Wardomyces is a genus of seven species of mould fungi in the family Microascaceae. The genus was circumscribed in 1923 by Frederick Tom Brooks and Clifford Gerald Hansford. The generic name honours Harry Marshall Ward, Professor of Botany at Cambridge University. The type species, Wardomyces anomalus , was originally found as a mould growing on rabbit meat kept in cold storage. [1] The most recent addition to the genus is W. moseri , described by Walter Gams in 1995. Found in Colombia, it was discovered growing on a dead petiole of moriche palm ( Mauritia flexuosa ). [2]
Mycelial cords are linear aggregations of parallel-oriented hyphae. The mature cords are composed of wide, empty vessel hyphae surrounded by narrower sheathing hyphae. Cords may look similar to plant roots, and also frequently have similar functions; hence they are also called rhizomorphs.
Lineostroma is a genus of fungi in the family Venturiaceae; according to the 2007 Outline of Ascomycota, the placement in this family is uncertain. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Lineostroma banksiae.
Westea is a genus of fungi in the class Dothideomycetes. The relationship of this taxon to other taxa within the class is unknown. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Westea banksiae, which grows on Banksia trees in Australia. Described by South African botanist Haring Johannes 'Harry' Swart, it was originally collected from the leaves of Banksia integrifolia in Victoria.
Ascodichaena is a genus of fungi within the Ascodichaenaceae family. The genus was circumscribed in 1977.
Mycaureola is a genus of fungi in the family Physalacriaceae of mushrooms. Circumscribed in 1922 by French mycologists René Maire and Émile Chemin, the genus is monotypic, containing the single species Mycaureola dilseae. The fungus is a parasite of the red algal species Dilsea carnosa, on which it causes circular necrotic lesions.
Physocystidium is a genus of fungi in the family Tricholomataceae. This is a monotypic genus, containing the single species Physocystidium cinnamomeum. This species is found in Trinidad, and was originally described as new to science in 1951 as Collybia cinnamomea by mycologist R.W.G. Dennis; Rolf Singer transferred it to the then newly created genus Physocystidium in 1962.
Utharomyces is a fungal genus in the Pilobolaceae family. The genus is monotypic, containing the single coprophilous (dung-loving) species Utharomyces epallocaulus, which is widely distributed in subtropical regions. Utharomyces was circumscribed by the Dutch botanist Karel Bernard Boedijn in 1958. U. epallocaulus has been collected in Bahamas, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Mexico, China, and the United States.
Stenella canavaliae or Stenella canavaliae-roseae, formerly known as Cercospora canavaliae is a species of anamorphic fungi. It causes the brown leaf mould of Canavalia species.
Zoophagus is a genus of zygomycete fungi that preys on rotifers and nematodes. It was established in 1911 by Sommerstorff, who originally considered it to be an oomycete. It is common in a variety of freshwater habitats, such as ponds and sewage treatment plants.
George Smith was a British mycologist. Born in Great Harwood, he graduated from the University of Manchester in 1916 with first-class honours, and received his Master's degree in chemistry two years later. After starting a laboratory with the textile manufacturing company Boardman and Baron Ltd. in 1919, he began to study the mildew and moulds that grew on goods made from cotton.
Penicillium erythromellis is an anamorph species of the genus of Penicillium.
Penicillium giganteum is a species of the genus of Penicillium which was isolated from soil.
Gulielma Lister was a British botanist and mycologist, and was considered an international authority on Mycetozoa.
Epicoccum nigrum is a species of fungus in the phylum Ascomycota. A plant pathogen and endophyte, it is a widespread fungus which produces coloured pigments that can be used as antifungal agents against other pathogenic fungi. The fluorescent stain epicocconone is extracted from it.
Agathe Louise van Beverwijk was a Dutch mycologist and botanist. She spent most of her career at the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures, where she was director from 1958 until her death in 1963.
Walter Philip Kennedy Findlay was a US-born British mycologist.
Vizella is a genus of leaf-inhabiting fungi in the class Dothideomycetes, and the type genus of the family Vizellaceae. The genus was circumscribed by Pier Andrea Saccardo in 1883.
George Carver Clerk, was a Ghanaian botanist and plant pathologist. A professor and later, an emeritus professor at the University of Ghana, Legon, he also focused his research on West African mycology and ecology. Clerk, along with his academic contemporary Ebenezer Laing (1931–2015), was one of Ghana's earliest practitioners of botany as a scientific discipline, in addition to his pioneering role as a plant pathologist in West Africa. In 1973, G. C. Clerk became a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Ligniera is a genus of the family Plasmodiophoraceae.
