Scanline VFX is a global visual effects and animation company founded 1989 in Munich. The studio was led by VFX Supervisor Stephan Trojansky. The company has 7 locations including Munich, Stuttgart, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal, London, and Seoul. [1]
Scanline has recently completed work on films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) such as Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Black Widow , Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals (all 2021), and films based on DC Comics such as Zack Snyder's Justice League , The Suicide Squad (both 2021) and The Batman (2022). They have also worked on Terminator: Dark Fate , Gemini Man (both 2019), Godzilla vs. Kong , Free Guy and Don't Look Up (all 2021).
In terms of television, Scanline has worked on Game of Thrones season eight (2019), Shadow and Bone (2021-), Foundation (2021-), Cowboy Bebop (2021) and Stranger Things season four (2022).
In November 2021, Netflix announced that it would acquire Scanline with plans for it to operate as a standalone business working with a variety of clients. [2] [3] The acquisition closed in the first quarter of 2022. [4]
Scanline is responsible for the development of its proprietary fluid effects software, Flowline. Scanline was the sole developer of Flowline and in 2008, was the recipient of a Scientific and Technical Achievement Academy Award for the software. [5]
In 2010, Scanline was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for its work on Clint Eastwood's Hereafter , for which it was the sole visual effects vendor. [6]
Scanline received a BAFTA nomination for Best Special Visual Effects in 2010 for its work on Iron Man 3 [7] as well as a second Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects in 2014, for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. [8]
In 2010, Scanline won its first Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture for Hereafter. [9] Scanline has two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Visual Effects to its credit for its work on Season Four [10] and Season Eight [11] of Game of Thrones as well as an HPA Award for Outstanding Visual Effects [12] and a Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Created Environment for episode The Iron Throne. Framestore specializes in visual effects for film and prestige TV, advertising, rides, and immersive experiences. It is the largest production house in Europe, employing roughly 3,000 staff, including 1,000 in London, and 1,500 across studios in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, Melbourne and Mumbai.
The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for the best achievement in visual effects. It has been handed to four members of the team directly responsible for creating the film's visual effects since 1980.

He is known for his scores for the HBO series Game of Thrones, for which he was nominated for Grammy Awards in 2018 and 2020. Pixomondo (PXO) is an Academy and Emmy award-winning international visual effects and virtual production company with studios in Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and London. The company provides virtual production and visual effects for feature films, television, and commercials. As of 2019, PXO employs over 655 people worldwide.
DNEG is a British-Indian visual effects, computer animation and 3-D conversion studio that was founded in 1998 in London, and rebranded as DNEG in 2014 after a merger with Indian VFX company Prime Focus; it was named after the letters "D" and "Neg" from their former name.
Cinesite is an independent, multinational business which provides services to the media and entertainment industries. Its head office in London opened for business in 1994, initially offering services in visual effects for film and television, subsequently expanding to include animation.
Sean Andrew Faden is a computer graphics animator. In 2003 he was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Special Effects for his work on the film xXx, and in 2008, he was nominated for a Visual Effects Society Award in the category of Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Broadcast Program or Commercial. In 2021, he was nominated for an Academy Award on VFX work in Mulan.
SilhouetteFX began as a rotoscoping tool for the visual effects industry. SilhouetteFX has been expanded to include capabilities facilitating paint, warping and morphing, 2D to 3D conversion and alternative matting methods. As of V6, SilhouetteFX retains all of the aforementioned capabilities now embedded in a node-based digital compositing application.
Christopher Townsend is a Visual Effects Supervisor. He has worked in the visual effects industry for nearly 30 years. For over a decade, he was an artist and supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic, and in 2007 became a freelance visual effects supervisor. He worked on Journey to the Center of the Earth, the first ever stereoscopic motion picture shot and released digitally, The Wolverine, Ninja Assassin, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Captain America: The First Avenger. He was nominated for a BAFTA and an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Iron Man 3, oversaw nearly 3000 shots on Avengers: Age of Ultron and was the overall supervisor for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, for which he received his second nomination for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. He was the overall Production VFX Supervisor on Captain Marvel, and following that, for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was once again nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. For his first foray into television and streaming, in 2024 he was nominated for an Emmy, for his overall VFX Supervising on the second season of the Disney+ show Loki.

Dane Allan Smith is a film and television producer, and visual effects producer. Smith manages daily operations as founding partner of Daneiam Inc., a studio through which Smith has served as visual effects producer for films including Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Sinister 2 (2015), Deadpool, Star Trek Beyond, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). He has also worked as a visualization executive producer, and founded Artificial Intelligence + ML Visual Effects resource Parts + Labor in 2023.
The Third Floor, Inc. is an American previsualization, postvisualization, and virtual reality company based in Los Angeles. It was founded by a group of artists that had worked together on Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith at Lucasfilm, and named the company after the location where they worked. The company has primarily focused on the previsualization aspect of film, television, game and themed attraction production; but as of the mid-2010s has been developing and applying an expertise in virtual production to support visualization, motion capture, camera layout and shooting on set.
Adam Chazen is an American special effects producer who has worked in television and film, and is best known for his work on the cable television series Game of Thrones, for which he has received five Emmy Awards.
The Hollywood Professional Association Award for Outstanding Visual Effects - Television is an annual award given by the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) to post production workers in the film and television industry, in this case visual effects artists. It was first awarded in 2006, and outside of 2008 and 2010, has been presented every year since. From 2006 to 2012, the category was titled HPA Award for Outstanding Compositing - Television. She has worked on all of acclaimed filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki's films to date and has received four VFX-Japan Awards for her efforts, along with an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One (2023), making Shibuya the first woman of color to win in this category.
