China's Zheng Qinwen defeated Croatia's Donna Vekić in the final, 6–2, 6–3 to win the gold medal in women's singles tennis at the 2024 Summer Olympics. It was China's first victory in the women's singles, the country's first gold medal in Olympic tennis since the women's doubles in 2004, the first singles gold medal for an Asian country in Olympic tennis, and also the first women's singles medal for Croatia. [1] [2] [3] Zheng and Vekic each saved a match point en route to the championship match. [4] In the bronze medal match, Poland's Iga Świątek defeated Slovakia's Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, 6–2, 6–1. [5] It was Poland's first Olympic medal in tennis. [6] Ranked No. 67, Schmiedlová became the lowest ranked semifinalist since tennis returned to the Olympics in 1988 and the first Slovak woman to reach that stage. [7] [8]
The women's singles tennis event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place from 27 July to 3 August 2024 at the Stade Roland Garros, in Paris, France. [9] There were 64 players from 28 nations. [10]
Belinda Bencic was the reigning gold medalist from 2021, but was on maternity leave. [11] The reigning silver medalist, Markéta Vondroušová, also withdrew due to injury. [12] Bronze medalist Elina Svitolina was the only defending medalist, but lost to Barbora Krejčíková in the third round. [13]
This tournament marked the final professional appearance of former world No. 1, 2016 silver medalist, and three-time major champion Angelique Kerber. She lost in the quarterfinals to Zheng. [14] [15] [16]
Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter up to four players. Nations are limited to four players in the event since the 2000 Games. Qualification for the women's singles is primarily through the WTA ranking list. There are 64 quota places available for women's singles. [10]
The competition is a single-elimination tournament with a bronze medal match. Matches are best-of-3 sets. A tiebreak is played in all sets reaching 6–6, including the last set of a match. [17]

Kateřina Siniaková is a Czech professional tennis player. She is the current world No. 1 in doubles. She also has a best singles ranking of No. 27 by the WTA, achieved in June 2024.
Jasmine Paolini is an Italian professional tennis player. She has been ranked as high as world No. 4, tying the record for the highest-ranked Italian singles player with Francesca Schiavone in the WTA rankings. Paolini is a three-time major finalist, contesting the singles and doubles finals of the 2024 French Open and the singles final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Paolini has won two singles and six doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including a WTA 1000 singles title at the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships, two WTA 1000 doubles titles, and an Olympic gold medal in doubles, partnering Sara Errani. She is the current Italian No. 1. Paolini was part of the Italian squad which won the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup, winning also the ITF best player title: the Heart Award.
Switzerland's Belinda Bencic defeated the Czech Republic's Markéta Vondroušová in the final, 7–5, 2–6, 6–3, to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was Switzerland's first victory in the women's singles. In the bronze medal match, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina defeated Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, 1–6, 7–6(7–5), 6–4. It was Ukraine's first Olympic tennis medal.
Iga Świątek defeated Sofia Kenin in the final, 6–4, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2020 French Open.
Qinwen Zheng is a Chinese professional tennis player. She won the gold medal in women's singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating world No. 1 Iga Swiatek en route to becoming the first Asian tennis player to win an Olympic gold in singles. She reached a career-high WTA ranking of No. 5 on 11 November 2024, and is only the second Chinese player to reach the top 10 after Li Na.
Iga Świątek defeated Coco Gauff in the final, 6–1, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 French Open. It was her second French Open title and second major title overall. She dropped just one set en route, in the fourth round to Zheng Qinwen. With the win, Świątek extended her winning streak to 35 matches, equaling Venus Williams' tally from the 2000 season. Świątek also became the youngest winner of multiple majors since Maria Sharapova in 2006.
The 2022 Iga Świątek tennis season officially began on 3 January 2022 as the start of the 2022 WTA Tour. Iga Świątek entered the season as world number 9. The season saw the Polish player become the twenty-eighth world number 1 player in singles. A 37-match win streak was accumulated during the season, the longest in the twenty-first century.
Ons Jabeur defeated Jessica Pegula in the final, 7–5, 0–6, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 Madrid Open. It was her first WTA 1000 title, and she became the first Arab and African woman to win a WTA 1000 title.
Iga Świątek defeated Ons Jabeur in the final, 6–2, 7–6(7–5) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 US Open. It was her first US Open title, third major title overall and second of the season, making Świątek the first player since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win multiple majors in a season. Świątek became the first Polish woman in the Open Era to reach the US Open quarterfinals and beyond. Świątek also became the youngest woman to win three majors since Maria Sharapova in 2008.
Iga Świątek defeated Donna Vekić in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 San Diego Open. It was her eighth title of the 2022 season. By winning the title, Świątek became the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win more than 10,000 ranking points in a single season.

It was her second Australian Open title and second major singles title overall. Sabalenka did not lose a set during the tournament, and lost only 31 games in total. Sabalenka became the first player to defend the title since Victoria Azarenka in 2013.

Iga Świątek defeated Maria Sakkari in the final, 6–4, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2024 Indian Wells Open. It was her eighth WTA 1000 and 19th career WTA Tour title, and she did not lose a set en route. Świątek became the first woman to win multiple titles at Indian Wells since Victoria Azarenka in 2016, and just the tenth woman to do so overall. She was the first player since Maria Sharapova in 2013 to win the title without dropping a set, and lost just 21 games throughout the entire tournament; this was the fewest since Steffi Graf lost 16 games in 1994. The final was a rematch of the 2022 final, which Świątek also won.

Barbora Krejčíková defeated Jasmine Paolini in the final, 6–2, 2–6, 6–4 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first Wimbledon singles title and second major singles title overall.

Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula in the final, 7–5, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2024 US Open. It was her third major singles title. Sabalenka was the first Belarusian to win the singles title, and the fifth player to win both hardcourt majors in the same calendar year, after Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Angelique Kerber. Sabalenka dropped only one set en route to the title, against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round.
