Virtua Fighter Kids [a] is a 1996 installment in the Virtua Fighter fighting video game series, and a super deformed version of Virtua Fighter 2 . [3] It was developed by Sega AM2 on the ST-V arcade board, unlike Virtua Fighter 2's hardware; [4] it was also ported to the Sega Saturn home console.
All the characters have big heads, and the music is at a faster pace. The gameplay itself is slightly tweaked from Virtua Fighter 2. The Saturn version includes some new FMVs and programmable button sequences to allow players to test and use pre-made combos. [5] Despite being children, some of the fighters retain the adult characteristics of their Virtua Fighter 2 counterparts, such as facial hair, muscles and breasts. [6] [7]
Merchandise for the game in Japan included a line of stuffed toys which sold very well even before development on the game was finished. [8]
In Japan, Virtua Fighter Kids was released on the Saturn as a promotional item in co-operation with drink brands "Java Tea" and "Energen" under the title Virtua Fighter Kids: Java Tea Original Edition. It was later released commercially without any mention of "Java Tea" on the cover. All Java Tea product placement was removed from the western versions of the game, [9] but is present in all Japanese versions (arcade, [10] regular and Java Edition).
Although no official sequels to Virtua Fighter Kids were ever made (other than the VF Kids versions of the CG Portrait Series in Japan called the Game Gear Portrait Series), the child versions of Akira Yuki and Sarah Bryant reappear as playable characters in Fighters Megamix , [11] and some of their fellow playable characters appear in the game's ending movie as well. The Kid styles of Akira Yuki and Sarah Bryant were made into figures in the Sega Dreamcast game Shenmue .

In Japan, Game Machine listed Virtua Fighter Kids on their May 1, 1996 issue as being the third most-successful arcade game of the month. [17]
Virtua Fighter Kids divided reviewers to an extent. GameSpot , Scary Larry of GamePro and Dan Hsu, Crispin Boyer and Sushi-X of Electronic Gaming Monthly said that, while Virtua Fighter Kids would have made an amusing bonus mode in Virtua Fighter 2, it was not worthwhile as a full-price standalone release. [6] [14] [18] On the other side, Next Generation , Rich Leadbetter of Sega Saturn Magazine and Shawn Smith of Electronic Gaming Monthly argued that features such as the funny cinemas, the new facial expressions on the characters and the new kid-themed scenery make the game more than a money-making gimmick, though they also said that it is not as good as the original version of Virtua Fighter 2. [6] [7] [15] Most reviewers criticized the short reach of the kid characters. [6] [7] [14] [18] In a retrospect review, Colin of Allgame found the game the same as it’s predecessors with faster gameplay and easier for younger players. He concluded saying: "While Virtua Fighter Kids doesn't necessarily offer anything spectacular, it's definitely a must-buy for the Virtua Fighter fan who needs everything or anyone who is interested in those big-headed Japanese cartoon characters." [19] In 1998, Saturn Power ranked the game 86th on their Top 100 Sega Saturn Games, summarizing: "VF Kids is a pointless addition to the fold and offers very little new of any interest". [20]
Virtua Fighter is a fighting video game developed and published by Sega for arcades. It was developed for the Sega Model 1 arcade platform by AM2, a development group within Sega headed by Yu Suzuki. An early prototype version was location tested in Japan by August 1993, before the complete game was released worldwide in December 1993. It was the first arcade fighting game to feature fully 3D polygon graphics. The game was ported to Sega Saturn as a global launch title in 1994 and 1995, and also received a port to the Sega 32X.
Virtua Cop is a 1994 light gun shooter video game developed and published by Sega for arcades. It was developed for the Sega Model 2 system, and was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1995 and Windows as Virtua Squad in 1996. The Saturn version included support for both the Virtua Gun and Saturn mouse, as well as a new "Training Mode" which consists of a randomly generated shooting gallery.
Street Fighter Alpha 2, known as Street Fighter Zero 2 in Japan, Asia, South America, and Oceania, is a 1996 fighting game originally released for the CPS II arcade hardware by Capcom. The game is a remake of the previous year's Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams and features a number of improvements, such as new attacks, stages, endings, and gameplay features. It was ported to the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Super Nintendo home consoles globally in 1996, and later a Windows port. It was followed by Street Fighter Alpha 3 in 1998.
Battle Arena Toshinden, released as Toh Shin Den in Japan, is a 1995 fighting video game developed by Tamsoft and published by Takara for the PlayStation. It was one of the first fighting games, after Virtua Fighter on arcade and console, to boast polygonal characters in a 3D environment, and features a sidestep maneuver which is credited for taking the genre into "true 3D."
Virtua Racing or V.R. for short, is a Formula One racing video game developed by Sega AM2 and released for arcades in 1992. Virtua Racing was initially a proof-of-concept application for exercising a new 3D graphics platform under development, the "Model 1". The results were so encouraging that Virtua Racing was fully developed into a standalone arcade title.
Sega AM Research & Development No. 2, previously known as SEGA-AM2 Co., Ltd., is a video game development team within the Japanese multinational video game developer Sega. Yu Suzuki, who had previously developed arcade games for Sega including Hang-On and Out Run, was the first manager of the department.
Virtua Cop 2 is a light gun shooter arcade game, released in 1995 and developed internally at Sega by their AM2 studio. It was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1996, PC in 1997, and Sega Dreamcast in 2000. It was bundled with Virtua Cop in Virtua Cop: Elite Edition for PlayStation 2 in 2002.
Marvel Super Heroes is a 1995 fighting game developed and published by Capcom. Originally released in the arcade on the CPS-2 arcade system, it was ported to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation in late 1997. The game, alongside Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, was also included in the Marvel vs. Capcom Origins collection, released digitally for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2012.
Fighters Megamix is a 1996 fighting video game developed by Sega AM2, a crossover between Sega's 3D arcade fighting games Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers, with unlockable characters from several other AM2 games such as Virtua Cop 2 and Daytona USA. Developed for Sega Saturn, it had a global release in 1997; unlike most of AM2's games of the era, Fighters Megamix did not have an arcade release.
Die Hard Arcade, known as Dynamite Deka in Japan, is an arcade beat 'em up video game released by Sega. It was the first beat 'em up to use texture-mapped 3D polygon graphics, and used a sophisticated move set by contemporary beat 'em up standards, often being likened to a fighting game in this respect. It also features quick time events, the ability to combine items to make more powerful weapons, and in two-player mode the ability to perform combined special moves and combos.
Virtua Fighter 2 is a 1994 fighting video game developed and published by Sega for arcades. It is the second game in the Virtua Fighter series and the sequel to Virtua Fighter (1993). Created by Sega's Yu Suzuki-headed AM2 team, it was designed on the purpose-made Sega Model 2 hardware which provided a significant upgrade in graphical capabilities. Following its release on the arcades, Virtua Fighter 2 was ported to the Sega Saturn home console in November 1995, while ports for some other platforms appeared later.
Fighting Vipers is a 1995 fighting video game developed by Sega AM2. A 3D fighter, it uses the same game engine as AM2's Virtua Fighter 2 (1994) but features enclosed arenas and an armor mechanic, and was targeted more towards Western audiences, using a U.S. setting and more freeform styles of martial arts.
Virtua Fighter 3 is a 1996 fighting video game developed and published by Sega, the sequel to 1994's Virtua Fighter 2 as part of the Virtua Fighter series. Released originally in arcades, Virtua Fighter 3 was the first arcade game to run on the Sega Model 3 system board. The use of this new hardware gave the game revolutionary graphics for its time. Two new characters were added to the roster: Aoi and Taka-Arashi, both of whom are oriented around traditional Japanese martial arts.
Dead or Alive is a 1996 fighting game developed and published by Tecmo for arcades. It is the first entry in the Dead or Alive series. Built on the Sega Model 2 hardware, it was released first in arcades in 1996, followed by home ports for the Sega Saturn in Japan during 1997, and for the PlayStation in all regions during 1998.
Virtual On: Cyber Troopers is a 3D action video game developed and published by Sega. A robot-themed shooter and fighter, it was developed on the Sega Model 2 hardware and released on arcades in January 1996 before ports to the Sega Saturn that year and to Windows the next year. Initially the game was to be released under the title "Virtual On" in Japan and "Cyber Troopers" in North America, but ultimately these two names were combined into a single title for both regions.

The highly influential first Virtua Fighter game is widely recognized as the first 3D fighting game released.
Manx TT Super Bike is a 1995 arcade racing game developed jointly by Sega AM3 and Sega-AM4. It is a motorcycle racing game built for the Sega Model 2 arcade board. Up to 8 players can race in this game if enough arcade cabinets are linked together, following on from Daytona USA. It was later ported to the Sega Saturn by Tantalus Interactive and to Windows by Perfect Entertainment.
Last Bronx is a 1996 3D fighting video game developed by Sega AM3 on the Sega Model 2 mainboard. It was released in Japanese and American arcades before home versions were produced in for the contemporary Sega Saturn and Windows systems in 1997. Set in a crime-ridden Tokyo, the game follows rival street gangs who take part in a weapon fighting tournament. Last Bronx became a big hit in Japan, and it was soon novelized and serialized into comics and radio drama, and a year later Takashi Shimizu directed the direct-to-video live-action movie. On June 29, 2006, Sega released Last Bronx on PlayStation 2 as a tenth anniversary celebration.
Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition, or Daytona USA: Circuit Edition in Japan, is a racing game by Sega, specifically designed for the Sega Saturn. Released in 1996, it is a reworked and extended version of the original Daytona USA, and was developed by Sega AM3, the same team that oversaw the Saturn port of Sega Rally Championship, by using a modified version of the Sega Saturn engine of Sega Rally Championship.
DecAthlete, released in Europe as Athlete Kings due to a licensing issue, is a track-and-field themed arcade sports video game. On its unveiling, the gaming media generally described it as a modern clone of Daley Thompson's Decathlon. Released in 1996, it was developed by Sega AM3 and produced by Sega. A home port was released on the Sega Saturn in 1996, largely identical to the arcade version, due to the similar hardware of the ST-V hardware and the Saturn. It was released on the PlayStation 2 in Japan only as part of the Sega Ages 2500 series. Compared to other decathlon based games, Decathlete has a more comic and cartoon-like style. A sequel followed in 1997, which was the winter sports-based Winter Heat.
