joaquín Suárez. It connects Montevideo with the northeast of Rivera Department, at Vichadero, with an extension reaching the border with Brazil. The road is approximately 428 kilometres long till Vichadero.

Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 in an area of 201 square kilometres (78 sq mi). The southernmost capital city in the Americas, Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata.

History

According to the Act of Ley Nº 388, on 28 June 1854 it was holding the status of "Villa" (town). On 20 June 1901, it was given the status of "Pueblo" (village) by the Act of Ley Nº 2.699. [1] Its status was elevated to "Ciudad" (city) on 8 June 1993 by the Act of Ley Nº 16.380. [2]

Population

In 2011 San Bautista had a population of 1,973. [3] The Intendencia de Canelones has estimated a population of 4,045 for the municipality. [4]
