Sazali Abdul Samad is a professional bodybuilder in Malaysia. [1] He was born in Batu Pahat, Johor Darul Takzim [2] on 8 August, 1967. His bodybuilding activity began in 1987, after registering as a member of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Bodybuilding Training Center at Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur.
Sazali has been involved in bodybuilding seriously since he was 25 years old. [3] In addition to training at Bukit Aman, Sazali also received training at the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa gymnasium, Kuala Lumpur. He is also a member of the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation.
Sazali was a police officer with the rank of sub-inspector. [4] [5] [6] His last day as a police officer was on 30 September, 2016. In the same year, following his retirement, Sazali established the Sazali Samad Academy [7] located at i-Tech Tower, Shaftsbury, Cyberjaya, Selangor, to unearth new talents in the world of bodybuilding. The academy was launched by the then Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin. [8]
In 2007, Sazali began coaching for Malaysia in preparation for Malaysian bodybuilding athletes for the SEA Games in Korat. Some of the athletes under Sazali's training were Tun Jahafar Abdul Rahim, Mohd Salim Mat Salleh, and Buda Anchah.
Sazali's first victory in bodybuilding was in the Mr. Kuala Lumpur/Selangor for the Bantamweight (65kg) category in 1989. This was followed by a victory in Mr. Malaysia in 1991, [4] which qualified him to represent the country at the Asian Amateur Bodybuilding Competition in South Korea.

In September 2015, Sazali was suspended from Malaysian bodybuilding for failing a drug abuse test by the Malaysian Anti-Doping Agency (Adamas) due to his negligence in consuming supplements containing prohibited substances without his knowledge. [16] [17] It resulted in Sazali receiving a 4-year suspension.
At the tail-end of his suspension and following his participation and victory in the 75kg category of the China Sport Show Fearless Bodybuilding Physique & Bikini Championship in Shanghai, China in May 2018, Sazali was suspended again for 4 years until September 2023 by the Malaysian Body Building Federation’s (MBBF) disciplinary committee. [18] [19] Thus, Sazali decided to leave the Bodybuilding Federation Malaysia (MBBF), citing double standards. [20]
To continue with his bodybuilding career, Sazali appealed twice to have his suspension reduced but was rejected by the association. [21] [22] [23] [24]
2023 sees Sazali make a comeback to the competitive stage of professional bodybuilding after serving two consecutive suspensions spanning eight years. His first major competition is the Nabba Universe 2023 in October 2023 in the United Kingdom. [25]
Sazali has three sons and two daughters. One of Sazali's son, Muhd Hazim Sazali, is following in his father's footsteps and has also ventured into the world of competitive bodybuilding. [26]
