The Mall of Monroe, formerly known as Frenchtown Square Mall, is an enclosed shopping mall in Frenchtown Charter Township in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located just north of the city of Monroe along North Monroe Street (M-125). Opened in 1988, the mall features more than thirty tenants and a church. The mall is managed by Cafaro Company of Youngstown, Ohio. The mall's anchor stores are Planet Fitness, Phoenix Theatres, and Domka Outdoors. There are 4 vacant anchor stores that were once Target, Sears, and Pat Catan's.

Frenchtown Square Mall opened in 1988 on M-125 (Monroe Street) north of Monroe, in Frenchtown Charter Township. Its original anchor stores included the first Phar-Mor discount pharmacy in Michigan, [2] as well as JCPenney, Sears, Hills, and Elder-Beerman. Hills closed in 1993 [3] and was replaced with Target, while the closure of Phar-Mor in 1995 made way for an Elder-Beerman home store, [4] as well as an OfficeMax which did not open out into the mall. Old Navy was eventually added as well.

OfficeMax closed in the early 2000s. JCPenney closed in 2004 and was replaced two years later by Steve & Barry's. The mall's Regal Cinemas movie theater complex was closed in August 2007, but re-opened three months later under the management of Phoenix Theatres. [5] Steve & Barry's closed in late 2008, [6] as did Old Navy. Sears announced the closure of the Mall of Monroe store in late 2011. [7]

Cafaro announced $2 million renovation plans for the mall in 2009. [8] Among the renovation plans, the former Old Navy was replaced with a clothing store called Wear District, and the mall was renamed The Mall of Monroe. [9] Also, both Elder-Beerman stores were re-branded as Carson's. An expo center opened in 2013, [10] replacing the former JCPenney/Steve & Barry's. Planet Fitness replaced the vacant OfficeMax in 2014. [11] The expo center was closed in 2014 and replaced with a Pat Catan's craft store, which moved from an existing location in Monroe. [12] Target announced in late 2014 that it would close the Mall of Monroe store in early 2015. [13] In late 2015, Family & Friends Funland opened in the former Old Navy. In 2016, Phoenix Theatres added 4 screens, eliminating the food court. In 2018, both Carson's stores closed as part of a chainwide liquidation. In 2019, Monroe City Church opened in the former Carson's Home Store. [14] In addition, Pat Catan's closed in September 2019 with no plans to reopen as a Michael's. [15] In 2019, River Raisin Crossfit opened in a space near the former Target previously occupied by Dunham's Sports and rue21, and in 2020, Leviathan, a local marketing company, will occupy the spaces between the former Target and Pat Catan's. In 2021 the former Target location was sold to Richmond Main LLC which will use the building for an auto parts business. [17]

Frenchtown Square Partnership v. Lemstone, Inc.

In 2003, the mall partnership sued Lemstone Books, a Christian bookstore chain, which had closed its store at the mall six months before the termination of its lease. In those six months, the chain did not pay rent. Lemstone had also claimed that another gift store in the mall had caused declining sales at the Frenchtown Square store. [18]

Meadowbrook Mall is a regional shopping mall in Bridgeport, West Virginia. It was built in late 1982 by the Cafaro Company of Youngstown, Ohio. The original architecture and engineering was done by the Keeva J. Kekst company. The mall includes two department stores, JCPenney and Target, with a third anchor on the way as Boscov's is opening in 2023. Former anchors include Elder-Beerman, Ames, Murphy's Mart, Stone & Thomas, The Bon-Ton, Sears, and Montgomery Ward. Marshalls was added in 2008. ULTA Beauty opened here in 2015. The mall has a gross leasable area of 849,206 square feet (78,894 m2) and 109 stores, classifying it as super-regional according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. In 2023, Boscov's announced that a store will open at the mall in the later part of the year, replacing the former Sears and nearby mall stores. This will be Boscov's 50th store and first location in West Virginia.

It was opened in 1978 and was developed by the Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Company, which continues to own and manage it. The mall currently has four open anchor stores which are Boscov's, Dunham's Sports, Marshalls, and Michaels. It contains more than 100 stores and services. The mall currently has two vacant anchor stores which were once Macy's and Sears.

Lima Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in American Township, Ohio. It is currently anchored by JCPenney with three vacant anchors last occupied by Elder-Beerman, Macy's, and Sears. The center is owned by Washington Prime Group, who took ownership after Simon Property Group spun off the property into a separate company, Washington Prime Group.

The Orchards Mall is an enclosed shopping mall near Benton Harbor, Michigan. Opened in 1979, the mall originally featured Sears and JCPenney as its anchor stores, with Elder-Beerman being added in the 1990s. All three anchors have vacated in the 2010s, as has much of the mall's interior. The last two remaining traditional retail stores are Doctor Zzzz'z Mattress Center and Open Box Outlet, as well as the post office. The mall is owned by Durga LLC.

Muncie Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Muncie, Indiana. Opened in 1970, it was developed by Melvin Simon & Associates, now known as Simon Property Group. The mall's original anchor stores were W. T. Grant, Britt's, Sears, and Ball Stores. In 2020 the mall had no anchor stores, although it continued to have over 30 inline tenants. Its anchor stores as they closed were JCPenney, Macy's, Carson's, and Sears. In 2021 the former Macy's building was bought by a discount store called Buyers Market. The mall is owned and managed by the Woodmont Company.

Village Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Danville, Illinois in the United States. Opened in 1975, the mall's anchor stores are County Market, Pet Supplies Plus, Dunham's Sports, Ross Dress for Less, Citi Trends, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Burlington, Shoe Sensation, Slumberland Furniture, and AMC Theatres. There are 2 vacant anchor store that were once Carson's and Sears. It is managed by T Danville, a division of Tabani Group.
