School District 64 Gulf Islands is a school district in British Columbia. It includes the islands off southern Vancouver Island in the Strait of Georgia. This includes Saltspring Island as well as Galiano, Mayne, Saturna, Pender Islands. It also recently went through a reconfiguration causing the outer island kids grade 8 and up to go to Pender for 3 years and then to Saltspring.

History

One of the earliest school districts was established on Salt Spring Island. The Salt Spring Island School District was created in 1869 in the Colony of Vancouver Island prior to the island colony joining mainland British Columbia.

Joseph Despard Pemberton was a surveyor for the Hudson's Bay Company, Surveyor General for the Colony of Vancouver Island, a pre-Confederation politician, a businessman and a farmer. He was born in 1821 in Dublin, Ireland and died in 1893 in Oak Bay, British Columbia. Joseph Pemberton laid out Victoria's town site, southern Vancouver Island and townsites along the Fraser River. He married Teresa Jane Grautoff and they are the parents of Canadian painter Sophie Pemberton. The town of Pemberton was named after him.

Wallace Island Marine Provincial Park is a provincial park in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada. The park includes almost all 72 hectares of Wallace Island. Land on the northern side of Princess Cove extending north towards Chivers is private. This long, thin island lies in Trincomali Channel south-west of Galiano Island, and about 2 km (1.2 mi) northeast of Saltspring Island. There are a few hiking trails, and camping is permitted in designated areas.

It operates scheduled flights, charter air service and tours based in Ganges in Harbour Air Seaplanes livery with the Salt Spring Air name on the side of the aircraft and specializes in routes between the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. Along with West Coast Air, Harbour Air and Seair Seaplanes, Salt Spring Air is one of the four airlines that operate in the Vancouver Harbour Water Airport and Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre. Scheduled flights by the company also operate between the Gulf Islands and the Vancouver International Airport.

Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) is a grade 8 to 12 public school in School District 64 Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada. It is located on Salt Spring Island and is attended by students from Saltspring Island, Pender Island, Galiano Island, Mayne Island and Saturna Island. The school also has an International Education program and is home to the Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts (GISPA). The GISS Improv Troupe has very close ties with Ladysmith Secondary School's drama department. GISS is also known for their cafeteria and culinary program, which has won a $1500 grant towards their garden and school composting.

The Salt Spring Dollar is a local currency issued by the Salt Spring Island Monetary Foundation to promote local history, art and goodwill on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada.
