"The Devil Beneath My Feet" is a song by American rock band Marilyn Manson. It was released as the second promotional single from the band's ninth studio album, The Pale Emperor (2015).
"The Devil Beneath My Feet" was first released on January 15, 2015 as the seventh track on the band's ninth studio album, The Pale Emperor. [2] Editions of the album sold at Walmart stores in the US feature a heavily censored version of the track. Manson would go on to criticize the store and its gun sales policy, categorizing Walmart in an Australian interview as "that store in America which sells guns to kids but won't sell R-rated lyrics." Manson went on to joke that he might "do a signing at a Walmart store where I just sign guns, and you get a free record with it when you buy a gun." [3]
In October 2015, promotional copies of the song were issued to French radio stations, where the song was to be released as an airplay-only single. Promotion was scheduled to coincide with the band's performance at Le Zénith in Paris on November 16, 2015. However, following the Parisian terrorist attacks on November 13 and authorities subsequently forcing the closure of the venue, [4] the release of the single and all promotional activity were canceled. A planned December 6 release date did proceed as planned in the UK, however, where it was serviced to radio stations as the third single taken from the album. [5] [6] [7]
"The Devil Beneath My Feet" is an uptempo rock song [8] which runs for a duration of four minutes and 16 seconds. [9] Incorporating elements of glam rock and psychedelia, the track has been compared to some of the material found on the band's 1998 album, Mechanical Animals . [10] The song is relatively sparse, [11] beginning with an unaccompanied drum track on the intro, which is coupled in the verse with a prominently featured bassline. [12] The track is then augmented in the chorus by the inclusion of psychedelic-influenced electric guitar lines. [10] According to Ultimate Guitar, the song is written in common time with a moderately fast tempo of 127 beats per minute. The bassline in the verse is composed of two repetitions of a basic G–D–A–E sequence, while the electric guitar in the chorus has a progression of Em–B–G–D–A–E. [13]
Lyrically, the song was initially inspired by a text message Manson sent to then-girlfriend Lindsay Usich, which read "Don't bring your black heart to bed/ When I wake up, you best be gone or you better be dead." [14] The song would go on to contain numerous metaphors and references to theology [15] [16] and mathematics, specifically Young's inequality, with the lyric "It's better to be blamed for robbing Peter than guilty for paying Paul." Terry Bezer from Classic Rock described the latter as "one of the coolest lyrics in Manson's arsenal." [10]
The song garnered generally positive reviews from music critics. In his review of the album for Rolling Stone , Jon Dolan called it "one of the album's best songs", and said that it sounds "like a beach party on the River Styx." [17] Dave Simpson of Pure M magazine said that the song takes the album in a "different direction", suggesting it was "more mellow" when compared to other tracks found on The Pale Emperor. He praised its "hushed vocals and reticent yet striking guitars." [18] Dean Brown of The Quietus called the song "brilliant in its simplicity", [11] while Terry Bezer from Classic Rock was similarly complimentary, saying that the song has "an oddly Mechanical Animals feel to it, those guitar lines exploding with excess and elegantly wasted gasconade." Marilyn Manson is an American rock band formed by namesake lead singer Marilyn Manson and guitarist Daisy Berkowitz in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989. Originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, they gained a local cult following in South Florida in the early 1990s with their theatrical live performances. In 1993, they were the first act signed to Trent Reznor's Nothing Records label. Until 1996, the name of each member was created by combining the first name of a female sex symbol and the last name of a serial killer, for example Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. Their lineup has changed between many of their album releases; the eponymous lead singer is the only remaining original member.
Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) is the fourth studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson. It was released on November 11, 2000, by Nothing and Interscope Records. A rock opera concept album, it is the final installment of a triptych that also included Antichrist Superstar (1996), and marked a return to the industrial metal style of the band's earlier work, after the glam rock-influenced production of Mechanical Animals (1998). After its release, the band's eponymous vocalist said that the overarching story within the trilogy is presented in reverse chronological order: Holy Wood, therefore, begins the narrative.
Jeordie Osbourne White, better known Twiggy Ramirez or simply Twiggy, is an American musician, mostly known as the former bassist and guitarist of the rock band Marilyn Manson. Previously, he was the bassist for A Perfect Circle and a touring member of Nine Inch Nails, and is currently the vocalist for Goon Moon. He left Marilyn Manson in 2002, later rejoined the band in 2008, and was dismissed in 2017. He has been a principal songwriter for the band and has also contributed to some of the Desert Sessions recordings. He also hosted the Hour of Goon podcast with fellow musician Fred Sablan, on the Starburns Audio network.

It was recorded in a rented home studio in Hollywood by lead vocalist Marilyn Manson and guitarist and bassist Tim Sköld, and was produced by Manson and Sköld. It was the band's first album not to be recorded as a five-piece, as John 5 departed from the group in 2004. Instead of replacing 5, Tim Sköld remained with bass and played guitar, and the band continued as a four-piece. Manson has stated that he sang most of the album lying down on the studio floor with his hands cupping the studio microphone, resulting in a very distinctive vocal sound. Of Sköld's compositions, a further two are said to have been turned into fully-fledged songs with lyrics, music and vocals completed but were not put onto album for fear of making it overwrought.
