Woodhead is a suburb of Cheadle in the Staffordshire Moorlands district of the county of Staffordshire, England. Its name derives from the former colliery that was once present. ^[1] It forms a northern expansion of the town of Cheadle and is a part of the civil parish of Cheadle.

History

Woodhead's name is used for the name of a country house called "Woodhead Hall". The hall is located to the east of the area.

Woodhead Colliery

Woodhead Colliery was built in the Cheadle Coalfield and was owned by the Bowers Family. It operated in the area until 1943 due to the coalfield around it running out of resources and reserves. ^[2] This led to the closure of the colliery soon after. The colliery also had its own industrial tramway. ^[3]

The Miners Rest Pub

There was once a pub located in Woodhead. It was located at the junction of Hammersley Hayes Road and Froghall Road. The pub was built likely during the operation of the Woodhead Colliery hence its name. It was still an active pub in the area until it was closed in 2013. It remained derelict and abandoned for nearly 10 years with original proposals to reopen it to converting it all falling through. ^[4] In 2021, the pub was demolished ^{[5] [6]} to make way for a brand new residential development called "Royal Gardens". ^[7]
