Thom Burns Racing (also known as Milligan/Burns Racing Team, Burns Racing Team, Burns Motor Sports, Burns Motorsports and Lazier-Burns Racing) was an American auto racing team that competed in the IndyCar Series from 1989 to 2018.
The team was owned by Thomas Burns, an Indianapolis, Indiana-based property developer. [1]
In 1989, the team intended to make their debut at the Indianapolis 500 with Tom Bigelow driving for Milligan/Burns Racing Team. [2] He would drive the No. 66 Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health March 86C-Cosworth DFX. [2]
On the third day of qualifying, Bigelow blew an engine and the team parked the car on Bump Day, when it was determined that Bigelow would not be fast enough to qualify for the field. [2]
For 1990, the team was rebranded as Burns Racing Team and Guido Daccò drove the No. 66 Lola T88/00-Judd V8 at the Indianapolis 500. [3] However, after struggling to reach qualifying speed in practice, Daccò failed to qualify. [2]
Daccò ultimately tied for 29th place in the final standings with one point, although he also drove races for Euromotorsport, Bettenhausen Motorsports and Nu-Tech Motorsports. [4] [5]
In 1991, Burns entered the Indianapolis 500 with two-time 500 winner Gordon Johncock driving the No. 66 Kroger Lola T89/00-Judd AV. [6] However, Dominic Dobson would replace Johncock due to bringing additional sponsorship. [6]
On the morning practice of the second day of qualifying, Dobson lost control of his car in turn four and hit the outer wall. [6] In the crash, Dobson suffered a fractured left thigh bone at the knee, although he could race with a brace. [6] Dobson would eventually qualify for the race in 30th place. [7]
For the race, Coors and Rally's began to sponsor the car. [7] In the race, Dobson made a pit stop on lap 43, while running in 16th place, when it was discovered that the right-rear half shaft was broken. [6] He would ultimately finish 13th with 164 of 200 laps complete, in a race that had only 11 cars running at the finish. [7]
With no points, Dobson tied for 32nd place in the final CART standings. [8]
For 1992, Burns expanded to two cars, each for just Indianapolis: Mark Dismore in the No. 66 Comet Kart Sales Lola T90/00-Buick Indy V6 and Dobson in the No. 68 Tobacco Free America Lola T91/00-Chevrolet Indy V8. [9]
On Bump Day, the final day of qualifying, the two entries made attempts to qualify. [9] Dismore would have his attempt be waived off, so he left for D. B. Mann Motorsports, while Dobson qualified at an average speed of 220.359 miles per hour in 29th place. [9] [10]
In the race, Dobson initially stayed about where he started, as he was in 26th after 10 laps, with two retirements having occurred by that point. [9] [10] By lap 100, with 14 of the 33 starters retired, Dobson was in 14th place, albeit four laps down. [9] [10] Ultimately, Dobson finished seven laps down in 12th place. [10]
With one point, Dobson tied for 34th place in the final standings. [11]
In 1993, the team (now known as Burns Motor Sports) entered Indianapolis with Johnny Parsons in the No. 66 Mortgage Group of America Lola T92/00-Chevrolet Indy V8 A. [12] However, Dobson ended up driving the entry, as a Galmer 92B with sponsorship from Coors Light. [12]
On the third day of qualifying, Dobson had a four-lap average speed of 218.276 miles per hour, which would qualify him in 27th place. [12] [13]
In the race, by lap 40, Dobson was two laps down in 30th. [12] He would lose two more laps by the halfway point. [12] Ultimately, with 193 laps completed, Dobson finished in 23rd place. [13]
Later in the year, Burns helped set-up PacWest Racing. [14]
With no points, Dobson finished 34th in points. [15]
After a three-year hiatus, the newly renamed Burns Motorsports entered Indianapolis, with Jeff Wood driving the No. 66 Lola T92/00-Buick Indy V6. [16] The team would not appear. [17]
In 2016, Burns became a part of Lazier Partners Racing and formed Lazier Burns Racing. [18] There were considerations to field, for Indianapolis, Gabby Chaves, Jay Howard or Katherine Legge, Buddy Lazier remained as the driver. [18] They would enter the No. 4 Dallara DW12-Chevrolet Indy V6. [19]
On the first qualifying day, Lazier posted an average speed of 224.341 miles per hour and, on the second day, his average speed was 222.154 miles per hour, which qualified Lazier in 32nd place. [20] After qualifying, Quiznos became the entry's primary sponsor. [21]
During the parade laps for the race, Lazier made a pit stop, due to having a stuck throttle. [22] Eventually, on lap 47, Lazier joined the race. [23] On lap 150, Lazier lost his left front tire, as he was exiting pit lane. [22] He would retire, due to the issue, and finish in 30th place, with 100 laps complete. [19]
In the championship, Lazier finished 35th with one point. [24]
For 2018, Thom Burns Racing partnered with Dale Coyne Racing to field Conor Daly in the No. 17 United States Air Force Dallara UAK18-Honda V6. [1]
On Bump Day, Daly initially posted an average speed of 222.684 miles per hour. [25] This speed got him bumped by Ed Carpenter. [26] Daly then re-qualified at an average speed of 224.736 miles per hours, which ended up being bumped by Oriol Servià. [25] Afterwards, Daly made a third attempt, which had an average speed of 224.874 miles per hour, which would be good enough to qualify. [25]
In the Pole Day qualifying session, Daly had an average speed of 224.429 miles per hour, which put him in the 33rd (last) starting position. [27]
For the race, Daly would finish in 21st place, one laps down. [28] He would finish 29th in the final standings, with 58 points (Daly also drove for Harding Racing). [29] [30]
Jeff Andretti is a former American professional race car driver. He competed in the Champ Car World Series and was the series' Rookie of the Year in 1991.
Robert Buddy Lazier is an American auto racing driver, best known for winning the 1996 Indianapolis 500 and the 2000 Indy Racing League season championship.
Hemelgarn Racing is an American auto racing team owned by Ron Hemelgarn. The team debuted in 1985, and competed in the CART and Indy Racing League ranks until the team originally shut down in 2010. The team returned to competition in 2015, and currently competes full-time in the USAC Silver Crown Series with driver Justin Grant. Grant won the 2020 championship for the team.
The 63rd 500 Mile International Sweepstakes was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, on Sunday May 27, 1979. Second-year driver Rick Mears took the lead for the final time with 18 laps to go, and won his first of four Indianapolis 500 races. It was also Mears' first of a record six Indy 500 pole positions. Brothers Al and Bobby Unser combined to lead 174 of the 200 laps, but Al dropped out around the midpoint, and Bobby slipped to 5th place at the finish nursing mechanical issues. It was also Roger Penske's second Indy 500 victory as a car owner.
The 64th 500 Mile International Sweepstakes was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 25, 1980. Johnny Rutherford won the pole position, led 118 laps, and won the race by a commanding 29.92 second margin. After failing to finish the race the year before, Jim Hall's radical new Chaparral 2K ground effects chassis was a heavy favorite entering the month, and drove a flawless race. Rutherford, the winner in 1974 and 1976, became the sixth driver to win the Indy 500 three times.
The 84th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 28, 2000. The race was sanctioned by the Indy Racing League, and was part of the 2000 Indy Racing Northern Lights Series season. After four years of an ongoing organizational dispute and "split" in Indy car racing, Chip Ganassi Racing became the first major CART-based team to compete at the race since 1995. The Ganassi team of Jimmy Vasser and Juan Pablo Montoya competed as a one-off entry, and were well received by fans and fellow competitors. Both drivers were quickly up to speed with the IRL regulars, and were expected to be favorites in both qualifying and on race day. Also making a heralded return to Indianapolis was two-time winner Al Unser Jr. who had switched full-time to the IRL in 2000.
The 80th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 26, 1996. This was the first Indy 500 contested as part of the new Indy Racing League, under the overall sanctioning umbrella of USAC. It was the third and final race of the 1996 IRL season. Veteran driver and former AIS champion Buddy Lazier won the race, his first career victory in top-level Indy car competition. Lazier's victory came just over two months after he suffered a broken back in a crash at Phoenix. Lazier's victory marks the last Indy victory for Ford, the second of two all-time victories for Reynard, and was the first victory for Firestone since 1971.
The 78th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 29, 1994. The race was sanctioned by United States Auto Club (USAC), and was included as race number 4 of 16 of the 1994 PPG IndyCar World Series. For the second year in a row, weather was not a factor during the month. Only one practice day was lost to rain, and pole day was only partially halted due to scattered showers. Warm, sunny skies greeted race day.
The 77th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 30, 1993. Emerson Fittipaldi took the lead with 16 laps to go, and won his second career Indy 500 victory. The race was sanctioned by the United States Auto Club (USAC) and was part of the 1993 PPG Indy Car World Series. Several sidebar stories during the month complemented one of the most competitive Indy 500 races in recent years.
The 76th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, on Sunday, May 24, 1992. The race is famous for the fierce battle in the closing laps, as race winner Al Unser Jr. held off second place Scott Goodyear for the victory by 0.043 seconds, the closest finish in Indy history. Unser Jr. became the first second-generation driver to win the Indy 500, following in the footsteps of his father Al Unser Sr. He also became the third member of the famous Unser family to win the race.
The 75th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, on Sunday, May 26, 1991. Rick Mears won from the pole position, becoming the third four-time winner of the Indy 500, joining A. J. Foyt and Al Unser. During time trials, Mears also established an Indy record by winning his sixth career pole position. The month of May for Mears was tumultuous, as he suffered his first ever crash at Indy since arriving as a rookie in 1977. The wreck during a practice run totaled his primary car, and broke a bone in his right foot. Mears kept the injury mostly secret, and later admitted that the pain he experienced during the race was so bad, he had to cross his legs in the car and push the accelerator pedal down with his left foot.
The 74th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Sunday, May 27, 1990. Dutchman Arie Luyendyk took the lead with 32 laps to go, and earned his first-ever victory in championship-level competition. It was the second consecutive year the Indy 500 was won by a foreign-born competitor, the first time that had occurred since 1965–1966. Luyendyk completed the 500 miles at an average speed of 185.981 mph (299.307 km/h), a record that stood for 23 years until 2013. In reference to the long-standing speed record, for many years the 1990 race was often referred to as "The Fastest 500".
The 71st Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, on Sunday May 24, 1987. After dominating practice, qualifying, and most of the race, leader Mario Andretti slowed with mechanical problems with only 23 laps to go. Five laps later, Al Unser Sr. assumed the lead, and won his record-tying fourth Indianapolis 500 victory. At age 47, just days short of his 48th birthday, Unser became the oldest winner of the Indy 500, a record that still stands as of 2024. During the month of May, an unusually high 25 crashes occurred during practice and qualifying, with one driver in particular, Jim Crawford, suffering serious leg injuries.
Dale Coyne Racing (DCR) is an American professional open-wheel racing team that currently competes in the IndyCar Series and Indy NXT. The team was founded in 1984 and is owned by former driver Dale Coyne. From 1995 to 2000, the team was known as Payton-Coyne Racing, reflecting a partnership with Chicago Bears great Walter Payton. After the 1988 season, Coyne stepped out of the cockpit and turned his talents to the tutelage of several up-and-coming drivers. Once known for competing on budgets far smaller than most of their competitors, the team earned its maiden victory after 25 years at Watkins Glen International in July 2009 with Justin Wilson.
Guido Daccò was an Italian race car and motorcycle racer from Limbiate. He began motorcycle racing in 1969 and from 1980 to 1984 he raced in Formula 2. He then drove in the 1985 24 Hours of Le Mans and began racing in Formula 3000. In 1988 he moved to the United States to drive in the Indy Lights series where he placed 10th in series points. In 1989 he made his CART debut for Dale Coyne Racing. Dacco had little success in CART and bounced from team to team until 1992, making 23 starts with a best finish of 12th. He failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in his attempts in 1990 and 1991. He returned to Europe in 1992 to drive two races in German Formula 3 and then retired from racing. He made occasional drives in historic races and managed an FIA GT team.
James D. Davison is an Australian professional racing driver who drives an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 in the Blancpain GT World Challenge America. He has also competed in the NTT IndyCar Series, NASCAR Cup Series, and NASCAR Xfinity Series. He is sometimes also called JD Davison.

The Rahal-Hogan R/H-001, originally known as the Truesports 91C and developed into the Truesports 92C, was a CART racing car used in the early 1990s. It was developed and raced by Truesports between 1991 and 1992 and sold to Rahal-Hogan Racing in 1993, notably failing to qualify for the 1993 Indianapolis 500 with defending series champion Bobby Rahal. The car was also used by customer team Robco, a part-time CART entrant, in 1992. The car started in 43 CART races, scoring no wins before the project was ended.
