Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) is an administrative set-up established by the government of Odisha on 11 November 1998. This council was particularly established to bring development in the backward western Odisha region. [1] This organization is highly criticized by politicians, and members of the civil society as it has failed to live up to the expectations. [2] Many says that formation of the Western Orissa Development Council is an acknowledgement of regional imbalance, [3] and term it as "rehabilitation platform" for the ruling party.[ citation needed ] The Odisha State Legislative Assembly demanding removal of the chairperson of the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) and its expert members.[ citation needed ]

Hirakud is a small township located in Sambalpur in Odisha. It was a Notified Area Council (NAC) which was later included along with Burla in Sambalpur city to become a Municipal Corporation. This city is a hub of HINDALCO, an Indian aluminium and copper manufacturing company. Hirakud Dam, is one of the most visited tourist spot. It is one of the longest and largest dams in the world. It is constructed across the Mahanadi river between the Gandhi Minar in North and the Nehru Minar in the South, which connects these two hills. The shoreline spans around 640 km. This dam had a generating capacity of 290MW.

The Kosal state movement is an effort by people of the Western Odisha region of India to secede from the state of Odisha. Organizations like Western Odisha Yuva Manch (WOYM), Kosal Youth Coordination Committee (KYCC), Kosal State Coordination Committee (KSCC), Koshal Sena, Koshal Mukti Bahini and Koshal Mukti Morcha are mainly leading this.

The Kosal region of India had been a prosperous land with abundant natural resources and a self-sufficient economy. Flooding was not a very well known occurrence in the region; however, there were many occasions of droughts.

Deba Ray College, Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar is a government aided general college in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, which offer courses in higher secondary (+2) and under-graduate levels. The courses in the higher secondary level are affiliated to the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha and courses offered in the under-graduate levels are affiliated to Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.

The Western Odisha Development Council sponsors upcoming medical colleges in Balangir, Kalahandi and Sundergarh district of Western Odisha. These medical colleges are partly sponsored by the Western Odisha Development Council in India.

Madhusudan Das was an Indian lawyer and social reformer, who founded Utkal Sammilani in 1903 to campaign for the unification of Odisha along with its social and industrial development. He was one of the prominent figure, helping in the creation of Orissa Province, which was established on 1 April 1936. He was also the first graduate and advocate of Orissa. He is also known as Kulabruddha, Madhu Babu, and Utkal Gouraba. In Odisha, his birthday is celebrated as the Lawyers' Day on 28 April.

He wrote 16 books in English and 20 in Odia. He was also a columnist in several leading Odia journals and newspapers. He organised several camps across Odisha, for helping the cause of the poor and downtrodden.
