Santa Rosa is a small city in the Canelones Department of southern Uruguay.
The Departamento de Canelones , with an area of 4,536 km2 (1,751 sq mi) and 518,154 inhabitants, is located in the south of Uruguay. Its capital is Canelones.
Uruguay, officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is a country in the southeastern region of South America. It borders Argentina to its west and Brazil to its north and east, with the Río de la Plata to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Uruguay is home to an estimated 3.44 million people, of whom 1.8 million live in the metropolitan area of its capital and largest city, Montevideo. With an area of approximately 176,000 square kilometers (68,000 sq mi), Uruguay is geographically the second-smallest nation in South America, after Suriname.
Santa Rosa is also the name of the municipality to which the city belongs.
The city is located on Km. 51 of Route 6, only 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) northeast of its intersection with Route 11 and 24 kilometres (15 mi) east of Canelones, the capital city of the department. Other nearby towns are: San Bautista 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi) to the northeast, San Antonio 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) to the northwest, San Jacinto 18.5 kilometres (11.5 mi) to the east and Sauce 18 kilometres (11 mi) to the south.
Route 6 is a national route of Uruguay. In 1981, it was assigned the name Joaquín Suárez. It connects Montevideo with the northeast of Rivera Department, at Vichadero, with an extension reaching the border with Brazil. The road is approximately 428 kilometres long till Vichadero.
Route 11 is a national route of Uruguay. In 1983, it was assigned the name José Batlle y Ordóñez. It connects Atlántida to Ecilda Paullier.
Canelones is the capital of the department of Canelones in Uruguay. Its name is derived from a species of cinnamon, which is called "canelón", growing along the banks of the homonymous river. Since 2010, the city is also the seat of the municipality of Canelones.
It was declared a "Pueblo" (village) by Decree of 19 August 1879. On 15 May 1925 its status was elevated to "Villa" (town) by the Act of Ley Nº 7.837, [1] and then on 29 August 1972 to "Ciudad" (city) by the Act of Ley Nº 14.081. [2]
According to the 2011 census, Santa Rosa had a population of 3,727. [3] In 2010, the Intendencia de Canelones had estimated a population of 7,749 for the municipality during the elections. [4]
