Novi Town Center is an open-air shopping center located at Novi Road and Grand River in Novi, Michigan, USA, in Metro Detroit. [1] Owned by CBRE, [2] the center is on Interstate 96, with the Twelve Oaks Mall on the other side of the road. [3]

History

Groundbreaking occurred in 1986 and opening occurred in 1987. Patricia Karevich, the mayor of Novi at the time, stated that the opening was the beginning of a downtown for the city. [1] Barbara G. Louie, author of No. VI on the Trail: A History of Novi, Michigan for the Novi Historical Commission, wrote that as a result of the development, "the focal point was drawn again to what was once Novi's main business district." [4]

Trammell Crow developed the 485,000-square-foot (45,100 m2) commercial section of the mall along with the Lake Pointe Corporate Center. [5] The commercial and business centers took a 150-acre (61 ha) plot of land. [6] This was one of the Trammell Crow company's two major projects in Michigan at the time. [7]

Historically the complex had an eight-screen movie theater. It was managed by the chain Goodrich until the management was given to an Indian couple on December 1, 2005. The couple, Sonali and Rakesh Gangwani, began screening Bollywood and other Indian films on a daily basis there. [8]

The center experienced financial difficulties in a period until 2011 due to the closure of Borders, CompUSA, and Mervyn's. [3] In 2010 its owner at the time, the Chicago firm General Growth Properties, was in Chapter 7 bankruptcy. [9]

Wal-Mart announced that it was considering opening a store on the site of the former Mervyn's at the center. [9] The theater and several other businesses closed in 2010 as part of the redevelopment of Novi Town Center related to the Wal-Mart, [10] and the theater did not reopen. [3] The theater was not a part of the plans for expansion, and because of that, the theater did not pay any rent during its final three years of operation. [2]

In 2011 the Novi City Council voted 5–2 to give a special land-use permit to Wal-Mart and 6–1 to a preliminary site plan approval to Wal-Mart; these votes allowed the development of the store to proceed. [11] The Wal-Mart opened in 2012, making it the 86th superstore in Michigan. [12] The Wal-Mart store, on a 12.8-acre (5.2 ha) lot, takes up 152,888 square feet (14,203.8 m2) of space. [3] Greta Guest of the Detroit Free Press stated that new retailers planned to open as the Wal-Mart was developed. [3]

The Mall at Partridge Creek is an open-air shopping mall in Clinton Township, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, United States. Under construction since 2005, the mall opened to the public on October 18, 2007, along with Parisian, which was the mall's only anchor at the time.

Livonia Marketplace is an open-air shopping mall in the Detroit suburb of Livonia, Michigan. Opened in 2010, the center is anchored by Kohl's and Walmart. It occupies the site of the former Livonia Mall, which was an enclosed mall built in 1964. Livonia Mall lost the majority of its tenants in the 2000s, including its previous anchor stores of Crowley's, Sears, Mervyns, and Children's Palace. Opened in 1959 as the outdoor Wonderland Center, it originally featured Montgomery Ward and Federal's as its major anchor stores. A 1980s renovation enclosed the formerly open-air complex and renamed it Wonderland Mall, by which point the anchor stores were Montgomery Ward, Service Merchandise, and Target. This configuration lasted throughout the late 1990s, by which point the closure of both Service Merchandise and Montgomery Ward had led to a number of vacancies. The center reopened officially in 2007.

Harmony House was an American music retailer founded in the Detroit suburb of Hazel Park, Michigan in 1947. The chain once operated 38 stores, primarily within the Metro Detroit area, and employed more than 400 people. Although most of the stores ceased operations in 2002, a location in Berkley remained until 2004 when it was converted to an f.y.e. music store.

A 2013 report by the Global Detroit and Data Driven Detroit stated that of the immigrant ethnic groups to Metro Detroit, the largest segment is the Indian population. As of 2012, the Indian populations of Farmington Hills and Troy are among the twenty largest Indian communities in the United States. As of the 2000 U.S. Census there were 39,527 people with origins from post-partition India in Metro Detroit, making them the largest Asian ethnic group in the Wayne County-Macomb County-Oakland County tri-county area. People of those origins are found throughout Metro Detroit, with the majority being in Oakland County.

Lincoln Park Shopping Center was a shopping center located at the corner of Southfield Road and Dix Highway, mostly in Lincoln Park, Michigan, though a portion containing a former Farmer Jack supermarket and a former Wendy's restaurant lay in neighboring Allen Park. Anchored by Sears and completed by 1957, it was one of the first large-scale strip complexes in the Downriver Detroit suburbs prior to the 1970 opening of Southland Center.
