Synthemis is a genus of dragonflies in the family Synthemistidae. [2] Species of Synthemis are medium-sized, slender, black and yellow dragonflies. [3]
The genus includes these species: [4]
Ceriagrion is a genus of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae. Species of Ceriagrion are small to medium size, generally brightly coloured damselflies. They are found across the Old World, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Hemicordulia is a genus of dragonfly in family Corduliidae. It occurs in Africa, southern Asia, Australasia and Pacific Islands such as the Bonin Islands, Fiji and French Polynesia. Species of Hemicordulia are small to medium-sized dragonflies, coloured black or metallic, with yellow.
Ischnura is a genus of damselflies known as forktails in the family Coenagrionidae. Forktails are distributed worldwide, including various oceanic islands. The males have a forked projection at the tip of the abdomen which gives the group their common name.
Macromia is a genus of large dragonflies in the family Macromiidae. They are commonly known as river cruisers from their habit of cruising long distances along river banks. Most species of Macromia occur in the tropical Australasian region, with one species being found in Europe , and a few species occurring in North America.
Pseudagrion is the largest genus of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae, with over 140 species. Its range includes most of Africa, much of Asia, and Australia. Africa holds most of the diversity with almost 100 species. It has occupied most of the freshwater habitats in its range, and dominates damselfly communities in habitats as different as desert pools, equatorial rainforests and montane streams.
Teinobasis is a genus of damselflies in the family Coenagrionidae. Species occur in south-eastern Asia, Indonesia, Solomon Islands and Micronesia; one species, Teinobasis rufithorax, is found in Australia.
Tramea is a genus of dragonflies in the family Libellulidae, the skimmers and perchers. Species of Tramea are found in tropical and subtropical regions around the globe. They typically have colored bases to their otherwise translucent hindwings. In particular when they fly, this creates the impression of their carrying bags at the start of their abdomens. They are known commonly as saddlebags or saddlebags gliders.
Synthemiopsis gomphomacromioides, also known as the Tasmanian spotwing, is a species of dragonfly from southern and north-western Tasmania, Australia. It is the only species in the genus Synthemiopsis and has also been placed in its own tribe, Synthemiopsini. R. J. Tillyard, who first described it, considered it intermediate between the Australian genus Synthemis and the Chilean Gomphomacromia. He had material from swamps around Cradle Mountain, at about 4,000 feet (1,200 m) altitude, and from Flowerdale Creek near Wynyard. Synthemiopsis gomphomacromioides flies rapidly over the swamps and often sits on reeds. It occurs together with Synthemis tasmanica, a similar but duller-coloured species.
Eusynthemis is a genus of dragonflies in the family Synthemistidae. They are commonly known as tigertails. Species of this genus are found mostly in Australia with one species, Eusynthemis frontalis, found in the Solomon Islands.
Choristhemis is a genus of small dragonflies in the family Synthemistidae found in eastern Australia. They are small to medium-sized slender dragonflies with dark colouring and light markings and a relatively weak flight.
Synthemis eustalacta is a species of dragonfly in the family Synthemistidae, known as the swamp tigertail. It is found in south-eastern Australia, where it inhabits streams and rivers. It is a slender, medium-sized dragonfly with black and yellow markings.
Synthemis tasmanica is a species of dragonfly in the family Synthemistidae, known as the Tasmanian swamp tigertail. It is found in Tasmania, Australia, where it inhabits seepages and bogs. It is a slender, medium-sized dragonfly with black and yellow markings.
Archaeosynthemis leachii is a species of dragonfly of the family Synthemistidae, known as the twinspot tigertail. It is a medium-sized dragonfly with black and yellow markings. It inhabits streams, seepages and swamps in south-western Australia.
Archaeosynthemis occidentalis is a species of dragonfly of the family Synthemistidae, known as the western brown tigertail. It is a medium-sized dragonfly with reddish-brown and yellow markings. It is endemic to south-western Australia where it inhabits boggy creeks and swamps.
Archaeosynthemis orientalis is a species of dragonfly of the family Synthemistidae, commonly known as the eastern brown tigertail. It is a medium-sized dragonfly with reddish-brown and yellow markings. It inhabits boggy creeks and swamps in eastern Australia
Eusynthemis brevistyla is a species of dragonfly of the family Synthemistidae, known as a small tigertail. It is a medium-sized dragonfly with black and yellow markings. It inhabits streams in south-eastern Australia
Eusynthemis guttata is a species of dragonfly of the family Synthemistidae, known as the southern tigertail. It is a medium-sized dragonfly with black and yellow markings. It inhabits alpine streams in south-eastern Australia
Parasynthemis regina is a species of dragonfly in the family Synthemistidae, known as the royal tigertail. It is a medium to large and slender dragonfly with a long body and black and yellow markings. It inhabits stagnant pools and swamps in eastern Australia
Austroagrion is a genus of damselflies belonging to the family Coenagrionidae. Species of Austroagrion are small damselflies; males are black with blue or green markings while females are paler. Austroagrion occurs in Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Australia.
