The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection (originally styled as The Fashion Show) is an American reality television series which premiered on May 7, 2009, on the Bravo cable network. The show focuses on fashion design and featured hosts fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi and supermodel Iman. The contestants competed against each other to create the best clothes and were restricted in time, materials, and theme, with the resulting designs judged and one or more designers eliminated each week. [1] The show was originally co-hosted by singer Kelly Rowland, however, she was replaced by Iman in Season 2. [2]

Reality television genre of television programming that documents unscripted situations and actual occurrences

Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents supposedly unscripted real-life situations, and often features an otherwise unknown cast of individuals who are typically not professional actors. Reality television exploded as a phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global success of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother. These shows and a number of others became global franchises, spawning local versions in dozens of countries. The genre has various standard tropes, including "confessionals", or interview segments, used by cast members to express their thoughts, which often double as the shows' narration. In competition-based reality shows, there are other common elements, such as one participant being eliminated per episode, a panel of judges, and the concept of immunity from elimination.

Fashion design art of the application of design and aesthetics to clothing and accessories

Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. It is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories such as bracelets and necklaces. Because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, designers must at times anticipate changes to consumer tastes.

Isaac Mizrahi Fashion designer, television personality

Isaac Mizrahi is an American fashion designer, TV presenter, and Chief Designer of the Isaac Mizrahi brand for Xcel Brands. Based in New York City, he is best known for his eponymous fashion lines. Mizrahi currently serves as a judge on Project Runway: All Stars.

It replaced Bravo's first fashion-competition TV show Project Runway, following its move, accompanied by no small amount of controversy, to Lifetime. Internationally the show was broadcast on Dutch television RTL 5 [3] and was broadcast on British Pay-TV channel Really. [4] Bravo made no move to renew the show after the second season ended 25 January 2011.

Project Runway is an American reality television series that focuses on fashion design. The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are restricted by time, materials and theme. Their designs are judged by a panel, and one or more designers are typically eliminated from the show each week. During each season, contestants are progressively eliminated until only a few contestants remain. These finalists prepare a complete fashion collection for New York Fashion Week, which determines the winner.

Lifetime (TV network) American cable and satellite television

Lifetime is an American pay television channel that is part of Lifetime Entertainment Services, a subsidiary of A&E Networks, which is jointly owned by the Hearst Communications and The Walt Disney Company. It features programming that is geared toward women or features women in lead roles. As of January 2016, it is received by 93.8 million households in America.

Format

Season One

Season One featured Kelly Rowland and Isaac Mizrahi as hosts. The hosts were also judges and were joined by Fern Mallis and Laura Brown in the judging panel.

Kelly Rowland American singer, songwriter, actress

Kelendria Trene Rowland is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. Rowland rose to fame in the late 1990s as a member of Destiny's Child, one of the world's best-selling girl groups of all time. During their hiatus, Rowland released her debut solo album Simply Deep (2002), which sold 2.5 million copies worldwide and included the number-one single "Dilemma" with Nelly, as well as the UK top-ten singles "Stole" and "Can't Nobody". Rowland also ventured into acting, with guest appearances in television shows and starring roles in successful films, Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and The Seat Filler (2005).

Fern Mallis American fashion executive

Fern Mallis was the executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) from 1991–2001, and created 7th on Sixth productions or New York Fashion Week as it is known today. She was also senior vice president of IMG Fashion from 2001 to 2010. Mallis is currently president of her own international fashion and design consultancy, Fern Mallis LLC. She received her BFA from University at Buffalo.

Laura Brown is the Editor in Chief of InStyle Magazine and former Features/Special Projects and Executive Director of Harper's Bazaar magazine. She graduated from Charles Sturt University, where she received her B.A. in arts and communications.

Fifteen designers competed to win $125,000 and have their fashions sold in retail. America chose the winner as these designers were presented with challenges that tested their skill. [5]

Season Two

New host Iman (who had previously hosted the Canadian edition of Project Runway), returning host Isaac Mizrahi (who would go on to judge Project Runway's All-Star season), and returning judge Laura Brown of Harper's Bazaar gathered together as the second season introduced a new format. The contestants were split up into two fashion "houses." Each fashion house was expected to assemble a cohesive fashion show for each episode, from the ground up, including everything from the lighting, music, the set, and of course the fashions.

Iman (model) supermodel and entrepreneur

Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid, mononymously known as Iman, is a Somali fashion model, actress and entrepreneur. She is noted for her philanthropic work. She is the widow of English rock musician David Bowie, whom she married in 1992.

Harpers Bazaar magazine

Harper's Bazaar is an American women's fashion magazine, first published in 1867. Harper's Bazaar is published by Hearst and considers itself to be the style resource for "women who are the first to buy the best, from casual to couture". Aimed at what it calls "discerning ladies", Bazaar is published monthly.

Simply called The Fashion Show during the show's first season, [6] the second season restyled the title to The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection.

Season 2 premiered on November 9 at 10pm/9pm Central, and featured 12 designers competing to create the ultimate collection as well as the chance to win $125,000 provided by TRESemme Professional Hair Care. [7]

In one episode, Calvin Tran declared about having to work with other contestants, "Oh, here go hell come!" It became widely ridiculed on The Soup.
