Washington is a town in Vilas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,577 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 47.5 square miles (123.2 km2), of which, 41.4 square miles (107.2 km2) of it is land and 6.2 square miles (15.9 km2) of it (12.93%) is water.
As of the census [2] of 2000, there were 1,577 people, 683 households, and 491 families residing in the town. The population density was 38.1 people per square mile (14.7/km2). There were 1,706 housing units at an average density of 41.2 per square mile (15.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.67% White, 0.19% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.06% Asian, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.32% of the population.
There were 683 households, out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.71.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 20.4% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 31.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
