Southport light rail station is a major public transport interchange in the Gold Coast suburb of Southport, the Gold Coast's CBD. [1] The Southport light rail station and the Southport bus station (located adjacent to light rail station) provide a bus and light rail interchange for the Gold Coast central business district. The station opened in July 2014 with the introduction of the G:link light rail system. [2]

Contents

Translink provides an integrated public transport network for the whole of South East Queensland. [3] Surfside buslines under contract from Translink provides high frequency and suburban bus services from the Southport bus station. Buses provide connections to the surrounding suburbs. The light rail service, known as G:link runs from Broadbeach South to Helensvale via the key activity precinct Surfers Paradise.

Location

The Southport light rail station is located centrally in the Gold Coast CBD precinct. Attractions nearby include Chinatown, Australia Fair shopping centre and the Gold Coast TAFE campus. [4]

Translink is the public transit agency for Queensland, and is part of the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Translink was first introduced by the Queensland Government in June 2003 to orchestrate bus, ferry, rail and light rail services. They work with Brisbane Airtrain, Transport for Brisbane, RiverCity Ferries, Queensland Rail and other operators to provide services. Translink operates an integrated ticketing system across Queensland and the go card system to allow the use of one ticket on multiple services in South East Queensland.

The Helensvale railway station is the northern terminus of the system, while Broadbeach South is the southern terminus. The line opened on 20 July 2014 and was extended northwest from Gold Coast University Hospital to Helensvale on 17 December 2017.

The go card is an electronic smartcard ticketing system developed by Cubic Corporation, which is currently used on the Translink public transport network in South East Queensland, Australia. To use the go card, users hold the card less than 10 cm away from the reader to "touch on" before starting a journey, and must do the same to "touch off" the service at the end of the journey. The cost of each journey is deducted from the go card balance.

Parkwood East light rail station is located off Faldo Court and adjacent to Smith Street Motorway on the eastern portion of Parkwood, a suburb on the Gold Coast. The station is serviced by the Gold Coast G:link light rail system and provides a bus connection. Parkwood East light rail station services the local residential community.
