Yao Airport (八尾空港, Yao Kūkō, ICAO: RJOY) is a general aviation airport in Yao, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Located 8.1  NM (15.0 km; 9.3 mi) southeast of Ōsaka Station, [1] it is also an airbase for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.

Several small carriers offer sightseeing and charter flights from Yao, including Asahi Airlines and Hankyu Airlines.

Yao is the only second class airport in Japan that does not have scheduled airline services.

History

The airport started as Hanshin Aviation School in 1938. Two years later the airfield was seized by the army as the Taishō Airfield and expanded. After World War II, the occupation forces called it the Hanshin Airfield before it was returned to Japanese control. [2]

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force operates a base at the airport, JGSDF Camp Yao (八尾駐屯地). Units based at Camp Yao include: [3]

Osaka Prefecture

The Osaka Prefectural Fire Department operates two Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin helicopters from Yao. They are primarily used for firefighting within Osaka, but were dispatched overseas to assist with the 1991 Bangladesh cyclone and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. [4]

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport Airport in Chengdu, Sichuan, China

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is the major international airport serving Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, China. Located about 16 kilometres (10 mi) southwest of downtown Chengdu to the north of Shuangliu District, Shuangliu airport is an important aviation hub for Western China. Shuangliu Airport is one of the two core hubs for Air China, together with Beijing, as well as the main hub and headquarters for Sichuan Airlines and Chengdu Airlines. China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Lucky Air and Tibet Airlines also have bases at Shuangliu Airport.

Ibaraki Airport

Ibaraki Airport is an airport in the city of Omitama, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. It also serves as an air base for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) under the name Hyakuri Air Base, and is the closest fighter base to Tokyo. The airport was known as Hyakuri Airfield prior to March 2010, when civil aviation operations began.

1st Helicopter Brigade Military unit

The 1st Helicopter Brigade is based at JGSDF Camp Kisarazu in Kisarazu, in Chiba Prefecture. Formerly an independent brigade, it was attached to the Central Readiness Force on March 28, 2007. Like most JGSDF units, the brigade's aircraft are deployed to conduct exercises from their Kisarazu base annually during the New Year period.

Amakusa Airfield (天草飛行場) is an airport located 2.3 NM northwest of Amakusa, Kumamoto, Japan, on the Amakusa Islands. Locals often referred to the airfield as Amakusa Airport. It is located on the northern side of the Amakusa Islands, north west of Amakusa city. Only one airline, Amakusa Airlines, uses this airfield, in which the airline is headquartered.

The Central Army is one of five active Armies of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. It is headquartered in Itami, Hyōgo. Its responsibility is the defense of Chūgoku, Kansai, Shikoku and the Southern half of the Chūbu region.

Xinyang Minggang Airport

Xinyang Minggang Airport, or Minggang Air Base, is a dual-use civil and military airport serving the city of Xinyang in Henan Province, China. It is in the town of Minggang in Pingqiao District, about 45 kilometres (28 mi) from downtown Xinyang and 48 kilometres (30 mi) from the city of Zhumadian.

Shangqiu Airport, or Shangqiu Air Base, is a military air base near the city of Shangqiu in China's Henan Province. It is located in Guantang Township, Liangyuan District, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of the city center. The airport was built in the 1930s and was known as Gui'deAirbase, and served in national defense operations during the Sino-Japanese Conflict, and the planning is to convert the air base into a dual-use military and civil airport with an estimated investment of 500 million yuan. The airport is expected to serve 300,000 passengers and 1,000 tons of cargo per year by 2020.

Fighter units of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force

Fighter units of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force are squadrons of fighter aircraft dedicated to the defense of Japan. As Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution states that the country renounces war, JASDF fighter squadrons have never been deployed in combat overseas.

Central Air Command Support Squadron (JASDF) Military unit

Central Air Command Support Squadron is a squadron of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force based at Iruma Air Base in Saitama Prefecture north of Tokyo. Under the authority of the Central Air Defense Force, the squadron operates Kawasaki T-4 and U-4 aircraft.

Western Air Command Support Squadron (JASDF) Military unit

The Western Air Command Support Squadron is a squadron of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force commanded from Kasuga Air Base in Fukuoka Prefecture. The actual aircraft are located at nearby Fukuoka Airport. Under the authority of the Western Air Defense Force, the squadron operates Kawasaki T-4 aircraft.

Kasuga Air Base

Kasuga Air Base is a base of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in Kasuga, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The base serves as the headquarter of Western Air Defense Force (WADF), with its Area of Responsibility encompassing Kyushu, Shikoku and the Chūgoku region on the western part of the country. A hotline connecting Kasuga Air Base and Daegu (Taegu) Air Base in South Korea is also established, through which communications between the two countries are carried out several dozen times a day.
