The South Carolina State Armory, built in 1905, is an historic National Guard building located at 1219 Assembly Street near the State House in Columbia, South Carolina. [2] [3]

History

The armory was designed in the Early Commercial style by noted Columbia architect William Augustus Edwards and his partner Frank C. Walter. It was used as an armory until 1964 when the South Carolina National Guard vacated it for a new building. It is now privately owned and is used for office space,

On February 5, 1999, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. [1]

The South Carolina State Museum has four floors of permanent and changing exhibits, a digital dome planetarium, 4D interactive theater and an observatory. The State Museum, is located along the banks of the Congaree River in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. It is the largest museum in the state, and is a Smithsonian Affiliate and part of the American Alliance of Museums. Positioned on an old shipping canal that dates back to pre-Civil War times, the museum is widely recognized as a resource for South Carolina history and lifestyle. The museum opened on October 29, 1988 and is housed in what it calls its largest artifact, the former Columbia Mills Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. When the mill opened in 1894, manufacturing cotton duck cloth, it was the first totally electric textile mill in the world. It was also the first major industrial installation for the General Electric corporation. On certain levels of the museum, the original flooring has been kept intact, distinguishable by hundreds of textile brads and rings that became embedded in the floor while it was still being used as a mill. The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum is located within the Columbia Mills Building, and is the oldest museum exhibit in Columbia.

The South Carolina State House is the building housing the government of the U.S. state of South Carolina, which includes the South Carolina General Assembly and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. Located in the capital city of Columbia near the corner of Gervais and Assembly Streets, the building also housed the Supreme Court until 1971.

New York State Armory , also known as "The Arsenal," is a historic National Guard armory building located at Ogdensburg in St. Lawrence County, New York. It is a rectangular, two story structure built of ransom ashlar block with central pavilions projecting on its north and south elevations. The main facade features a central pavilion with a tower rising above the roofline and terminating in a corbeled and crenellated parapet. It was designed by noted Syracuse architect Horatio Nelson White.

McMaster School United States historic place

The McMaster School, built in 1911, is an historic building located at 1106 Pickens Street on the corner of Senate Street in Columbia, South Carolina. It was designed by noted Columbia architect William Augustus Edwards of the firm of Edwards and Walter. It was named for Col. F. W. McMaster (1826-1899), the first chairman of the local school board and was used as a grammar school until 1956.

The rectangular, reinforced concrete, Art Deco building sits on the north side of downtown Columbia. Today the building is owned by the city and used as a youth recreation center.

A readiness center supports the training, administration, and logistics of National Guard units by providing assembly space, classrooms, weapons and protective personal equipment storage, and training space. Walton Grange No. 1454 United States historic place

Walton Grange No. 1454 is a historic Grange building located at 137 Stockton Avenue in Walton in Delaware County, New York, United States. Designed by architects Randall and Gilbert of Walton and built in 1886, it consists of a two-story administration building with an attached gable roofed drill shed. It was occupied from 1886-1896 by the 33rd Separate Company then vacated in 1896 and converted for use as a school and a Grange hall. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 as Walton Grange #1454-Former Armory.

The B.B. Kirkland Seed and Distributing Company is a three-story historic warehouse building at 912 Lady Street in Columbia, South Carolina. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Gettysburg Armory United States historic place

The Gettysburg Armory is a former National Guard armory located at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The 61x96 ft Art Deco facility was constructed as a $43,331 Works Projects Administration project for the local National Guard unit. The two-story building housed a garage and repair shop for military vehicles, a classroom, administrative space, and a drill hall. From the beginning, the Armory was used not only by the National Guard, but also by the local community, for sporting events and community meetings. In 1944, the Gettysburg Armory was used as a temporary German Prisoner of War camp while the official camp was being constructed on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Later the building was designated as a public fallout shelter by the National Fallout Shelter Survey.

Palmetto Building

The Palmetto Building, built during 1912–1913, is an early skyscraper in Columbia, South Carolina. It was designed by architect Julius Harder, and Wilson and Sompayrac served as supervising architects. Upon completion it was the tallest building in South Carolina.

Lancaster Armory United States historic place

Lancaster Armory, also known as Brigadier General Charles P. Stahr Armory, is a historic National Guard armory located at Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is a "T"-shaped brick building consisting of a 3-story administration building built in 1937, with a 1 1/2-story drill hall built in 1928, executed in the Colonial Revival style. It measures approximately 90 feet by 200 feet. The building was firebombed in 1982. The building once played host to the Lancaster Red Roses. It was used as a public venue under the name The Stahr Center. In 2018 it was renovated and now houses Decades, a boutique bowling alley and retro-arcade.

The Deming Armory is a historic armory in the United States, located at 301 South Silver Avenue in Deming, Luna County, New Mexico. The building was built for the United States Department of the Army in 1915–16, and is currently being used as the premises for the local museum in Deming. The armory was added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties in 1978 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
