Scanline VFX is a global visual effects and animation company founded 1989 in Munich. The studio is led by VFX Supervisor Stephan Trojansky. The company has 7 locations including Munich, Stuttgart, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal, London, and Seoul. [1]

Scanline has recently completed work on films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) such as Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Black Widow , Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals (all 2021), and films based on DC Comics such as Zack Snyder's Justice League , The Suicide Squad (both 2021) and The Batman (2022). They have also worked on Terminator: Dark Fate , Gemini Man (both 2019), Godzilla vs. Kong , Free Guy and Don't Look Up (all 2021).

In terms of television, Scanline has worked on Game of Thrones season eight (2019), Shadow and Bone (2021-), Foundation (2021-), Cowboy Bebop (2021) and Stranger Things season four (2022).

In November 2021, Netflix announced that it would acquire Scanline with plans for it to operate as a standalone business working with a variety of clients. [2] [3] The acquisition closed in the first quarter of 2022. [4]

Accolades

Scanline is responsible for the development of its proprietary fluid effects software, Flowline. Scanline was the sole developer of Flowline and in 2008, was the recipient of a Scientific and Technical Achievement Academy Award for the software. [5]

In 2010, Scanline was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for its work on Clint Eastwood's Hereafter , for which it was the sole visual effects vendor. [6]

Scanline received a BAFTA nomination for Best Special Visual Effects in 2010 for its work on Iron Man 3 [7] as well as a second Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects in 2014, for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. [8]

In 2010, Scanline won its first Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture for Hereafter. [9] Scanline has two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Visual Effects to its credit for its work on Season Four [10] and Season Eight [11] of Game of Thrones as well as an HPA Award for Outstanding Visual Effects [12] and a Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Created Environment for episode The Iron Throne. [13]

It was founded by a group of artists that had worked together on Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith at Lucasfilm, and named the company after the location where they worked. The Umbrella Academy is an American superhero television series based on the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. Created for Netflix by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, it revolves around a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who reunite to solve the mystery of their father's death and the threat of an imminent apocalypse. Adam Chazen is an American special effects producer who has worked in television and film, and is best known for his work on the cable television series Game of Thrones, for which he has received five Emmy Awards.

Stephan Trojansky is a German-American visual effects artist. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Visual Effects for the film Hereafter. Trojansky served as president of the Scanline VFX.

Kiyoko Shibuya is a Japanese visual effects director and film producer. She has worked on all of acclaimed filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki's films to date and has received four VFX-Japan Awards for her efforts, along with an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One (2023), making Shibuya the first woman of color to win in this category.
