The University of St Andrews Canoe Club, abbreviated to StAUCC, is a sports club at the University of St Andrews. The club's primary focus is recreational whitewater kayaking, but it also engages in other aspects of paddlesport, including surf kayaking, sea kayaking and canoeing. [2] Additionally, members of StAUCC take part in various competitive kayaking disciplines, such as whitewater slalom, canoe polo and wildwater racing. [3]
StAUCC is affiliated to the University of St Andrews Athletic Union [4] and to the Scottish Canoe Association. [5] The club was founded for the academic year of 1974–1975. [1] The earliest known captain of the club was Gordon Harwell in 1981. [6]
The club is based in St Andrews mainly operating out of their boat shed near East Sands. [7]
As of 2014 [update] , the club is governed by a committee of 14 positions. [6] The club captain leads the club but their role is more administrative than the name suggests, with the vice/competition's captain being responsible for leading competitive endeavours. [8]
The club competes nationally at British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) events, including canoe polo, wildwater racing and canoe slalom. [9] [10]

The club also competes within Scotland at the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Canoe polo tournament in Glasgow [13] and at the canoe polo Scottish division tournaments which are organised by the Scottish Canoe Association. [14]
In 2007, the club was featured on BBC's Coast [15] as part of a segment on student life at the University of St Andrews.
The club undertakes charitable and outreach work. They have worked with Sense Scotland in the past to help people with various disabilities enjoy canoeing and kayaking, one of these was reported on in the Perthshire Advertiser [16]
The club is also regularly featured in the university's student media. [17] [18]
Jonny Hawkins was a member with the club from 2008 to 2012, and was the club captain in 2009, [6] (his second year at the university). Jonny was selected for the 2011 British Universities Kayaking Expedition (BUKE). [19] After this he went on to sea kayak around Scotland [20] and Hong Kong. [21] In the summer of 2013 Jonny was part of an expedition to Borneo, [22] with the aims of exploring never before paddled whitewater and also of performing research for a conservation charity Heart of Borneo. [23]
Canoeing is an activity which involves paddling a canoe with a single-bladed paddle. Common meanings of the term are limited to when the canoeing is the central purpose of the activity. Broader meanings include when it is combined with other activities such as canoe camping, or where canoeing is merely a transportation method used to accomplish other activities. Most present-day canoeing is done as or as a part of a sport or recreational activity. In some parts of Europe canoeing refers to both canoeing and kayaking, with a canoe being called an open canoe.
Wildwater canoeing is a competitive discipline of canoeing in which kayaks or canoes are used to negotiate a stretch of river speedily. It is also called "Whitewater racing" or "Downriver racing" to distinguish it from whitewater slalom racing and whitewater rodeo or Freestyle competition.
Paddle Scotland, formerly the Scottish Canoe Association or SCA, is the national governing body for canoeing, kayaking and other paddlesport in Scotland.
Canoe slalom is a competitive sport with the aim to navigate a decked canoe or kayak through a course of hanging downstream or upstream gates on river rapids in the fastest time possible. It is one of two kayak and canoeing disciplines at the Summer Olympics, and is referred to by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Canoe/Kayak Slalom. The other Olympic canoeing discipline is canoe sprint. Wildwater canoeing is a non-Olympic paddlesport.
The International Canoe Federation (ICF) is the umbrella organization of all national canoe organizations worldwide. It is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, and administers all aspects of canoe sport worldwide. 157 countries are affiliated with the ICF after seven national federations were added at the 2008 ICF Congress in Rome.
Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of The National Water Sports Centre is located in the hamlet of Holme Pierrepont near Nottingham, England and on the River Trent. It is used for many differen sports and has received investment which has enabled a major refurbishment of existing facilities as well as introduction of new facilities.
Canoe freestyle is a discipline of whitewater kayaking or canoeing where people perform various technical moves in one place, as opposed to downriver whitewater canoeing or kayaking where the objective is to travel the length of a section of river. Specialised canoes or kayaks (boats) known as playboats are often used, but any boat can be used for playing. The moves and tricks are often similar to those performed by snowboarders, surfers or skaters, where the athlete completes spins, flips, turns, etc. With modern playboats it is possible to get the kayak and the paddler completely airborne while performing tricks. The competitive side of playboating is known as freestyle kayaking.
Richard Munro Fox is a British slalom canoeist who competed for Great Britain from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. He won eleven medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with ten golds and a bronze. Fox also won the overall World Cup title three times and the Euro Cup four times.
Canoe Wales is the national governing body for paddlesport in Wales. It covers all branches of the sport from recreational canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and rafting to whitewater racing, slalom racing and wildwater racing; flatwater sprint racing and marathon racing; canoe sailing; canoe polo; surf kayaking and canoeing; and extreme racing. The organisation has over 2,700 members including individual paddlers as well as affiliated club members. Full adult members of Canoe Wales are also by default Welsh members of Paddle UK.
Canoe Kayak Canada is the governing body of competitive canoeing and kayaking disciplines in Canada. The three specific disciplines represented are flatwater, whitewater and marathon. Canoe Kayak Canada officially replaced the name "Canadian Canoe Association" in 2005, although the former title is still used by the organization. The name change came about from a desire to include the kayaking discipline in the organization's name.
The University of St Andrews Athletic Union is the umbrella organisation for the support and development of sport and sports clubs at the University of St Andrews. Run by students, for students, it provides structure and advice to over 50 clubs and several thousand members.

The European Canoe Association (ECA) is the umbrella organization for canoeing sport in Europe. It was founded in Rome, Italy, on December 11, 1993. The organization has 45 member countries. The association was recognized by the International Canoe Federation at the ICF congress in Acapulco in 1994.
Candice Clark is an American former slalom canoeist who competed in the 1970s. She was once married to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Clark is the daughter of Louise Clark, owner of the Lafayette hillside memorial. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1979 with a degree in business administration. She is now married to Ronald J. Kauffman.
The Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI) was formed in 1964 and is the governing body for canoeing and kayaking in Northern Ireland. CANI is the Northern Ireland Division of British Canoeing. British Canoeing is the governing body for the UK. CANI, through British Canoeing is affiliated to the International Canoe Federation.
Rosalyn "Ros" Lawrence is an Australian slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2006. She also competes in wildwater and creeking events.
Andrew Hamilton is a British canoeist based in Nottingham, England. He competed in slalom canoeing C1 from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s and whitewater racing, single canoe (C1) and double canoe (C2) for Great Britain between 2000 and 2010.
The Wildwater Canoeing World Championships are an international event in canoeing organized by the International Canoe Federation. The World Championships have taken place every two years from 1959 to 1995 and then from 1996 to 2001, from 2011 the event is annual.
