Tropical Depression Five-E formed out of a weak tropical wave, associated with scattered convection, which formed off the coast of Africa on June 23. [1] The wave was moving towards the west at the rate of 23 mph (37 km/h), due to an area of high pressure located over the north-central Atlantic Ocean leading to a prevailing easterly flow. [2] Some cyclonic turning was noted and convection was on either side of the axis the center of the stormbut was mainly in association with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). [3] The wave remained very close to the intertropical convergence zone for the next several days without any further development. [4]

On June 26, a small burst of moisture in the system was noted in the area of the wave, but no other notable development occurred. [4] On July 2, the wave moved over Central America and produced scattered areas of strong convection off the coast of Honduras. [1] [5] Later in the day, the center of the wave became elongated as determined by a QuikSCAT satellite pass. [6] By the afternoon, the wave developed into an area of low pressure and a tropical cyclone formation alert was issued as the possibility of a tropical cyclone developing within 48 hours was present. [7]

Not long after the alert was issued, deep convection disappeared from the low while located 400  mi (645  km). Convection was anticipated to redeveloped later that night or early the next morning. The low was moving slowly towards the northwest due to a deep trough located over the Gulf of Mexico and a ridge of high pressure located over western Mexico. [8] By the morning of July 3, convection had redeveloped near the low and its forward motion quickly increased to 11 mph (18 km/h). [9] The low remained disorganized for the next two days as it steadily moved towards the northwest. [10]

During the morning of July 5, deep convection rapidly increased and banding features formed despite strong easterly wind shear. [11] The convection persisted into the afternoon and the low was upgraded to Tropical Depression Five-E accordingly. Weak steering currents persisted as the depression moved towards the northwest at 4 to 5 mph (6.4 to 8.0 km/h). [12] Following the storm's upgrade, further development did not occur as the system tracked steadily towards the north-northwest. Early on July 7, the depression made landfall near Lazaro Cardenas with winds of 35 mph (56 km/h). Rapid weakening followed shortly after landfall and the storm dissipated several hours later over the mountains of Mexico. [1]

Preparations and impact

As Tropical Depression Five-E approached Mexico, the country's government released tropical storm watches and warnings for certain parts of the coastline. [1] When the tropical depression formed on July 5, the government issued a tropical storm warning from Acapulco to Zihuatanejo. [13] Other interests in the Pacific Ocean were asked to keep an eye on the developing depression. [14] The morning of July 6, the Mexican government issued a tropical storm watch for Zihuatanejo to Manzanillo. The earlier tropical storm warning remained in effect, [15] for another six hours, when the warning was demoted into a tropical storm watch. [16] On the afternoon of July 6, the government discontinued the tropical storm watch up to Acapulco. [17] The remaining tropical storm watch was discontinued on July 7, after the tropical depression had made landfall and began to weaken. [18] The government's weather center also released thirteen tropical cyclone bulletins and four warnings for personal caution. [19]

The tropical depression produced 5.11 inches (130 mm) of rain in Manzanillo, with other locations also experiencing isolated rainfall. [1] Cerro de Ortega, Colima reported 12.99 inches (330 mm) of rain in a 24-hour period. The community of Ometepec reported 7.88 inches (200 mm). Other locations reported moderate rainfall, ranging around 5–7 inches (130–180 mm). [19] One person was swept away by flood waters, reaching 1 m (3.3 ft) in depth. Heavy rains from the depression resulted in a traffic accident that killed one person and injured two others. [20] In all, damages from the storm amounted to MXN 30 million ($2.2 million). [21]

The 2003 season featured 16 tropical storms between May 19 and October 26; 7 of these became hurricanes, which was then considered an average season. Damage across the basin reached US$129 million, and 23 people were killed by the storms.

The 2000 Pacific hurricane season was an above-average Pacific hurricane season, although most of the storms were weak and short-lived. There were few notable storms this year. Tropical storms Miriam, Norman, and Rosa all made landfall in Mexico with minimal impact. Hurricane Daniel briefly threatened the U.S. state of Hawaii while weakening. Hurricane Carlotta was the strongest storm of the year and the second-strongest June hurricane in recorded history. Carlotta killed 18 people when it sank a freighter. Overall, the season was significantly more active than the previous season, with 19 tropical storms. In addition, six hurricanes developed. Furthermore, there were total of two major hurricanes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Alma</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2008

Tropical Storm Alma of the 2008 Pacific hurricane season was the easternmost forming Pacific tropical cyclone on record. It formed within the monsoon trough just off the coast of Costa Rica on May 29. Initially forecast to remain a weak tropical storm, the cyclone rapidly strengthened and developed an eye, before making landfall on May 29 in Nicaragua, near León, with peak winds of 65 mph (105 km/h). Alma degenerated into a remnant low on May 30, before merging with another approaching tropical wave in the Gulf of Honduras shortly afterward, which became Tropical Storm Arthur on the next day. Alma was the first tropical storm on record to strike the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. In Costa Rica, heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides, killing two and causing $35 million (USD) in damage. Three people were killed in Nicaragua, one from drowning and two others from electrocution. Five others died in Honduras from an aviation accident likely related to the storm and one other was swept away in floodwaters.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Kiko (2007)</span> Pacific tropical cyclone

Tropical Storm Kiko was a strong tropical storm that capsized a boat off the western coast of Mexico, killing at least 15 people. The 15th and final tropical cyclone of the 2007 Pacific hurricane season, Kiko developed out of a tropical wave that formed off the coast of Africa on September 26 and traversed the Atlantic. The wave crossed over Central America and entered the Pacific Ocean on October 8, where it spawned Tropical Depression 15-E on October 15. The depression drifted to the south over the next day before briefly being declared Tropical Storm Kiko. It subsequently weakened into a tropical depression, but later reattained tropical storm intensity. By October 18, Kiko was forecast to make landfall along the western Mexican coastline as a moderate tropical storm. However, the cyclone turned to the west and reached its peak intensity of 70 mph (110 km/h) on October 20. The tropical storm slowly weakened to a remnant low-pressure area by October 24 and completely dissipated on October 27 without making landfall.

Also, there were no additional named storms until July 2, when Tropical Storm Agatha formed, becoming the latest first-named Eastern Pacific tropical storm since Tropical Storm Ava in 1969.

Tropical Storm Beatriz was a short-lived tropical storm that made landfall in the Mexican state of Oaxaca in June 2017. The second named storm of the 2017 Pacific hurricane season, Beatriz developed from a tropical wave which had exited the coast of West Africa on May 18 and crossed Central America, and was designated as Tropical Depression Two-E on May 31. Shortly after being upgraded to a tropical storm, Beatriz made landfall near Puerto Angel, Mexico on the evening of June 1. It subsequently weakened into a tropical depression as it moved ashore, dissipating quickly afterwards.

Conversely, 2021 was the second consecutive season in which no tropical cyclones formed in the Central Pacific.

It officially began on May 15 in the eastern Pacific, and on June 1 in the central Pacific ; both will end on November 30. These dates, adopted by convention, historically describe the period in each year when most tropical cyclogenesis occurs in these regions of the Pacific. There was no tropical cyclone activity in the basin for the first six weeks of the season, making this one of the latest-starting seasons on record. When the first system, Hurricane Adrian, developed on June 27, it became the second-latest forming first named storm in the eastern Pacific in the satellite era, behind only Tropical Storm Agatha in 2016.
