Commonwealth Games appearances (overview)

Tuvalu first participated in the Commonwealth Games in 1998, when a weightlifter attended the games held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. [1] Tuvalu has subsequently sent teams to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

Tuvalu is unranked on the all-time medal tally of the Commonwealth Games, having never won a medal.

History

Tuvalu first participated in the Commonwealth Games in 1998, when a weightlifter attended the games held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. [1]

At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, Tuvalu was represented by two table tennis players - Alan Puga Resture and Teokila Maleko.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, Tuvalu were represented by Alan Puga Resture & Napetari Tioti, participating in table tennis events, and Geoffrey Ludbrook (50m Rifle Prone) and Logona Esau (men's 69 kg combined weightlifting). [2]

At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, Tuvaluan athletes participated in the discus, shot put and weightlifting events. [1] Tuau Lapua Lapua finished in 15th position in the men’s final for weightlifting (62 kg), with a lift of 220 kg. [3] Fakepelu Sileti entered the discus throw and the shot put events and reached 14th position in the qualifying rounds of the men’s shot put, with a distance of 12.62 metres. [3]

Tuvalu sent a team of five to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland comprising Logona Esau, Tuau Lapua Lapua and Kaie Luenita in weightlifting; and Kaimalie Resture and Alan Resture in table tennis. [4]

Tuvalu sent a team of four to the Gold Coast XXI Commonwealth Games in 2018, comprising Karalo Maibuca (men's 100 metres), [5] Imo Fiamalua (men’s javelin throw), [6] Kalton Melton and Tulimanu Vaea (men’s table tennis doubles). [7]

Tuvalu sent a team of five to the Birmingham XXII Commonwealth Games in 2022, comprising Karalo Maibuca (men's 100 metres), Ampex Isaac and Saaga Malosa (men’s beach volleyball), [8] Leatialii Afoa (lightweight boxing) and Fiu Tui (middleweight boxing). [9]

Both track and field athletes achieved national records. Logona Esau led the Tuvaluan squad as the nation's flag bearer in the parade of nations.

Tuvalu sent a small delegation of table tennis players only to the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. 2002 marked Tuvalu's second participation in the Commonwealth Games. The tiny Pacific nation did not win any medals.

Tuvalu competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which was held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its second appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The delegation consisted of three competitors: two short-distance runners, Tavevele Noa and Asenate Manoa, and one weightlifter, Tuau Lapua Lapua. All three qualified for the games through wildcard places because they did not meet the qualification standards. Lapua was the flag bearer for the opening ceremony while Manoa carried it at the closing ceremony. Noa and Manoa failed to advance beyond the preliminary rounds of their events although the latter established a new national record for the women's 100 metres, while Lapua placed 12th in the men's featherweight weightlifting competition.

Gareth Irfon Evans is a Welsh weightlifter. He has competed in the 62 kg and 69 kg weight categories, and was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

Tuau Lapua Lapua is a Tuvaluan weightlifter.

In 2006, Tuvalu satisfied the IOC's criterion of a minimum five national sports federations recognized by their international sports federations, which included basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, boxing and table tennis.

Tuvalu competed at the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa. The country participated in nine sports at the 2019 games. The Tuvaluan team was made up of 98 athletes, including 3 para-athletes: Esekai Vaega, Tanielu Soa, and Ioane Hawaii who received a gold medal in the Table Tennis, Men's Seated Singles division.

Tuvalu competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, which were held from 23 July to 8 August 2021. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their participation marked their fourth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics since their debut at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Tuvaluan delegation consisted of the sprinters Karalo Maibuca and Matie Stanley, both of whom were competing in their first Olympics. Neither Maibuca nor Stanley managed to progress beyond the preliminary rounds of their events, although Maibuca set a Tuvaluan national record of 11.42 seconds in the men's 100 metres.

Manuila Raobu is a Tuvaluan Weightlifter representing Tuvalu at the Commonwealth Games and Pacific Games.
