Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) is a public university located in the coastal city of Mombasa. [1] [2] It is amongst the oldest institution of higher learning in Kenya. It is one of the National Polytechnics recently elevated to a fully fledged University in Kenya. It was awarded its charter in 2013 by-then president Mwai Kibaki. [3] [4] [5]

TUM history

TUM can be traced back to the late 1940s when Sir Philip Mitchell, Aga Khan III, the Sultan of Zanzibar, and Secretary of State for the colonies, Sir Bernard Reilly started the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME). [18] After its inception, MIOME started providing technical education to Muslim students of East Africa. In May 1951, MIOME enrolled its first batch of students to undergo a technical education programme which placed special emphasis on Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Seamanship and Navigation, and Woodwork. [19]

In 1966 MIOME become Mombasa Technical Institute (MTI) and started to admit all people from different walks of life regardless of religion or race. [20]

In the year 1976, MTI became Mombasa Polytechnic. Mombasa Polytechnic continued to develop more market driven programs, anchored on the five established Departments of Business Studies, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Building and Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Sciences. [21] On 23 August 2007, through a Legal Notice Mombasa Polytechnic was elevated to a University College thus the name Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC). [22]

In 2013 after being elevated to a fully fledged University Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC) became Technical University of Mombasa (TUM). TUM has opened two strategic satellite Campuses in Kwale and Lamu County. [23] [24]

Kilindini Harbour is a large, natural deep-water inlet extending inland from Mombasa, Kenya. It is 25–30 fathoms (46–55 m) at its deepest center, although the controlling depth is the outer channel in the port approaches with a dredged depth of 17.5 m (57 ft). It serves as the harbour for Mombasa, with a hinterland extending to Uganda. Kilindini Harbour is the main part of the Port of Mombasa, the only international seaport in Kenya and the biggest port in east Africa. It is managed by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA). Apart from cargo handling, Mombasa is frequented by cruise ships.

The university is named after Masinde Muliro, a Kenyan politician who helped found the institution. It has approximately 25,000 students across its branches: Main Campus and its two satellite campuses, Webuye Campus and Bungoma Campus

Pwani University is a public university in the Kilifi County in the coastal region of Kenya, located 60 km north of Mombasa in the resort town of Kilifi, within the larger Kilifi County. Prior to the award of a charter, the university was a constituent college of Kenyatta University. Paramount Chief Kinyanjui Technical Institute (PCKTTI) is a collegiate public, technical institute in Nairobi Kenya. PC Kinyanjui was founded in 1979 with a total of 1,500 students. The vision of starting the school was established by Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of the republic of Kenya. PC Kinyanjui was then upgraded to a technical collegiate institution in 1987 and offers a variety of courses including Engineering education, Business education, Hospitality, ICT. Mrs. Hilda Omwoyo Chief Principal of the institution. PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute is accredited by TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) as a technical training institution.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kenya Technical Trainers College</span> Institution of higher learning

Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) is an institution of higher learning situated in Nairobi, Kenya. It provides Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Kenya Technical Trainers College has since 2020, started training of trainers only and transferred all other students to different colleges around. The Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC) was renamed in 2022 to Kenya School of TVET and got a higher mandate to provide Continuous Professional Development for TVET institutions.
