The Woodies

The Woodies was the nickname given to the tennis doubles pairing of Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, one of the most successful pairings in tennis history.

The Woodies combined Woodforde's left-handed baseline play with Woodbridge's right-handed net skills. They were the ATP Doubles Team of the Year five times, and won 61 ATP doubles titles. The pair won eleven major titles: one French Open, two Australian Opens, two US Opens, and a record six Wimbledons. They also won two Tour Finals titles in 1992 and 1996.

Representing Australia, the Woodies won an Olympic gold medal for Australia at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. They often played for Australia in the Davis Cup, including in three finals. In 1999, they helped Australia to its first Davis Cup victory in 13 years.

The pairing ended in 2000, when Woodforde retired from professional tennis. Woodbridge continued his doubles success with Jonas Björkman, until Björkman ended the partnership in 2004; Woodbridge then partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi of India before retiring himself in 2005.

The Woodies were inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame on Australia Day in January 2010. Their bronzed statues were placed with those of other Australian tennis greats at Melbourne Park, site of the Australian Open.

The Bryan brothers, identical twin brothers Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, are retired American professional doubles tennis players and the most successful duo of all time. They were born on April 29, 1978, with Mike being the elder by two minutes. The Bryans have won multiple Olympic medals, including the gold in 2012 and have won more professional games, matches, tournaments and Grand Slams than any other men's pairing. They held the World No. 1 doubles ranking jointly for 438 weeks, which is longer than anyone else in doubles history, and have also enjoyed that World No. 1 ranking together for a record 139 consecutive weeks. Chile's Fernando González and Nicolás Massú defeated Germany's Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schüttler in the final, 6–2, 4–6, 3–6, 7–6^(9–7), 6–4 to win the gold medal in Men's Doubles tennis at the 2004 Summer Olympics. It was Chile's first ever Olympic gold medal. Massú and González also won gold and bronze, respectively, in the singles competition. Germany won its third medal in four Games in the event. In the bronze medal match, Croatia's Mario Ančić and Ivan Ljubičić defeated India's Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, 7–6^(7–5), 4–6, 16–14. It was Croatia's first medal in men's doubles since 1992.

Julian Knowle is an Austrian former male professional tennis player. Being a born left-hander, Knowle was one of the few on the ATP Tour who played his forehand, backhand, and even volleys double-handed. He was Austria's most successful doubles player in history by reaching world no. 6 in the ATP doubles rankings in January 2008, before being matched by Jürgen Melzer, who reached no. 6 in September 2010, and overtaken by Alexander Peya, who reached no. 3 in August 2013.

Leander Adrian Paes is an Indian former professional tennis player. He is regarded as one of the greatest doubles tennis players of all-time and holds the record for the most doubles wins in the Davis Cup. Paes won eight men's doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. He made a total of 34 Grand Slam finals across men's and mixed doubles in his career which is the joint 2nd highest of all-time among men. He holds a career Grand Slam in men's doubles and mixed doubles making him one of only three men in the Open era to achieve this distinction and won the rare men's/mixed double at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships. Paes was also the 1st pair in Open era history together with Mahesh Bhupathi to reach the men's doubles finals of all 4 Grand Slams in the same calendar year(1999).

Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Daniel Vacek successfully defended their title defeated Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in the final, 7–6^(14–12), 4–6, 6–3 to win the men's doubles title at the French Open.

Jonas Björkman and Byron Black were the defending champions, but Black did not compete this year. Björkman teamed up with Max Mirnyi and lost in the quarterfinals to Sébastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor.
