History

Visi Media Asia was started in 2004 by Bakrie Global Ventura. It provides news, sports, and lifestyle content on traditional and online platforms. It owns two television channels, tvOne and ANTV, and the online news website VIVANews (now VIVA.co.id), which has an application available for BlackBerry, SMS, Android, and Brew. [2]

On April 30, 2006, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation through STAR TV and Fox International Channels bought a 20% stake in ANTV. In 2007, ANTV changed its logo and focused on programs for children and female audiences. [3]

In 2008, tvOne call sign was launched as a television station focused on news and sports for the ABC 15+ audience segment. [4] In 2009, Murdoch’s StarTV divested all of its shares ownership in ANTV, and through its subsidiary Fast Plus Limited, obtained a 7.5% share ownership in VIVA. [5]

In 2012, Visi Media Asia acquired FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil exclusive broadcasting covering FTA Rights, Pay TV Rights, Radio Rights, Mobile Rights, and IPTV Rights. All matches in the  competition were broadcast nationally on FTA channel ANTV and tvOne. [6]

In 2013, Visi Media Asia and other subsidiaries of Bakrie Group faced a huge financial crisis. The Bakrie family decided to sell their majority interest in Visi Media Asia to buy coal assets from London-listed Bumi Plc. Offering approximately 51% of the stakes, they received a number of bids, including two from MNC Group, CT Corp. and Elang Mahkota Teknologi (which controls SCTV).

The Bakries sought a valuation of $1.2-2 billion for the media unit, although Viva’s market capitalization was only $845 million. [7]

In 2019, VIVA Group made an undisclosed investment in BumiLangit Studios, Indonesian character based entertainment company in Indonesia, that managed 500 superheroes characters including a 2019 theater hit Gundala. [8]
