Mayor of Valenzuela (2022–present)

Gatchalian was elected as the mayor of Valenzuela in the 2022 local elections, succeeding his brother Rex who had served since 2013. He was elected with 275,650 votes or 78.61% of the votes, defeating his sole opponent Bombit Bernardo who received 75,026 votes or 21.39% of the votes. [16] [17] In his campaign, he did not deny being part of a political dynasty, stating that there are good and bad political dynasties. [18]

He took the oath of office on June 29, 2022, at WES Arena in Barangay Punturin, alongside his brother, Win, who was re-elected as senator. Among the attendees in his oath-taking were Vice Mayor Lorena Natividad-Borja, Representatives Rex Gatchalian and Eric Martinez, and Senator Imee Marcos. [19] He is the member of his family to be the city's mayor, following his brothers Win and Rex.

He was the chairman of the House Committee on National Defense in the 13th Congress and deputy speaker in the 17th and 18th Congresses. Sherwin Ting Gatchalian, known as Win Gatchalian, is a Filipino politician and businessman serving as a Senator since 2016. A member of the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), he previously served as the Representative of Valenzuela's 1st district from 2001 to 2004 and from 2013 to 2016. He was the Mayor of Valenzuela from 2004 to 2013.

Magtanggol Tanjuan Gunigundo I, also known as Magi Gunigundo, is a Filipino politician who last served as the representative of the second district of Valenzuela to House of Representatives from 2001 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2016. He also served as the representative of the now-defunct lone district of Valenzuela from 1998 to 2001.

On May 13, 2015, a fire broke out at the Kentex manufacturing factory in Valenzuela, Metro Manila, Philippines. 72 people were killed in the fire, making the incident the joint-second worst fire disaster in Philippine history alongside the Manor Hotel fire in 2001; only the Ozone Disco Club fire in 1996 had claimed more lives.

Valenzuela's 1st congressional district is one of the two congressional districts of the Philippines in the city of Valenzuela. It has been represented in the House of Representatives of the Philippines since 2001. The district was created following Valenzuela's conversion into a highly urbanized city through Republic Act No. 8526 on February 14, 1998. It consists of 24 barangays in the northern part of the city, namely Arkong Bato, Balangkas, Bignay, Bisig, Canumay East, Canumay West, Coloong, Dalandanan, Isla, Lawang Bato, Lingunan, Mabolo, Malanday, Malinta, Palasan, Pariancillo Villa, Pasolo, Poblacion, Polo, Punturin, Rincon, Tagalag, Veinte Reales and Wawang Pulo. It is currently vacant for the 19th Congress since the resignation of its most recent representative Rex Gatchalian upon assuming the position of Secretary of Social Welfare and Development in 2023.

Local elections were held in Valenzuela on May 9, 2022, as part of the Philippine general election. Held concurrently with the national elections, the electorate voted to elect a mayor, a vice mayor, twelve city council members, and two district representatives to congress. Those elected took their respective offices on June 30, 2022, for a three-year-long term. 350,676 out of 443,611 registered voters voted in this election.

Eric Morales Martinez is a Filipino politician who is currently a member of House of Representatives from Valenzuela's 2nd district since 2016 and he was the House Deputy Speaker for 18th Congress from 2020 to 2022. He is currently a member of the former ruling party PDP–Laban, where he also serves as its Vice President for National Capital Region.
