University of Zenica (Bosnian: Univerzitet u Zenici) is a public university located in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The university was founded in 2000, when faculties in Zenica decided to separate from the University of Sarajevo.

History

The college of metallurgy was established in 1950 and has been transferred to Faculty of Metallurgy in 1961 as an outside faculty of the University of Sarajevo. From there more faculties were added and enrollment increased, until an independent University was created by the Parliament of Zenica-Doboj Canton in 2000. The University is member of the Balkan Universities Network.

The University hosts annual promotion ceremony for all graduate students of both BA and MA study programme. The ceremony is held every October in Arena Zenica.

Central Bosnia is a central subregion of Bosnia, which consists of a core mountainous area with several basins, valleys and mountains. The Bosnia and Herzegovina FA Training Centre is the training ground of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina located in the Crkvičko brdo neighbourhood of Zenica, Zenica-Doboj Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The centre was officially inaugurated on 2 September 2013 by then-president of UEFA, Michel Platini, after the first stage of construction was completed.

The Zenica massacre happened on 19 April 1993, shortly after noon. Several shells fired from the Croatian Defence Council’s positions located in Putićevo village, about 16 km (9.9 mi) west of Zenica, killed 16 and injured over 50 civilians in a large crowd.

Smilja Mučibabić was a Bosnian biologist. She was among the most distinguished biologists in the former Yugoslavia in the 20th century. She was born in Mostar and died in Sarajevo.
