Virasat is an Indian cultural festival that celebrates all aspects of the country's cultural heritage. It is held at Dehradun, India and recognised as the afro-asia biggest folk life and heritage festival. Organized by REACH (Rural Entrepreneurship for Art & Cultural Heritage), this week-long festival includes performances and workshops in Indian folk and classical arts, literature, crafts, theatre, cinema and yoga.

Classical music and dance maestros and master craftsmen are invited to perform at the festival with the objective of fostering interaction between students, artists and craftsmen during the first half of the academic year. [1] [2]

The name Virasat can be translated from Hindi as "heritage".

History

Virasat 1995

The festival was first held in Dehradun, Uttarakhand in 1995. [3] Virasat 2008 expanded the festival into a nationwide event. It took place on 2 September 2008, with concerts and events in Delhi and 300 other localities, lasting until December.

Artists such as Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, T.N. Seshagopalan, Alarmel Valli, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Shovana Narayan, Pt. Rajan and Sajan Misra, Teejan Bai also participated in the series of concerts. [4]

Virasat 2017

Today, the festival is held in Dehradun, and a theatre program has been added. In 2017, it was held from 28 April to 12 May. [5]

The festival, which is celebrating its 22nd edition this year, was inaugurated by Uttarakhand governor KK Paul. The 15-day long fest which will go on till 12 May will see performances by over 500 artists from across the country including Dona Ganguly, Shujat Khan, Wadali Bandhu, Warsi Brothers, Peenaz Masani etc. The inaugural event of the festival was a folk dance from the Jaunsar Bawar region of Uttarakhand performed by the Magh Mela Sanskritik Lok Kala Manch from Chakrata. This was followed by classical singing in Khayal style by the Banaras Gharana exponents, renowned singers, Pt. Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra. Incidentally, the festival is a highlight of the winter months in Dehradun, but it was rescheduled following the demonetisation declaration in November.[ citation needed ]

Pt. Arup Chattopadhyay is an Indian tabla player. He was born at Chandannagar, West Bengal. He started learning tabla at the age of six from his father Pt. Pankaj Chattopadhyay, who himself is a tabla player of Bengal. After a few years, he came under the tutelage of world-famous tabla maestro Pandit Sankar Ghosh of Farukkhabad gharana with whom he continues to learn. Gradually he has established himself as a top class accompanist and a formidable soloist. His performances are admired for their tonal quality, crystal clear sound of bols even at an electrifying speed, and tremendous sense of rhythm and melody. He was awarded the top-grade by All India Radio and Television. His performances with most of the leading artists like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ashish Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Rais Khan, Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Pandit Manas Chakraborty, Pandit Viswamohan Bhat, Ustad Rashid khan, Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumder, Pandit Nayan Ghosh and Pandit Kushal Das among others, has established him as a top-notch accompanist throughout the world. Since 1998, he has been honored to accompany the living legend Pt. Ravi Shankar in his tours throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and India. He accompanied Pt. Deepak Chowdhury in his U.K. tour, and Pandit Kartick Seshadri in his U.S., Canada, Australia and Mexico tours. He is also a highly accomplished tabla teacher and was a professor of tabla at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London. Since 1998 he has been a visiting lecturer of tabla at the University of California, San Diego.

Annick Chaymotty, known by the stage name Kumari Devayani, is an Indian dancer who performs in the classical Indian dance style Bharatanatyam. She has performed in India as well as in festivals and concert halls in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, the Scandinavian countries, Estonia, and South Korea. Devayānī is an empanelled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. In 2009, she was awarded the Padma Shri.

Uttarakhand Day also referred to as Uttarakhand Divas is celebrated as the state foundation day of Indian state Uttarakhand. It is observed annually on 9 November.
