Shramik Bharti is a nonprofit organization established in 1986 and headquartered in Kanpur, India. Its goal is to eradicate poverty by empowering women and disadvantaged communities. [2]

History

In the early 1980s, Kanpur was a hub of mills which employed 100,000 workers. During the 1982 recession, many of the mills scaled down or shut down operations. The mill workers were not well-educated and could not find other work. [1] [4]

Sodic land reclamation program

Shramik Bharti has helped farmers learn organic methods to reclaim sodic land. [5] [6]

Water, sanitation, and hygiene

Shramik Bharti and WaterAid India work together on WASH projects. [7] [8] [9] [10]

Community radio station – Waqt Ki Awaaz

Shramik Bharti launched the community radio station Waqt Ki Awaaz in September 2013. The radio station sits in village Bairi Dariyav of Maitha block in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh; its airwaves cover a radius of 15 km and reach about 300,000 people in 300 villages. Programming is used to initiate discussion and raise issues about open defecation, alcohol addiction, elderly people, girl education, and diseases. The station broadcasts seven hours daily. AIR's FM LRS was inaugurated on 1 July 2000 at 06:00 hours in Kodaikanal relaying Madurai programs in the frequency 100.5 MHz. 100.5 was so popular that LRS was upgraded to an FM Channel in just two months. The channel covered a radius of about 200km due to its location at 2200 meters above MSL at Kodaikanal. KODAI FM is popularly known as it is the biggest individual FM channel in India, in both area coverage and listenership.

Azhagi is a freeware transliteration tool, which enables its users to type in a number of regional Indian languages, including Tamil, Hindi, and others, using an English keyboard. In 2002, The Hindu dubbed Azhagi as a tool that "stand[s] out" among various similar software "emerg[ing] nearly every other day". Since year 2000, Azhagi has provided support for Tamil transliteration; this was later expanded to nearly 13 Indian languages, featuring 16 total built-in languages as of the day of writing.

Mandakini Ki Awaaz or MKA 90.8 FM Radio is a community radio station providing FM services to 1098 villages covering approximately 3.5 lakh population of Chamoli, Tehri and Pauri Districts of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The station was founded in 2001 by Manvendra Negi with narrowcasting radio programs and advocacy for the community radio licence process. This was the first radio station in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, situated at Prithvirajnagar (Sena-Garsari) Tehsil Ukhimath and among the first in India to start advocacy for the community radio license process in India.

Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat aired on Sony TV from 25 Feb 2013 to 19 July 2013. The story was mainly based on a triangle love story between Aradhya, Madhav and Rahul.

Surinder Mohan (Suri) Sehgal is an Indian-American philanthropist with a long career as a crop scientist, seedsman, entrepreneur, and leading global hybrid seed industry expert. His research and professional successes in the areas of plant breeding and genetics, ag biotechnology, intellectual property, business management, and seed industry development were carried out in executive capacities in several companies in the United States, Belgium, and Germany. After the divestment of a group of four seed companies that Sehgal founded and ran with his wife, Edda Sehgal, the couple created two nonprofit organizations to promote rural development in Suri's country of origin: Sehgal (Family) Foundation in 1998 in the US, and S M Sehgal Foundation in India. The foundation focuses on water security, food security, and social justice, particularly empowerment. A proponent of corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability, Sehgal has also provided support individually and through the foundations for projects related to agriculture research, the preservation of biodiversity and the conservation of natural resources.

Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 is a community radio station established in 2012 by S M Sehgal Foundation with seed funding from the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, under its Agricultural Technology Management Agency scheme. The radio station is located in the Agriculture Research Station of village Naugaon, in Alwar district, Rajasthan.

The Shahjahan ki baoli, more commonly known as the Choron ki baoli, is a baoli in Maham, Haryana, India. The structure, which was built during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan, collects and holds rainwater for use by the nearby town of Maham. While no longer in mainstay use, the baoli has been persevered as a tourist attraction.

Kalavati Devi is an Indian mason who became an award-winning toilet builder in Kanpur. She transformed her own community by installing a 50-seat toilet and then moved to other communities. She has helped build 4,000 toilets improving the lot particularly for women and children. In 2019 she was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar.
