Tracy Elizabeth Dahl (born 13 November 1961) is a Canadian coloratura soprano who has performed in opera houses and on concert stages around the world. Alongside her performing career, Dahl teaches voice at the University of Manitoba Desautels Faculty of Music, [1] and conducts masterclasses and workshops across North America. She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her husband and two children. [2]
Born in Winnipeg, [3] Dahl began voice lessons at 12, and seemed destined for a career in musical theatre. [2] In 1979 and 1980, she studied drama and musical theatre at the Banff Centre. After a successful debut as Barbarina in Manitoba Opera's 1982 production of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro , Dahl changed her focus to opera. [2] In 1983, she studied opera at the Banff Centre, and the Banff Academy of Singing in 1984 under the guidance of Mary Morrison and Martin Isepp. In 1985, she participated in San Francisco Opera's Merola Opera Program, and soon began a career in opera. In 1987, Dahl made her European debut at Aix-en-Provence, performing the role of Blondchen in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail . Also in 1987, she made her American opera debut in The Tales of Hoffmann at the San Francisco Opera, singing the role of Olympia opposite Plácido Domingo. [4] In 1991, in the place of an indisposed singer, she sang the role of Adele in Johann Strauss Jr.'s Die Fledermaus at the Metropolitan Opera. [2] She also performed as Florestine in the premiere of John Corigliano's Ghosts of Versailles at the Metropolitan Opera in 1991, and again in 1995. [3]
Dahl has sung in opera houses throughout North America, including the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Colorado Symphony, Portland Opera, and Canadian Opera Company, and has performed over 25 roles. In 2006, she made her La Scala debut as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos . [4] [5]
Dahl has appeared in concert with all the major orchestras across Canada, as well as with the Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. She performed a New Year's Eve gala with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich under David Zinman, and made her United Kingdom debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. [1] Dahl debuted at Carnegie Hall in the world premiere of David Del Tredici's Child Alice in 1986, [4] and performed under the baton of maestro Leonard Slatkin at the Hollywood Bowl. [1]
Dahl made her Australian concert debut in 2011, performing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The following year, she performed for the first time with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in "A Gershwin Tribute". [4]
In 2009, Dahl was awarded the Ruby Baton by Opera Canada for her outstanding achievements on stage. [2] In 2012, she received the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Golden Baton Award for her artistic achievements. [7]
Dame Kiri Jeanette Claire Te Kanawa,, is a New Zealand opera singer. She had a full lyric soprano voice, which has been described as "mellow yet vibrant, warm, ample and unforced". On 1 December 1971 she was recognised internationally when she appeared as the Countess in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House in London.
Kathleen Deanna Battle is an American operatic soprano known for her distinctive vocal range and tone. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Battle initially became known for her work within the concert repertoire through performances with major orchestras during the early and mid-1970s. She made her opera debut in 1975. Battle expanded her repertoire into lyric soprano and coloratura soprano roles during the 1980s and early 1990s, until her eventual dismissal from the Metropolitan Opera in 1994. She later has focused on recording and the concert stage. After a 22-year absence from the Met, Battle performed a concert of spirituals at the Metropolitan Opera House in November 2016, and again in May 2024.
Adele Addison is an American lyric soprano who was a figure in the classical music world during the 1950s and 1960s. Although she did appear in several operas, Addison spent most of her career performing in recital and concert. Her performances spanned a wide array of literature from the Baroque period to contemporary compositions. She is best remembered today as the singing voice for Bess in the 1959 movie, Porgy and Bess. Known for her polished and fluent tone, Addison made a desirable Baroque vocal artist. She can be heard on numerous recordings, of which her Baroque performances are perhaps her best work. Many of her recordings were made with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein.
Manitoba Opera is an opera company in Winnipeg, Manitoba that was founded in 1969. Its first production was a concert version of Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore in 1972. Manitoba Opera is one of several western Canadian opera companies that flourished under the so-called "father of opera in Western Canada," Irving Guttman. He has been instrumental in the development of many young Canadian singers, including Winnipeg native Tracy Dahl (soprano) and Winkler's Phillip Ens (bass). Both have gone on to international careers.

As well, it includes musical styles brought by other ethnic communities from the 19th century and onwards, such as Indian classical music and Chinese classical music. Karen Williams is an American concert and opera soprano. In 1985 she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions; making her stage debut at the Metropolitan Opera later that year as Serena in George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. She sang that role at the Met again in 1989–1990. She has also performed Serena at Symphony Hall, Springfield with the Boston Concert Opera (1986), the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (1998), the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (1999), the Utah Symphony Orchestra (1999), and the Philadelphia Orchestra (2000) among others. In 1986 she made her debut with the Opera Company of Philadelphia as Amelia in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera.

The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (MCO) is a chamber orchestra based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It offers an annual subscription series at Westminster United Church, which regularly features Canada's leading soloists, such as James Ehnes and Measha Brueggergosman, and Marc-André Hamelin. Other core MCO activities include recording, touring, and engaging extensive outreach in remote communities in northern Manitoba. Currently, Anne Manson serves as the MCO's Music Director, Karl Stobbe as its Concertmaster, and Vicki Young as its managing director.

Riki Turofsky is a Canadian concert and opera soprano, broadcaster, and video producer. She has sung leading roles with opera companies in Canada, the United States, and Europe, and has performed on the concert stage with major ensembles throughout North America. In 1978 she expanded her career into broadcasting as a host for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation program Summer Festival. She has since appeared as a host on numerous programs for the CBC and the CTV Television Network. She also owns and operates the company Riki Productions which produces arts related programing for Canadian television.
Camellia Johnson was an American concert and opera singer. She began her career performing works from the mezzo-soprano repertoire, but after encouragement from the staff at the Metropolitan Opera retrained her voice as a soprano. She successfully made that transition after winning the Young Concert Artists competition in 1993. She went on to perform as a leading soprano with orchestras and opera companies internationally.
Heidi Stober is an American operatic soprano who has performed leading roles in major opera houses internationally, including the Dutch National Opera, the Garsington Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, the Municipal Theatre of Santiago, the Semperoper, and the Vienna State Opera. She has been particularly active with the Houston Grand Opera where she has performed in more than a dozen operas since 2004, including the world premieres of Daniel Catán's Salsipuedes: a Tale of Love, War and Anchovies (2004), Mark Adamo's Lysistrata (2005), and Ricky Ian Gordon's The House without a Christmas Tree (2017). She has also performed in more than ten operas with the San Francisco Opera since 2010. Since 2008 she has been a resident artist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin where she has primarily performed roles from the lyric soprano repertoire. Also active as a concert soprano on the international stage, she has performed with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest among other orchestras. She is particularly admired for her interpretations of the works of George Frideric Handel and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
