The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is a professional women's basketball league in the Philippines.

It is organized by the National Basketball League (NBL) which also maintains a men's league.

History

The National Basketball League (NBL) which maintains a men's league decided to organize a women's league as well to support the program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the Philippines' national governing body for basketball. [1] [2]

The WNBL inaugural season began on April 7, 2019 and featured seven teams: Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force, Taguig Lady Generals, Pampanga Delta Amazons, Cleon and Clyde Lady Snipers, Laguna Lady Pistons & Paranaque Lady Aces. [3] Air Force won the inaugural title. [4] The WNBL planned to hold its second season in 2020 but such move was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]

On August 26, 2020, the Games and Amusements Board accepted the NBL and WNBL's application to become professional leagues. [6] [4] The first WNBL draft was held in February 13, 2021.

The first professional season of the WNBL began on July 18, 2021.

Also in 2021, WNBL launched their own 3x3 Tournament and the season will continue to the year 2022. (2021-22 WNBL 3x3 Season)

The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is the pre-eminent professional women's basketball league in Australia. It is currently composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (NBL). Several WNBL teams have NBL counterparts. United Regional Basketball League

The United Regional Basketball League (URBL) was a community-based amateur basketball league in the Philippines that played only one season in 2004. The league was managed by persons identified with the old Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), a professional community-based league that suspended operations in the middle of 2002. Basketball legend and former MBA commissioner Ramon Fernandez reprised his role with the URBL.

The 2021 WNBL–Philippines draft was the league's draft for the 2021 WNBL–Philippines season which is also the first season of the WNBL as a professional league. It is the first ever draft of the league. Delayed by restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the draft was held on February 13, 2021.
