Transport in Norway is highly influenced by Norway's low population density, narrow shape and long coastline. Norway has old water transport traditions, but road, rail and air transport have increased in importance during the 20th century. Due to the low population density, public transport is somewhat less built out in rural areas of Norway, however public transport in, and around cities is well developed.
Stavanger is a city and municipality in Norway. It is the fourth largest city and third largest metropolitan area in Norway and the administrative centre of Rogaland county. The municipality is the fourth most populous in Norway. Located on the Stavanger Peninsula in Southwest Norway, Stavanger counts its official founding year as 1125, the year the Stavanger Cathedral was completed. Stavanger's core is to a large degree 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses that are protected and considered part of the city's cultural heritage. This has caused the town centre and inner city to retain a small-town character with an unusually high ratio of detached houses, and has contributed significantly to spreading the city's population growth to outlying parts of Greater Stavanger.
Sandnes is a city and municipality in Rogaland, Norway. It lies immediately south of Stavanger, the 4th largest city in Norway and together, the Stavanger/Sandnes area is the third-largest urban area in Norway. The urban city of Sandnes lies in the extreme western part of the vast municipality and it makes up about 5% of the total land area of the municipality.
Stavanger Airport, Sola is an international airport located in Rogaland county, Norway. The airport is located 6 NM southwest of the centre of the city of Stavanger inside the neighboring municipality of Sola and it serves the Stavanger, Sola, Sandnes area as well as serves as a regional hub for southwest Norway. It is Norway's third-busiest airport, with both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter traffic for the offshore North Sea oil installations. In addition, the Royal Norwegian Air Force operates Westland Sea King search and rescue helicopters from Sola Air Station.
Strand is a municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Ryfylke. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Jørpeland. The municipality lies across the fjord from the city of Stavanger. The Ryfast tunnel system connects Stavanger and Strand by a very long undersea tunnel.
Vygruppen, branded as Vy, formerly Norges Statsbaner AS and formerly branded internationally as the Norwegian State Railways, is a government-owned railway company which operates most passenger train services and many bus services in Norway. The company is owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport. Its sub-brands include Vy Buss coach services, CargoNet freight trains through and the Swedish train transport company Tågkompaniet. In 2009 NSB carried 52 million train passengers and 104 million bus passengers. On 24 April 2019, passenger train and bus services were rebranded by as Vy.
Bergen Airport, Flesland, alternatively Bergen Flesland Airport or simply Flesland Airport, is an international airport located at Flesland in the city and municipality of Bergen, Vestland, Norway. Opened in 1955, it is the second-busiest airport in Norway, with 6,306,623 passengers in 2018. Flesland is operated by the state-owned Avinor. Until 1999 Flesland Air Station of the Norwegian Air Force was co-located at the airport.
NOR-WAY Bussekspress is a Norwegian intercity coach network, with lines between Kristiansand in the south, Namsos in the north, Trysil in the east and Bergen in the west, and with Oslo as the main hub. The lines are operated by many different companies, while they are marketed through NOR-WAY Bussekspress AS, a company owned jointly by the operating companies.
Boreal Norge AS is a Norwegian public transport operator. Established as a subsidiary of CGEA Transport in 1999, it operates through its subsidiaries buses, ferries and trams in the counties of Finnmark, Nordland, Rogaland, Sør-Trøndelag and Troms, primarily through the purchase of former monopolists. Trondheim Bilruter or TBR was a municipally owned bus company in Trondheim, Norway between 1951 and 1974. It was merged with the tram operators Trondheim Sporvei and A/S Graakalbanen in 1974 to form Trondheim Trafikkselskap. It is now part of Team Trafikk, a subsidiary of Nettbuss.
Kolumbus AS, formerly Rogaland Kollektivtrafikk FKF, is the public transportation administration in Rogaland, Norway and organised as a county agency. The agency is responsible for planning, marketing and organising the public transport in Rogaland, including buses and passenger ferries, but does not perform any transport itself. Instead it awards public service obligation (PSO) contracts to independent operators. The agency was created on January 1, 2002 and has 35 employees and offices at Byterminalen in Stavanger. All buses operated in Rogaland are branded as Kolumbus and painted green. Before Kolumbus was created, there was several smaller companies who was responsible for the transport in the different parts of Rogaland. However, because of complications with bus lines not overlapping with each other, the bus companies finally decided to unite and become Kolumbus, or Rogaland Kollektivtrafikk as it is also known as.
Stavangerske is a defunct Norwegian ferry operator based in Stavanger. A subsidiary of Det Stavangerske Dampskibsselskap (DSD), it operates car- and passenger ferries primarily in Rogaland county. The company's ferries with less than 100 seats are operated by Fjordservice. It merged with Tide in 2007.
TIRB is a Norwegian transport company based in Finnsnes, Troms og Finnmark. The corporation has six subsidiaries performing cargo- and passenger transport, and service and maintenance of heavy vehicles. The company operates in Nordland, Oslo, Troms og Finnmark and Viken. The company was founded in 1919, and the largest owners are Hurtigruten Group (71.3%) and six municipalities (14.2%).
Pan Trafikk was a Norwegian bus company operating in and around the city of Bergen. The company was created as a merger between Åsane Billag and Bilruta Fana–Os–Milde. The company had depots in Åsane, Fana, Os and Søreide. In 1999, the company merged with Bergen Sporvei to create Gaia Trafikk, which was later merged with Hardanger Sunnhordlandske Dampskipsselskap, forming Tide.
Bussen Trafikkselskap was a Norwegian bus company that operated the yellow city bus in Kristiansand and surrounding areas Vennesla, Søgne and Songdalen. The company had about 300 employees and operates on contract with Agder Kollektivtrafikk. Nettbuss Sør took over the local buses in Kristiansand 01.01.2011.
Det Stavangerske Dampskibsselskap AS (DSD) is a private Norwegian transport and shipping company, established in 1855 with headquarters in Stavanger, Norway. The company operates internationally through its subsidiary companies DSD Shipping AS and DSD Cargo AS. The company is owned by the Hermansen family, through the holding company Folke Hermansen AS, after Folke Hermansen gained control of DSD in 1991. Chairman is Yuhong Jin Hermansen, while Ingvald Løyning has been CEO since 2015.
Farsund Airport, Lista is an airport situated on the Lista peninsula in the municipality of Farsund in Agder county, Norway. The village of Vestbygd lies on the southwest side of the airport and the small village of Ore lies on the northeast side. The airport features a 2,990-meter (9,810 ft) concrete runway aligned 14/32. Previously it also had a 1,494-meter (4,902 ft) runway aligned 09/27. Farsund Airport, Lista is the civilian sector of the now closed Lista Air Station. Previously a regional airport, it is now only used for general aviation.
The Ålgård Line is a closed, but not abandoned, railway line between Ganddal and Ålgård in Rogaland, Norway. The 12.24-kilometer (7.61 mi) line was built as a narrow gauge branch line of the Jæren Line by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) and opened in 1924. It runs through the villages of Foss-Eikeland and Figgjo in Sandnes to Ålgård in Gjesdal. Several proposals were made for the Ålgård Line to become the first part of the main line from Stavanger to Oslo, but instead the Sørlandet Line was connected to the Jæren Line in 1944. At the same time, the Ålgård Line was upgraded to standard gauge.
L. Rødne og Sønner AS is a passenger ferry operating company in Rogaland and Vestland, Norway. It operates 14 ferries, of which 11 are fast ferries. The company operates public transport for the transport authorities Kolumbus and Skyss, boat ambulance services for Stavanger Hospital Trust, Fonna Hospital Trust and Bergen Hospital Trust, and since 1974 charter tourist services in Lysefjord. The company was founded in 1956, based in Sjernarøy and owned by ten members of the Rødne family.
Fjordservice AS is a defunct passenger ferry company that operated routes from Stavanger to Ryfylke in Rogaland, Norway. It operated from 1990 to 2008. The routes operated were Stavanger–Mekjarvik– Kvitsøy, Stavanger–Usken–Hommersåk and Stavanger–Byøyene.
