Winston-Salem is a city and the county seat of Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. In the 2020 census, the population was 249,545, making it the second-largest municipality in the Piedmont Triad region, the 5th most populous city in North Carolina, the third-largest urban area in North Carolina, and the 90th most populous city in the United States. With a metropolitan population of 679,948 it is the fourth largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. Winston-Salem is home to the tallest office building in the region, 100 North Main Street, formerly known as the Wachovia Building and now known locally as the Wells Fargo Center.
The R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) is an American tobacco manufacturing company based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and headquartered at the RJR Plaza Building. Founded by R. J. Reynolds in 1875, it is the second-largest tobacco company in the U.S.. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Reynolds American, after merging with the U.S. operations of British American Tobacco in 2004.
Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina that was originally settled by the Moravian community in 1766. This small city features a living history museum that interprets the restored Moravian community. The non-profit organization began its work in 1950, although some private residents had restored buildings earlier. As the Old Salem Historic District, it was declared a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1966 and expanded in 2016. The district showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries, communal buildings, churches, houses, and shops.

Salem Tavern is a historic museum property at 800 South Main Street in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was a tavern in the 18th-century town of Salem, which is now part of Winston-Salem. It is part of Old Salem Museums & Gardens and open as an Old Salem tour building to visitors. Built in 1784 and enlarged in 1815, it was the first entirely brick building in what is now Old Salem, and is one of the oldest surviving brick tavern buildings in the United States. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
The Single Brothers' House was built to house the Single Brethren, the unmarried men, of the Moravian Congregation of Salem, now Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is part of Old Salem Museums & Gardens and open as an Old Salem tour building to visitors. It is located at 600 South Main Street, at Academy Street, on the southwest corner.
The Reynolds Building is a 314-foot (96 m) Art Deco skyscraper at 51 E. 4th Street in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina with 313,996 square feet (29,171.2 m2) of space. It was completed in 1929 and has 21 floors. For much of its history the building served as headquarters for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. After a sale to PMC Property Group in 2014, the building went through an estimated $60 million in renovations. In March 2016, The Residences @ the R.J. Reynolds Building, apartments located on the top 11 floors, opened. The first six floors opened as the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in April. Katharine Brasserie & Bar, a restaurant named for Katharine Smith Reynolds, followed in May.
Graylyn Estate, or Graylin, is a historic estate located in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The construction of the Norman Revival style mansion began in 1928. Associated with the house are a number of contributing outbuildings including a garage-guest house and "farm" complex. Today, Graylyn estate is used as a conference center and hotel. It is currently a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Arista Cotton Mill Complex, also known as Salem Cotton Manufacturing Company and Arista Cotton Mill and Lentz Transfer & Storage Co., is a historic cotton mill complex located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The complex includes two buildings: a brick building built in 1836 by part of the Moravian congregation of Salem and the original home of the Salem Cotton Manufacturing Company, and the other is the original Arista Mill, built in 1880 by F. and H. Fries Cotton Arista Mills. The 1836 Salem Cotton Mill is a three-story, brick building with a monitor roof. The 1880 mill is a three-story brick building, 14 bays long, with bracketed eaves with timber supports. A two-story roughly triangular brick building was added about 1900. The 1836 building has been converted to a hotel known as The Historic Brookstown Inn.
Shamrock Mills, also known as Hanes Hosiery Mill #1, is a historic textile mill building located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was built in 1911, and is a one-story brick building with daylight basement. It is six bays deep and extends in seven sections with a rhythmic saw-tooth roof and six-foot skylights. An addition was built in 1925. It was the first building used by the Hanes Hosiery Company. The mill closed in 1926, and the building subsequently housed a Cadillac dealership. The building houses the Sawtooth School for Visual Art.
Indera Mills, also known as Maline Mills, is a historic textile mill complex located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The complex includes a two-story, gable roof brick building with a brick addition ; a small, one-story brick boiler room building ; and two flat-roof brick buildings built between 1907 and 1912 with their long sides contiguous. Indera Mills occupied the complex until 1998. The complex has been converted to commercial and residential use.
P.H. Hanes Knitting Company is a historic textile mill complex located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The complex includes three buildings. The Knitting Building or North Building was built in 1920–1921, and is a six-story, Beaux-Arts style concrete and steel building sheathed in brick. The Mill Building or East Building was built in 1928, and is a five-story-plus-basement building of concrete, brick, and steel construction. The Warehouse and Shipping Building was built in 1940, and is a six-story steel frame building sheathed in brick. The P.H. Hanes Knitting Company was founded in 1901 by Pleasant H. Hanes, brother of John W. Hanes who founded Shamrock Mills, later Hanes Hosiery. In February 1965, P. H. Hanes Knitting Company merged with Hanes Hosiery. The downtown mill complex closed in 1965. The complex has been converted to loft apartments.
W.C. Brown Apartment Building was a historic apartment building located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was built about 1941, and was a two-story brick-veneered rectangular block structure. It had a hipped roof and exposed rafter ends in the Bungalow / American Craftsman style. The building was built as rental apartments for African-American families just before World War II. The building housed workers at the nearby R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The building has been demolished.
Craver Apartment Building is a historic apartment building located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was built about 1942, and is a two-story, five bay, brick-veneered rectangular block structure with hipped roof and exposed rafter ends. It has a hipped roof and exposed rafter ends in the Bungalow / American Craftsman style. It features porches on both levels supported by full-height square brick posts. The building was built as rental apartments for African-American families just before World War II.
Winston-Salem Southbound Railway Freight Warehouse and Office is a historic railway freight warehouse and office building located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was built in 1913, and is a two-story, brick railroad building with a shallow gable roof and Italianate-style design elements. It measures 40 feet by 224 feet. The building served until 1985 as headquarters for the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway. In 1990, the building was sympathetically renovated for office use.
Winston-Salem City Hall is a historic city hall located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was designed by the architectural firm Northup and O'Brien and built in 1926. It is a three-story, "U"-shaped Renaissance Revival building. It is a brick building with a first floor of rusticated stone. It has a flat roof with a limestone cornice and balustrade with shaped balusters. The Salem town offices were housed in the Salem Town Hall until consolidation in 1913. The building was renovated in 2000.
S. J. Nissen Building, also known as S. J. Nissen Carriage Repository and Repair Shop, S. J. Nissen Company Wagonworks, Kester Machinery Company, and Black Horse Studio is a historic factory building located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The original 1893 primary structure is a three-story Romanesque Revival style brick building with a basement and sub basement. It features two crenellated front towers and round-arched windows. A two-story addition with basement was added in 1953. The building originally housed a wagon making and repair shop and a carriage repository.
South Trade Street Houses are a set of three historic homes located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. They are known as the Sussdorf, Ackerman and Patterson Houses and associated with the Moravian community of Salem. The Sussdorf House was built in 1838, and is a two-story, four-bay-by-two-bay, brick dwelling. The Ackerman House was built in 1856, and is a two-story brick dwelling with a full-width, hip-roof Victorian porch. The Patterson House was built in 1857, and is a two-story, three-bay-by-two-bay, brick dwelling.
Winston-Salem Tobacco Historic District is a national historic district located at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 16 contributing buildings and 16 contributing structures in a predominantly industrial section of Winston-Salem. The buildings date from about 1890 to 1959, and include buildings relating to the tobacco industry, specifically R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Also on the district are a once-thriving African American and the wholesale commercial business district that once catered to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company workers. Located in the district is the separately listed Romanesque Revival style S. J. Nissen Building and Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Company.
