Transport in Norway is highly influenced by Norway's low population density, narrow shape and long coastline. Norway has old water transport traditions, but road, rail and air transport have increased in importance during the 20th century. Due to the low population density, public transport is somewhat less built out in rural areas of Norway, however public transport in, and around cities is well developed.
Oslo Airport, alternatively referred to as Oslo Gardermoen Airport or simply Gardermoen, is the international airport serving Oslo, Norway, the capital and most populous city in the country. A hub for Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines and Widerøe, it connects to 26 domestic and 158 international destinations.
Vygruppen, branded as Vy, formerly the Norwegian State Railways, branded as NSB, is a government-owned railway company which operates most passenger train services and many bus services in Norway. The company is owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport. Its sub-brands include Vy Buss coach services, CargoNet freight trains and the Swedish train transport company Tågkompaniet. In 2009, NSB carried 52 million train passengers and 104 million bus passengers. On 24 April 2019, passenger train and bus services were rebranded as Vy.
The Gardermoen Line is a high-speed railway line between Oslo and Eidsvoll, Norway, running past Lillestrøm and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen. The line is 64 kilometres (40 mi) long and replaced the older Hoved Line as the main line north-east of Oslo. The older Hoved Line now handles commuter and freight traffic, while the Gardermoen Line handles high-speed passenger trains and freight trains laden with jet fuel for the airport. Both lines are owned by Bane NOR.
NOR-WAY Bussekspress is a Norwegian intercity coach network, with lines between Kristiansand in the south, Namsos in the north, Trysil in the east and Bergen in the west, and with Oslo as the main hub. The lines are operated by many different companies, while they are marketed through NOR-WAY Bussekspress AS, a company owned jointly by the operating companies.
Vy Buss, formerly branded as Nettbuss, is the largest bus company in Norway, owned by Vy. It was established on 10 February 2000 as the continuation of the bus operations from former NSB Biltrafikk. In addition to bus services in major parts of Norway, it also operates buses in Sweden through subsidiaries.
Fosen Trafikklag is a company operating buses and ferries in Trøndelag and Østlandet in Norway. In total the company has approximately 750 vehicles and 16 ships, though numerous of them operate by subsidiaries.
Mosjøen Airport is a regional airport serving the town of Mosjøen in Vefsn Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. In 2014, Mosjøen Airport had 61,480 passengers. It is owned and operated by the state-owned Avinor.
Mo i Rana Airport is a regional airport serving the town of Mo i Rana in the municipality of Rana in Nordland county, Norway. The airport is located about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) outside the town in the village of Røssvoll. In 2014 Mo i Rana Airport served 104,474 passengers. It is operated by Avinor.
Hemne Orkladal Billag or HOB was a Norwegian transport company based in Kyrksæterøra, Sør-Trøndelag. HOB was founded in 1937 and merged with Trondheim Trafikkselskap in 2001 to form Team Trafikk.
AS Oslo Sporveier or the Oslo Public Transport Administration is a municipally owned limited company that is responsible for planning, marketing and organising the public transport in Oslo, Norway. The company does not operate any public transport, but instead either awards public service obligation (PSO) contracts or negotiates contracts with Oslo T-banedrift and Oslo Sporvognsdrift concerning the operation of Oslo T-bane and the Oslo Tramway.
Unibuss, formerly known as AS Sporveisbussene and Nexus Trafikk, is a Norwegian bus company based in Oslo, Norway. It is a subsidiary of the municipal public transport group Sporveien, and was created in 2003 to allow the company to compete for the public service obligation (PSO) contracts through which Oslo was to operate its bus system. In 2017 Unibuss carried 98 million passengers on 759 buses operating on 203 routes and covering a total annual road distance of almost 41.4 million kilometres. With 1860 employees, the company had an operating income in that year of NOK 1684 million.
Stor-Oslo Lokaltrafikk AS or SL was the public transport administration for bus and ferry transport in Akershus, Norway from 1973 to 2007. SL was organised as a limited company owned by the Akershus county municipality, the City of Oslo, and the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications, with a third each. The company planned, marketed and organised the public transport in Akershus but did not operate any buses or ferries. Instead, it issued contracts to operating companies based on public service obligations (OPS).
Sørlandsruta AS is a Norwegian bus company that operates in Western Agder. It was founded in 1951 in a merger of 13 companies. The company has about 100 employees and operates on contract with Vest-Agder Kollektivtrafikk with base in Mandal. The most important route is Kristiansand - Mandal - Farsund - Flekkefjord that operates on a half-hour headway. The company is owned by the holding company Torghatten ASA who also owns Widerøe, Bastø Fosen, Norgesbuss, Trønderbilene and many more companies.
Hedmark Trafikk FKF is the public transport administration for bus transport in Hedmark, Norway and owned by the county administration. The company plans, markets and organises the public transport in Hedmark, but does not operate any buses itself. Instead it issues contracts to operating companies based on negotiated contracts.
Moss Airport, Rygge was a minor international airport serving Moss, Oslo and Eastern Norway. It is located in Rygge, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) outside Moss and 60 kilometres (37 mi) outside Oslo. It also served as a regional airport for Østfold county and owned and was operated by the private company Rygge Sivile Lufthavn AS.
Ruter AS is the public transport authority for Oslo and Akershus counties in Norway. Formally a limited company – 60% of its shares are owned by the Oslo county municipality and 40% by that of Viken – it is responsible for the administration, funding, and marketing of public transport in the two counties, including buses, the Oslo Metro, Oslo Trams, and ferry services. Ruter also holds agreements with Entur concerning the regulation of fares on local and regional train services operated within the two counties.
Nationaltheatret is an underground metro station and tram stop serving Vika and the city center of Oslo, Norway. It is located on the Common Tunnel of the Oslo Metro and on the Briskeby Line of the Oslo Tramway. Also located at the same place is Nationaltheatret Station of the Drammen Line. The station is served by all five lines of the metro, and lines 11 and 13 of the tramway. In addition, several bus services call at the station. It is named for the National Theatre located nearby.
Torp Station, also known as Sandefjord Airport Station, is on the Vestfold Line in Sandefjord, Norway. It is served with regional trains operated by Vy. Located close to Sandefjord Airport, Torp, the station is served by a free four-minute shuttle bus service from the station to the airport. The trains operate northwards via towns in Vestfold to Drammen and Oslo and onwards via Oslo Airport, Gardermoen to towns in Hedmark and Oppland. Southwards, the trains serve Sandefjord, Larvik and Grenland.
