History
The company was established in October 2000, initially with the name London Transit. Other names used included Stevenage Link and Transit Group.
Its original depot was at Hare Street, near Buntingford, Hertfordshire. In 2004, another base was established at Stansted Business Park, and Hare Street closed in 2006. The Braintree depot was opened in December 2007, and the Stansted site was vacated during 2008. There were two sites used at Stansted; initially an enclosed yard on Second Avenue, but after Braintree opened, an open parking area on First Avenue was used instead. The outstation at Saffron Walden (Viceroy Coaches, Bridge Street) ultimately replaced Stansted.
Although mainly associated with contracted bus routes in north west Essex and east Hertfordshire, Stansted Transit also briefly ran commercial routes in Milton Keynes (2001–02) and Stevenage (2003–06).
A coach division, called Stansted International Travel, was started in 2006.
On 4 June 2009, Stansted Transit entered administration. By 5 June, Essex County Council took control of all of their services which continued to operate as normal until a formal tender process took place later in the summer.
Stansted Transit operated 22 bus routes, in Essex and on the Hertfordshire, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire borders, as well as many school bus contracts tendered by Essex County Council.
By September 2009, the 22 bus routes were reallocated to other bus companies, most to Hedingham Omnibuses.
Bishop's Stortford is a historic market town in Hertfordshire, England, just west of the M11 motorway on the county boundary with Essex, 27 miles (43 km) north-east of central London, and 35 miles (56 km) by rail from Liverpool Street station. Bishop's Stortford had an estimated population of 40,089 in 2017.
Uttlesford is a local government district in Essex, England. Its council is based in the market town of Saffron Walden. At the 2011 Census, the population of the district was 79,443.
The MCW Metrobus was a two and three-axle double-decker bus manufactured by Metro Cammell Weymann (MCW) between 1977 and 1989, with over 4,000 built. The original MkI was superseded by the MkII which had a symmetrical windscreen with an arched top in 1981, although production of the original MkI continued for the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive and London Regional Transport until 1983 and 1985 respectively. The Metrobus was conceived as an integral product manufactured completely by MCW, but Alexander and Northern Counties also bodied some examples.
Saffron Walden is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative. She is currently the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and a minister in the GEO.
Arriva Shires & Essex is a bus operator providing services in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire, with services extending to Oxfordshire and Greater London. Until 2002 its operations included Colchester. It is a subsidiary of Arriva UK Bus.
Sullivan Buses is a bus company based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, England. Founded in 1998, it operates local bus services in and around Hertfordshire and north London including school services, rail replacement bus services in and near London, bus links in Surrey to and from Thorpe Park and vehicle hire for television programmes.
First London was a bus company operating services in east and west Greater London, England. It was a subsidiary of FirstGroup and operated buses under contract to Transport for London. It was formed in the late 1990s through the acquisition of three London bus operators. First London's garages were sold off between December 2007 and June 2013 with the last closing in September 2013.
First Essex is a bus company operating services in the county of Essex. It is a subsidiary of FirstGroup.
MTL Trust Holdings was an English bus, coach and train operator based in Liverpool. MTL was originally part of the MPTE. To comply with the Transport Act 1985, the bus operations were divested into a new independent company, Merseyside Transport Limited (MTL). Merseyside PTA retained shareholding, but the company was purchased by its management and staff in 1993. On 17 February 2000, MTL was purchased by Arriva.
Saffron Walden Town Football Club is a football club based in Saffron Walden, Essex, England. They are currently members of the Essex Senior League and play at Catons Lane.
Boro'line Maidstone, previously Maidstone Borough Council Transport was a municipal bus operator in Maidstone and the surrounding villages. Maidstone Borough Council Transport was formed in 1974 from Maidstone Corporation Transport following local government reorganisation. In 1986 Boro'line Maidstone was formed as an arm's length company of Maidstone council from the operations of Maidstone Borough Council Transport. The company had a brief London operation. Following financial difficulties, the London operation was sold to Kentish Bus, and after a period of administration, the assets of the Maidstone operation was sold to Maidstone & District in 1992.
McKindless was a Scottish bus operator, operating a number of bus routes throughout Greater Glasgow. The company was based in Newmains and had a depot in Parkhead.
Selkent is a bus company operating in South London and some parts of north-west Kent. It is a subsidiary brand of Stagecoach London and operates services under contract to Transport for London.
London United is a bus company operating mostly in west and south-west Greater London. It is a subsidiary of the RATP Group and operates services under contract to Transport for London.
Halifax Joint Committee was an independent bus company operating in and around Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Its buses were painted in the livery of the former County Borough of Halifax whose buses and services were taken over by the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive in April 1974.
Avon Buses was a bus operator based in Prenton providing services in Merseyside and Cheshire, England.
Glenvale Transport (GTL) was a bus company that operated services in Liverpool between July 2001 and July 2005.
London Traveller was a bus operator in London in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was partially owned by Yorkshire Traction, and was sold to Thorpes in October 2001.
Padarn Bus was a bus company based in Llanberis, Gwynedd. It operated 21 routes in North Wales plus three summer services in Snowdonia National Park. Many of its vehicles and routes were acquired when it merged with larger company KMP. The operator, who were being investigated by North Wales Police over allegations of fraud at the company, closed down on 30 May 2014.
Galloway European Coachlines or Galloway Travel Group is a bus and coach operator based in Mendlesham, Suffolk operating extended tours, day excursions and school services around Mid Suffolk under contract to Suffolk County Council. and two coach services under contract to National Express, from Ipswich to London Victoria Coach Station and Heathrow Airport.
